Thank you Paul for 50 years of fabulous music, I have followed you since I was 17 and now 71 got all your albums. John, Wales UK
He is a very giving man. Thanks for sharing Paul.
We've just witnessed how 'Questions for the angels' (from 'So beautiful or so what') was conceived!
I am so thankful he was part of my generation....
This is the best video about songwriting ever.
Beautiful soul.
YEEEEESSSSS!!!!!! He's still writing!!!! That must mean another album in the works!!!!!! Another N. American tour? PLEASE!!!!
He really works at his art ,even after all these years.
I love how this went from an interview to a monologue.
His songs always tell a story that paints a picture in the mind
What an amazing and fascinating insight into Paul's composing process. For a lifelong fan and (not quite so accomplished) fellow writer + musician, this is really valuable! Paul is so good at explaining how he makes music, when given the time and space to communicate in his own way like this.
It reminds me how brilliant he was on his Graceland episode of the Classic Albums documentary series, breaking down the writing, recording and production elements to provide a far better insight into that album - especially in comparison with other musicians who presented their own episodes.
His passion shines through so effectively, when he reveals so much amazing and entertaining information in this kind of format. I really wish he'd make more documentaries about his work, especially now he's retired from touring - as he offers fans of all types such great insight, compared with most other documentaries produced by similarly popular musicians.
Not only is he a magical musician, he is a compelling communicator able to effectively offer fans a new and unique perspective into his creative process!
I concur
a genius
he's aged so well. this is an amazing interview, seeing the master at work : )
What a great insight into the art of songwriting.....over fifty years Simon has evolved into a serious musician....he was always good but this is good stuff!
From 4:20 to 8:10 here, you get "Love And Hard Times", before that you hear a snippet of a sketch he's working on from 1:10 to 2:30- that became "Questions For The Angels". Both of these songs are featured on his upcoming album "So Beautiful Or So What" due out in April 2011. A different version of "Questions For The Angels" was available as bonus download for a Starbucks label best of CD. While the CD is still available, the download of that song, sadly, is not.
Man. Such a cool guy. So much talent
Oh Paul. Just beautiful.
As much as I disliked that lady at the beginning, she managed to execute one of the best interviews I've ever seen.
Hes still got it!
I agree this is great! 5 stars!
Paul Simon is such a complex person. I didn't understand this before the interview. I guess I had always considered his gift to be a special talent, but it is so much more.....
this is just wonderfull.....
Beautiful!
Seriously, could you imagine The Spice Girls, Take That or One Direction having anywhere near the brains and talent of Paul Simon?!
Cheap shot
Gary Barlow has had a stellar career as a singer songwriter
Paul is my teacher, my religion, since 30 years.
PLEASE!! ANOTHER TOUR!
thank you
I second the motion!
@863310 you described this so well- "an honest de-mystifying blueprint" for songwriting!
Nice piece, that is.
Certainly made me well up. Thought of my wife. Thank God I found her in time.
sounds some what like "love and hard times."
Called it!... man this song makes me tear up.
He has some serious claws.
Hope he makes another album
Great
He seems more at ease with a guitar in hand....
Yep. OM 42
The guitar looks like a Martin OM 42 or OM 45.
todd11561 it's a 42 ... forward bracing .
@VLArray It's a Martin, not sure what model, perhaps a custom.
@wilsondylanmccartney I agree. He is THE GREATEST.
Between 7:00 and 7:10, he sounds like Jeff Buckley. (or JB sounds like him) Beautiful song though.
does anyone know the model and make of guitar he is playing here? thanks :)
Martín OM P.Simon special edition
Sounds a bit like Overs
sorry...2nd to mccartney...with billy joel at 3rd maybe xx
No! Paul Simon 1, Billy Joel 2nd. They have talent, McCartney had media attention.
Hey is my favorite Jew performer because he wrote the song "I am Iraq" which is about my homeland Iraq. Allahu Akbar.
How terribly strange.
Come, hes lost it, to much fame and money, maybe its drugs and money, i use to love his music, but thats life.
