absolutely love your tutorial Leah! Followed your instructions and I have just created a beautiful rainbow pen for my 7 yr old granddaughter ! many thanks.. new (72) year old subscriber here. .please make more polymer clay stuff!!!
Absolutely Gorgeous! I 💜 this technique because I'm colour blind. All too often, shades and accents are lost on me. Mokume Game is a great way for me to express my creative "handicap", & also lend a glimpse to others how I see the world every day. I Love to cover Altoid tins & use gold/silver leaf to make custom "Goodie Keepers" for ladies' hanbags, etc. I've also created purse charms, pairing Mokume w/ Wire Wrapping. Make a base shape (sphere, heart, etc.) out of crumpled aluminum foil and cover w/ Mokume. Then, use your favourite wire wrap technique, and... Viola! Thanks so much for sharing this delightful tutorial. I now know what to stuff in my nieces' stockings! Hope your Holidays are as beautiful as your creations! 🎄🎁
Leah is is a fabulous mokume with genius laying on the pen.. perfect 👏👏 I use mokume slices for any project I fancy.. jewellery, boxes and bottles. I will be doing pens like this in future🙏🏽
I've seen tool handles covered in MG... you could also make veneers for covering glassware, or making boxes.... imagine using the translucent colors on a glass candle holder! You did a fabulous job, first time or not! But here's something to consider... the lumps and bumps may not be that comfortable for the writer. Cheers! Rachel D
So...am I the only one wondering how well that plastic pen held up to being baked at 275 F for 15 minutes? ;) AWESOME tutorial, btw! I must make one (if the pen doesn't melt)!! 🌈😍❤️
That looks fantastic!!!! You can make lovely bowls, cover books or anything you like. You've done such a beautiful job I can't believe it's your first try. You must be a very accomplished artist already. We did a class on it and I was impressed with our clumsy results but your's is awesome!!!
Thank you for thumbing your nose at the fashionistas and their muted colors for this year! I'm so ready for the brighter colors that I'm going to try this and see how far I can take it. Nice tutorials (I've watched several now).
Martha D hahaha too funny. I don't follow fashion. As a work-from-home entrepreneur I am very proud that I can work in MY PJs. How's that for fashion? ;) But I agree, colors are beautiful, why would you NOT want color in your life? I'd love to see what you make. Be sure to tag me #magicbyleah on instagram
Great job!!! For your first time you did amazing. Your pen is beautiful. I do MG alot and use it for everything almost. LOL. One thing I do is flip it over and do my designing on the back also. Somewhat less than the front, but it gives me a little different design and less wasted clay when I can cut from both sides. Just a touch tricky but it works. I am sure someone else has told you that already. But thought I would add. Thank you for sharing.
That is so gorgeous! I am planning on making some buttons because I make tie-dye clothes and want something really original on them :D Thanks for sharing! Kate x
I plan on covering vases. I've covered a ceramic one and a glass one before using cane slices but plan on using this next. I actually discovered mukame by accident when making a cane that went wrong - didn't know that it was an actual thing! I used it then to make pendants. But now I've learnt the proper technique I can get better results.
Greta Hunt you hit the nail on the head. The best techniques are discovered by accident. Glad I was able to inspire you to continue with it. Be careful it's VERY addictive! :) I'd love to see your vases
I covered the handle of a metal comb I use for combing my dogs fur. I found the thin handle difficult to hold so I built it up with scraps and then covered it with a MG pattern.
Love the color scheme. I was thinking of covering the bottom of a clear plate (that would look strilking, a wine bottle, maybe a stain glass window (for decor) and use the liquid lead to make it look like stained glass, cover a vase, etc. Anything you can put in the oven to bake the polymer clay is worth a try.
I covered a large tin box with faux leather, and inserted mokume game panels on the sides and top. One of my better projects! I added steampunk elements, and it was very successful.
I love your tutorials because you give a lot of thoughts outloud that you are thinking (answers to questions I might be wondering) How long do you bake the pen for when using Premo? Thanks :)
Kharmagain thank you :) I like to bake my pens 30 minutes at the package designated temperature. I use 2 thermometers to monitor the temperature since overcooking is ok but incorrect temperatures will result in problems
Kharmagain This will depend on which type of pen you are using. I recommend that any pen you try, try it in the oven first without clay so that you don't ruin your masterpiece. I also recommend the BIC Stick pens that I use in my video because I've made hundreds of pens with them and they're all ok.Before I discovered this brand I tried many others that bent or otherwise melted. It's all about trial and error
I live in UK and am struggling to find a pen that doesn't melt, giving me a large C when baked. Is there a pen I can buy on line, so it can be bought in any country.
Well it sounded that way until last Saturday. Apparently the clear Bic pens melt horribly as they are not flexible. It split the clay on many sides and it just melted all over the chopstick into a hard, plastic clump. So! It actually expanded and then melted - ruining the outside shaft of clay. The only pens I have no trouble with are the pens that are slightly flexible when you bend them and solid colored. I do use a chopstick in them and never, ever have a problem! Hope this helps :)

I use Mokume Gane to make jewelry pendants, bracelets, and earrings. I love the tutorial and your rainbow idea. Thank you!
I've used it to cover a bare wooden jewelry box and a picture frame. Love the colors! (I used blues, black, and silver leaf on my box and frame.)
Absolutely Gorgeous!

+Janna Campbell Wow thank you so much for sharing, you can't ever go wrong with your color choice in Mokume Gane so that's perfect!
Love the colors, these are my colors from the 70’s. Love it!!!! ❤️
Love the colors! I made drink coasters in red, gold and black colors. Use cork sheet for center and made a free form frame and glued cork to it.
+Nancy Hernandez oooh I'd love to see them. Please tag me on IG

Nicely done. Easy to follow. Beautiful result.

Bic stick pens are a favorite of PC artists because they don't melt at the temperature required for curing the clay. ☺

Too funny +Julie Rochforte I studied the technique in detail and analyzed how various results turned out. I'm an OCD perfectionist, guess it shows ;)
by the way, your videos are so inspirational, and you have a lovely tone and way of tutoring, you are amazing.
Larraine Wilkinson Thank you. Guess I can't turn off the teacher in me. I teach science by day ;)

So nice! Where did you get those cookie cutters? Is that what they're called?
The website link has all the resources
this is so pretty and is exactly what i was looking for :)

After finish, how can I refill this mine pen???
I covered a large tin box with faux leather, and inserted mokume game panels on the sides and top. One of my better projects! I added steampunk elements, and it was very successful.

Kharmagain awesome! I can't wait to see your pens. Be sure to tag #magicbyleah on Instagram (are you on instagram?)

crochet hooks to make them more ergonomic for crocheting
I live in UK and am struggling to find a pen that doesn't melt, giving me a large C when baked. Is there a pen I can buy on line, so it can be bought in any country.
+Larraine Wilkinson Sticking a straight, thick piece of aluminum wire or a chopstick through the pen while baking will help the pen keep its shape :)
just seen this answer, many thanks, brilliant idea.

decorating small box
+Katia Lizet need to give that a try
silverware?
+Nadia Jahanbin Great idea! I worry that the clay will absorb food though...
You just add the clay to the last couple of inches or so at the end of the utensils. There are are beautiful tutes for it on You tube
just a point, there is no purple/violet colour in the rainbow. We have just evolved to interpret some unknown colour as purple
I saved my favorite cooking knives by covering the handles when they broke. Now I have new knives.
awesome! just be careful with clay and food. Baked clay is porous and can harbor bacteria
it kinds looks like thermal imaging
+colourful souls too funny!
