Close your eyes and listen to Jason Batemen tell you how to play a weird instrument
💀
Same
How did I even get here?? Love it though.
aaaaaaaaaaand now I can't unhear that.
Jason Bateman cares not for the suffering of those who hear his utterances.
I went through a deep, deep, DEEP youtube hole to get here. You know what video I started on? The don't stop me now music video. Over the past 7 hours, I started at don't stop me now, and went deeper and deeper until I came to, realizing that I was watching a video about playing the jaw harp. The worst part is that I was pretty much in a trance-like state. I was watching, and clicking new videos, and liking, but basically sleepwalking. I basically woke up watching this video, except I wasn't asleep. I've had enough internet for today.
I just searched for jaw harp
I just searched up old west instruments
in you trace state did you think I can be the Hendrix of jaw harps
Sounds like when you’re on the phone while driving. I always feel I come to after I hang up.
Are you ok
Red Dead Redemption 2 brought me here after seeing Sean playing this lol.
Radhee Dewan same
Fallout 76 brought me here lol
@X X V I worth it mate, altho you might as well quit work and any relationships you have as you will be hooked haha
@@papabren saw it on red dead, didnt know what it was called, then found one in a shack on fallout 76. bought one and here I am lol
@@Southernmost682 fallout bringing people together with a jaw harp haha awesome
I'm starting to feel like a jaw harp isn't the easiest instrument to play with braces.
Lamb OfGod You might try a dan moi for your time in braces. Ultra gnarly sound, and easily played against the lips. Also what harp are you playing? Love the name. I have seen L.o.g. Twice in concert and they killed it both times.
Same here fam
It’s not easy with a massive beard either lol
got my jaw harp when i had braces
you can play genggong, karinding, dan moi, mouth bou, kou xiang... Basically any kind that you can play against your lips or even without touching
5000 years ago people already made eletro mixes and robot voice
The new sounds are quite old.
Combine it with a didgeridoo to get those bass drops
Dollar tree acid bass!
Reasons this is better than other instructional videos: no bullshit at the beginning. Just gets right into what we're here for.
My grandfather passed recently and I found a jaw harp amongst his old stuff, and decided to try and play it, thanks so much for helping, it means a lot!
I find this instrument so simple yet so fascinating.
Totally is.
Hearing a master pull off 'Bohemian Rhapsody' is a treat you won't soon forget.
now play some Mastodon on that thing
+Dillon Procell Mastadon is a journey, a separate awesome journey.
It’s incredible that this device can be incorporated into metal music, but if you haven’t checked them out already, take a look at The HU. Such amazing sound from an instrument when used in tandem with other traditional instruments.
I didn’t even know it was used in metal I just know it’s used in a lot of old (old as in actually old) country songs lol
I was drawn to this video out of curiosity after listening to Sleeping Village from Black Sabbath first album
Also a Techno Analogue Wonder
my mom handed me one of these yesterday and out of curiosity i looked up videos on it. my mind is blown.
Your mom rules. You should never let her forget how great she is.
I busted my lip and now I’m getting really cool distortion..
Enjoy the reverb
Play some metallica then
Bleeding fingers and broken front teeth?
I’m getting one for my son for Christmas. He’s been asking for one for a while now. It’s sure going to be fun the next few weeks while he learns how to play it, lol.
Heck yes, that is awesome. Just avoid the snoopy harp.
@@bebbcorpharpery7331 Why is the snoopy harp different?!?! Because I've been trying to play it to these videos and no noise just painful teeth
Because it makes little to no sound. It can also be dangerous and not safe for teeth. Real jaw harps make awesome sound and are relatively safe. Snoop is not.
Bebbcorp Harpery Good to know, thank you! He opened his harp this morning and loves it. Merry Christmas!
@@bebbcorpharpery7331, I must have a Snoop. The only noise was the clicking against my teeth. That ended my 40-second experience with this instrument.
It's amazing how quickly you can begin to make sounds with a decent harp. I just received my paval potkin I ordered from Bebbcorp Harpery and surprised myself when I began to make sounds with it by the time this tutorial video ended.
Enjoy the journey.
when she tell you to play it like a jaw harp
Make at Thang sound like a tuba
PLS YOU GUYS ARE HORRIBLE 💀💀💀
I had so much fun playing my first jaw harp that I wore it out within a month. Still play occasionally.
I love how much passion is in all of your videos and how enthusiastic and supportive you are towards beginners! My harp will be in the mail tomorrow, I'm so excited to begin and your videos have taught me a lot already. :)
Glad to help.
