    An excellent and informative video, thank you. Just one small correction, the ship in the dockyard shown in the video is HMS Warrior an early iron armoured warship. Warrior was restored by apprentices in Hartlepool and My Father Arthur Corney curator of Portsmouth City Museums at the time persuaded the City Council and the Navy to give Warrior a Permanent home in Portsmouth. It took 4 days to tow Warrior from Hartlepool to Portsmouth and large crowds greeted her arrival in Portsmouth.

      Hillary good morning, Yes you are absolutely correct I got it wrong and your info about Warrior is fascinating - You must be very proud of your dad. I confess I had my hands full in Portsmouth harbour with the boat, buoyage and trying to film.. Not been there for 20 or 30 years. I was looking for Victory as I remember filming on her in the dockyard for a BBC production of Les Mis and used to be able to see her from the harbour when I did visit - back in the days when Commander Peter Richardson ...was deputy port captain and I had my very first cabin boat a 22ft Galion... Really enjoyed going back and thank you for watching and correcting me!

    Nice video with a certain charm, so without wanting to be too critical, there are a couple of small errors that I feel I should mention (in addition to the reference to Warrior already picked up below) - the little map shown at 4:29 incorrectly shows Gosport marina as Haslar and at 4:55 you say all 3 marinas in Portsmouth Harbour, but there are at least 5 (Haslar, Gosport, Royal Clarence, Port Solent and Gunwharf Quays).

    • @SailingGently

      Martin hello,
      Thank you very much for the corrections. That was my first visit to Portsmouth Harbour by boat in 30 years and so much had changed and it was so busy... You notes will be very useful to other viewers of the video and I promise to try to do better next time :-)

    Being based in Eastbourne we often do this route to the Solent, often with a stopover in Brighton. Gosport Marina has a great bus service right outside the gates and there is also the ferry to Portsmouth which takes one to the train station. Be aware that there are some changes to the rules and buoyage into Portsmouth because of the aircraft carriers.

    It’s always been a lovely marina. Used to go there when it was just open and houses still being built. It has a cohesive feel to it, compared to Brighton which is a weird mix of styles that don’t feel connected. I haven’t been there in a long while so might add to my list. Andy UK

      in-between lots of weather finally made it to Cowes IOW which is 10 miles from Southampton docks... wet cold and bumpy but now ready for lift off!

  • @WidleyWesident

    Indeed, HMS Victory is now hiding in the dockyard with stumps for masts. HMS Warrior is looking good in her fresh paint. I’m sure no one would really mistake the two. Oh, I sit corrected… 😂😂😂

    • @SailingGently
      @SailingGently  2 роки тому +1

      I messed up... sorry! I have visited and filmed in HMS Victory and knew roughly where she was located but through the zoom lens the only masts I could see were Warrior which frankly I had never heard of!!!

    Hi. With your boat, is it possible to cross Atlantic Ocean or it has to be only A class, like Bavaria 32 A class. Thank u. Love your video, this very important.

    • @SailingGently
      @SailingGently  2 роки тому +1

      Actually Bur she would do well in the Atlantic. I hesitate to say it but it's the person not the boat... It's true in a blow my Beneteau 323 is not as comfortable as say a Moody 36 or a Westerly Ocean 43, both of which I have previously owned, out in a the Atlantic but she is perfectly sea worthy!

    do you have to go ashore and check in with authorities for merely passing through territorial waters or only if you intend to anchor or dock? thx

    • @SailingGently
      @SailingGently  2 роки тому

      Depends on the country... Some like Algeria will arrest you if you enter their territorial waters without a visa! Most EU countries are more laid back ..

    How is it possible to get a sail boat when they are so expensive

    • @TheAncientMarinersBlog
      @TheAncientMarinersBlog 2 роки тому +1

      you would be surprised how cheaply you can acquire AND run a small boat; sure, you can spend any amount of money you like (just look at the Southampton Boat Show) but you can buy an entirely serviceable 25ft boat for £6k, and even live aboard it for £4k a year if you are careful.

    • @SailingGently

      I would agree with everything thesalvationairforce wrote... A 25 footer on a mooring on the south coast is probably possible for most folks... My first cabin boat having learned to sail a dinghy was a 22 footer with an outboard and a bucket for a loo... And I went to Cherbourg and the channel islands in her.... for very little money... Need a good anchor to avoid marinas

    • @chrisyarnold6205
      @chrisyarnold6205 2 роки тому

      Some people sell up their entire land life, and opt for a liveaboard, swap their car for a dingy and a folding bicycle, it can be done.

    • @TheAncientMarinersBlog
      @TheAncientMarinersBlog 2 роки тому

      I too was at the Southampton boat show last week, and according to a pamphlet I picked up the cost of mooring a 25ft boat in Cherbourg Chantereyne Marina from October to May is €837, including electricity, water and full marina facilities. In the UK, your domestic electricity bill alone is likely to exceed that.
      Sailing can be as breathtakingly expensive as you care to make it, or refreshingly affordable if you put your mind to it. I believe that Cherbourg holds a particular place in Michael's heart, but I am willing to bet that if you went to one of the secondary French ports such as Dives or Ouistreham, you could get away with paying even less. €50 a week in the local Aldi for food & drink and you could spend the Autumn, Winter and Spring afloat in Normandy for less than it costs to fill up your car in the UK
