I was fortunate enough to become friends with Cecil Schumacher in the 1970's in the UK just as 1/12th scale rc electric car racing was starting to boom.. At an early National 1/12 race meeting held at the Model Engineering show, Cecil showed me his prototype ball differential he was running on young Robin's car. Running on Siliconed Tyres on the wood floor, the handling appeared transformed. I immediately ordered 2 production units for my Spectrons, and they transformed the car's performance and resulted in many National Championship race wins in those early 1/12th racing seasons..Cecil was a great friend and engineer!
I used to race with Cecil at the Barwell club near Leicester . One night he showed me his prototype diff . The amazing thing is a mate of mine showed me a sketch about a month before of a ball diff he had designed but never tried to build . Great minds think alike !

Yes please! I loved this trip down memory lane. I had the 2nd car mentioned, the C 1/12 car. Then the cat xl ( my favorite car ever!) Procat, topcat, cougar and several other versions of it. Now i have a cougar, procat and cougar 2000 to restore someday! Im so glad i got to race in the best era of car development, great times
Yes part 2, let's not forget the mission Mi1 a TC race car for £100 late 90's same price as a Tamiya Hornet. Great video I think the Rc10 and the topcat were track enemies but was it named after the coolest cartoon character ever that was done on purpose. My favourite car from racing TA TC3 and I'm from UK.
Interesting vid, thanks! Yeah it'd be good to see another Schumacher vid part 2... I've still got my original 1990 ProCat which I've restored last year, though it now has the modern transmission as it's using a modern sensored combo - and it's still amazing on track, looks great. It always bring a smile to my face when driving it for some casual laps on the track on a summers evening.
A friend of mine is a retired engineer who designed moulds for plastic parts for the likes of Jaguar, Bentley and Rolls Royce. Chatting with him one day, he casually mentioned that he designed all of the moulds to make tires for an RC car manufacturer in the early '90s. I asked him for who. He said, "I think they were called Schumacher." He designed the moulds for all of their 1/10th scale buggy tires, for the CAT.
I have an original procat with full mms drive train and team tanaplan front upper wishbones . I bought the re release for the procat as well that I have put in the pro drive train both where a joy to build.
Cleary My favourite rc brand…… as you can tell from my UA-cam channel and yes Jamie Booth finished 6th in 89 Worlds with a Topcat….. I have the trophy 😊

Schumachers cars were brittle the diffs stunk and the laydown shocks were a joke. I know all this because at 1 time i was a team driver for the offroad cars. People used to put in Associated transmissions to make the car more relaible and they like the associated slipper clutches. MIP made a slipper drive for the Schumacher which alot of people used as well. So dont brag to much about Schumacher at least as far as offroad cars went. Onroad i know nothing about. But i can speak from experiance the offroad cars.
The history and race wins speak for themselves! Maybe it was the way you built them🤷♂️ I’ve owned and raced a few Schumacher cats and I found them brilliant and very reliable!

I like Schumacher cause the parts are reasonably priced but yet they make stuff so you don’t need upgrades or common replacement, not like associated