Thanks again Jamie! I've been playing my new harp for hours! Your lessons are awesome!
Thanks for sending me the link 😊 just great, now I know where I was going wrong about 50 years ago 😅 😕 😳, you wouldn't think that I've gone all these years not knowing.
Maybe one day soon I might just go and buy another and, maybe it might be better quality than was available back then.
Just turned 71 on 16th February so maybe there's still time.
Thanks again and happy harping.
Keep well, stay safe.
Cheers 🍻 mate Les.
I just purchased two jaw harps. Hadn’t messed with one since I was a child. Thank you so much on the refresher course.
I'm genuinely fascinated by this, thank you for introducing me to this wonderful talent!
Thanks for the video! Just got myself a jaw harp and had no idea what I was doing. Still got a way to go but this has definitely put me in the right direction!
This is such a great video. I'm still having trouble but I'm gonna stick with it.
I just bought this little harp at the General Store in Greune, Tx. Thanks to your video I'll be able to play in no time. Thanks again
That note you played @ 3:52 sounds like a boing sound effect.
Robby Osborne yep
Warner Bros cartoons (Looney Toons, etc) and Disney use the jaw harp for boing effects… examples include Tigger the Tiger’s bouncy tail and Tom & Jerry cartoons when one of them gets violent whacked and they space out.
@@PlayitonPan That's right.
I just bought one today (a cheap one) but thanks to you I am getting the hang of it already. Thank you man! Can't wait to see more of you're videos in the near future
Aaron Cunnane That is awesome. The harping world is lucky to have you. Enjoy all that the harp has to offer.
I found this video from pure curiosity. Synchronicity is an amazing thing.. Mastodon are one of my favorite bands. Thank you brother.
Thanks so much. Just bought one and really didn't know even the basics. You've gotten me off to a good start.
Awesome video. Just got my first jaw harp today. I think it sounds good so far thanks to your tutorial. Thank you!
Bro thank you so much I won a jaw harp at a little cowboy game and I didn’t know how to use it so I searched it up on UA-cam but it didn’t help but your ,cause you explained it so clearly thank you so much have a awesome day.
I remember my grandmother had one of these in the junk drawer. I just figured out now that it must have been my uncle's. Never knew how to use it. Good to see.
I love the sound that instrument makes because I can infuse it and so many musical segments.
Fallout 76 made me buy the Jaw harp
Never could play one without hurting my teeth. Loved watching my grandfather play this and his harmonica
You may want to try a dan moi. They are played against the lips and are awesome.
My husband just found a really old one in his mom's neighbors garage, so i came here to learn how to use it...after years of hearing him talk about these things! Really cool, Thanks!
I just purchased a dan moi and the samurai jaw harp and learned how to play within minutes of opening the package! What a blast and an amazingly interesting instrument this is. Everyone needs to at least try these out, it will bring so much joy and fun into your life and others.
Glad you are enjoying and catching on quick. Good luck on your journey.
How can something so simple and small be so excellent??!! I always loved the mysterious vibrant sound of the jaw harp so I bought it for my black metal band. And the drummer sent me this video saying "This dude taught me how to play the jaw harp!" Now all I want to say to Bebbcorp Harpery is: thank you for your well presented instructions
So glad to hear this. Comment below your metal band, and I will check it out.
I’ve heard more jaw harps used in black metal than in any other genre I listen to
@@bebbcorpharpery7331 Ok I will
@@mariejudesmart649so whats the name
It's like a guitar talkbox! That's pretty neat. Badass shirt btw 🤟
Thanks.
I was kind'a hoping he'd do a bit of Peter Framption's "Do You Feel Like We Do?" =)
Thank you for this video. I recently became interested in playing and your video was very helpful. I had a lot of clicks the first day or two, but have gotten much better with practice.
WOW! Thank you for improving my old lackluster sounding Jaw harp in a matter of seconds!
i broke my tooth trying to learn how to play this and also just busted my lip 5 minutes later
That Person can you explain how?
Hyper Stormy the metal piece that you flick hit the edge of my tooth and chipped it and it ended up hitting the inner part of my lip a few times busting it open
Were you playing a snoopy harp? Snoopy harps are dangerous toys and should not be used in the mouth.
Bebbcorp Harpery I HAVE ONE AND I ALMOST PLAYED IT UNTIL YOU SAID THIS THANK U
@@bebbcorpharpery7331 well this explains why after 20 minutes i have gotten no decent sound and jaw pain!
Rayman origins brought me here. Check out Jibberish Jungle if you want to hear some dope jaw harp playing!
Ah... A man of culture
Rayman Origins also brought me here and it also got me into playing the didgeridoo
Musical instruments are just plain fun and a testament to human creativity and playfulness. Gonna get me one!
I only bought one because it was an old school sound effect for springs in animations. This thing has kicked my backside for a few days now. Thank you.
Thank you for this
He looks like that skinny kid from kimpossible lol
Ron may not have a soul, but he has a name.
I also have a name. Can’t spell it, but the learned others have assured me that I have one.
Thank you for explaining this technique so well! I’ve wondered this for a long time.
I just ordered a jaw harp last night, which Amazon delivered this morning. Practiced for barely an hour and I'm already getting the hang of it!
Who needs a vocoder, perfect the EO - IO technique and you're set !
After half a year of owning one i Can finaly make Basic noises. thanks :))))))))
joarlol No problem.
Oh so it takes awhile to find the sweet spot? Cause I feel like mine isn’t working haha. What was the thing that “clicked” in your mind that allowed you to get it?
I've always wanted a Jaw Harp, and I got one for Christmas 👍👍👍
So I'm going to follow you step by step and get this nailed.
As I've never played any sort of instrument before in my life, but the Jaw Harp has really got my attention 👍👍👍👍👍👍
Wearing a Mastadon shirt and playing a gentle instrument like this is the best thing I've seen all day. 🤘 I'm subscribing just for that but also cuz you seem to be a good teacher. Buying my jaw harp today and am looking forward to learning. Thanks brother!
You rule.
I'm here from red dead online, I saw cripps playing it
Same
Same lmao, trying to relearn harmonica again now as well
The mouth harp is frequently used by Siberian and Mongolian Shamans....
Thanx for the no messing around intro to jaws harp 👍🇬🇧
I’m getting a jaw harp tomorrow and I plan to use this tutorial
I've been getting good at it. :)
+Ashley Finch Fantastic. You should post a video showcasing your skill on our page. The North American Jaw Harpists on fb. Keep on harping Ashley!
Instruments like the Jaw Harp and the Cuica were so prevalent in the music for cartoons and games when I was a kid, but I never knew what they were called or how they worked. I legitimately thought that the cuica was a vocal sample, up until I heard someone say "That monkey yell sound you always hear in tropical music for games, that's a drum"
It's really fascinating to learn about all this stuff, I'd love to learn how to play both of em
Wow super inspirational. You totally open my eyes. Game changer!
Your channel is a blessing. Thank you.
You are a blessing. Thank you for watching. 🙂🙏❤️
Mastodon!! I’m not a big metal fan, but my band played a show next door to those guys in Pontiac, Michigan. The guitar player was a really humble, cool guy and a real character. And I must say, they sounded absolutely incredible. Warning: please wear hearing protection at any metal concert.
We need an electric jaw harp
That was a great tutorial man, easy to follow and clear...THANKS! Love, peace and respect bro
The best part about this video is you have a mastodon shirt it also reminded me of using a jaw harp for a song in a buddies hardcore band
Seeing how you like mastodon, check out remembrance by Gojira they use a jaw harp at thefinal breakdown around 3 mins in
Nice, I haven’t listened to them in a minute and had no idea they had a harp in a song.
they have another song on their newest album with the jaw harp: Amazonia off of the album Fortitude
Thanks!
Got one just for tahiti
MyUnoriginalUsername Does this trolley go to Tahiti?!
A friend of a friend just got one & expressed a desire to learn successfully. I passed them your link.
Hi, received my first jaw harp, the glazyrin lighthouse this evening! Thanks for all your great videos and tutorials, they’re helping me learn some cool techniques! Having a blast harpin’ out in the dark!
Fantastic. It is an exciting journey, enjoy every moment. Harp out.
Hey bro, do u smoke bit of herb when playing ever? I love, I can really lose myself in playing
While I cannot comment on that at the moment, I would add that there are many ways to help to immerse yourself in the experience. The one you stated is perfectly reasonable. If I was to add any advice I would say use your method, but also be kind and empathetic to all life surrounding you. Walk and play amongst the trees. Go to your garden and touch and talk to the plants. Rescue and relocate insects. All of these things before your harp meditation will help to deepen the experience. Play with your eyes closed. Surrender to the harp and abandon all ego. These are a few things that will, “immerse,” you in the experience, or sometimes called, “altering your state.” I am also fond of getting up and dancing while playing the harp for meditation, (not while on camera, lol). Anyways continue to do practices to immerse yourself. You never know how far down the rabbit hole goes. If you happen upon a hole in your travels follow it down a bit. Last piece of advice, if you are down to get weird, check out the book, “The Way of the Shaman,” by Micheal Harner, a famous anthropologist. Many of the things in this book and the exercises translate directly over to the jaw harp. I am about halfway through it and am loving the book and exercises. Enjoy. 😉
Bebbcorp Harpery yeah bro, I’m 34, have picked up the instrument fairly easily as I’ve played sax, clarinet n digerdoo, I find it most harmonious after a few beers n a pipe, With ur matesaround a fireplace, ive subbed to u bro, appreciate ur videos that r very matter of fact n common sense,

+TOTEMAS Thank you.
i just bought 1 cause they sound cool and this video realy helped me practice how to play thank you for this tutorial
Thank you so much. This was very helpful, immediately after your video, I accomplished it.😀🙏

I was curious about the sound this instrument makes. Once you started playing, I envisioned all the old western/cartoon sound effects from my childhood. Thank you for the lesson, and for wearing that shirt!
Yes. The cartoons are using jaw harps. Warner Bros (Looney Toons, etc) and Disney use the jaw harp for boing effects… examples include Tigger the Tiger’s bouncy tail and Tom & Jerry cartoons when one of them gets violently whacked and they space out.
@@PlayitonPan Omg. Lol. I never knew that! FunFact!
Incredibley informative and helped loads as a first introduction. Thank you sir!
Looks sooo easy but I'm sure my jaw harp is broken...
Your jaw is fatigued. Relax and give it a rest. Much like your fingers being sore from first day of guitar.
I bought a cheap snoopy harp once, and the tanger was out of line straight from the box... I managed to get it to sound without clanging by applying steady sideways pressure on the twanger for a minute. Of course this was a crimped style connection I wouldn't recommend that on any real harp.
AO EO IO? Try "Kill all humans" or "By your command imperious leader" lol
So Simple, Personal and GROOOVY
Thanks for the tutorial! It's definitely appreciated.
The HU brought me here & now I want to buy a jaw harp!
Here is a cool website that sells them. www.theharpery.com
My son is autistic and he LOVES music, I'm getting him one for Christmas, think he could learn it with out getting mad?.... I could probably learn and teach him?
I can't carry a tune in a bucket any tips?🌹
Any news on this? I think a keyboard would be enjoyable for him, too
My son is seriously autistic, loves trance, minimal techno, etc. Something connects at a deep level of the spirit. I’m going to try playing this for him.
This instrument has a long history of being used to alter consciousness. It is good to hear that it helps your son to venture into the deep. Happy travels.
im autistic, i always struggled learning new things because i would get frustrated and overwhelmed. i had trouble knowing when it was okay to take a break!! breaks are underestimated in their power. a sensory break for me, (silencing headphones, dim lighting) was key when learning a noisy instrument that was so loud and near my ears. it would have been nice to have a nice mum like you help me know when to take a break, so maybe thats how you can help him? :)
i know im a year late, i hope it went well!!!
Just entered in this beautiful instrument. Thanks to your beautiful channel, love it😉
Fantastic video. Clear and informative instructions
damn! so thats where some of those robot sound/voices come from!
A vocoder is the device used to make those sounds, but this is a much simpler/cheaper way to do it. ;)
@@runner3033 damn. now i need to go google more stuff and waste more time on the net.

It actually made me search about that instrument and I couldn’t belive it, that instrument has actually a really old history. So it’s actually maded by original Turks when they were in Central Asia (Modern Turks live in Anatolia as we know Turkey) Wow! Just amazing, definitely gonna start it!!
Helpful and pleasant video, thanks!
Imgur brought me here and I am now seriously considering buying one of these. Even if I never master it, this is a soothing and really pleasing sound, such a unique instrument!

Nice collection, I just ordered a new Jaw harps and two vintage ones, hopefully I can learn to make some music and not just noise. My wife may not be too happy with my new hobby, probably gonna drive her crazy.
Eh...perhaps I can get and play one later..right now I'm still in the first 1 to 2 months of healing up from dental implant surgery so any kind of vibration near the teeth like that may not be good for the bones as they regrow around the rods..I'd have to ask the surgeon who put them in if a jaw harp is okay..if they even know what that is lol.

I'm gonna get this instrument someday before too long. My neighbors are gonna love my tribal neofolk harsh noise dark ambient music. Howls of agony and triumph accompanied by the twangy wah wahs of a mouth harp, glass breaking rhythmically alongside the constant drone of a power drill.
