I am surprised that the US hasn’t changed to do the same thing that Canada does. As you know, when Canadians submit our taxes they ask if we want to be included on the voter registration and we just click a button to check the box.
that would be too much like right...too easy. it would empower more of "the people", exactly the opposite of what politicians want, after the Citizens United decision.
Why not when you turn 18, or get citizenship you are automatically registered to vote? I guess there is data when every citizen turns 18, or do US citizens need to tell the government they are 18?
Exactly. That's how Germany does it and it works perfectly. It sends out voting cards to your preferred address and you either take it to the nearest voting station or you return that card for a mail in ballot.
Immigrants pay taxes too. The DMV is one of the few places where citizenship is checked. But not everyone drives or has need for government ID. Not everyone pays taxes. There isn't really a single institution that could be 100% encompassing, but that shouldn't stop us from trying to make it better. Election day should be a national holiday.
I think it's a great idea. I also think they should make rules about how far away polling stations can be from population centers, and how long lines are typically. I live in a red state, rural area. The polling station in the large town next door was outside town at the community center- 2 miles down a highway. Poor people without a car had to find a ride. At my town, I waited exactly 15 seconds in line four years ago. The news showed urban voters waiting 8 hours. This is also voter suppression. (FYI: Large town was Dodge City, KS, but I have been told they fixed this.)
that's an INTENTIONAL GOP tactic, along the lines of making it unlawful to pass out water to those folks in those long lines, as they did in Georgia, I believe. the GOP is doubling, tripling down on voter suppression, so, don't believe everything you're told (like trump, they've become HUGE liars), until you see it with your own eyes
When the pandemic started, California was one of the first to say, “So we need to social distance, but we also need to vote. Okay, we’ll just mail everyone a ballot automatically,” and we’re still doing it. You can go to the polls if you still want to - last time I did, the polling station was in a neighbor’s garage a block away - but why should I when filling out my ballot at home and taking it to a secure dropbox (my family opts for dropping off rather than mailing) is so much more convenient? Plus, no need to find people to staff the polling station. Mail-in ballots for all, I say! (Although the fact that it’s 2024 and we haven’t figured out a secure way to vote online even though we trust the Internet for things like banking boggles my mind.)

Colorado voting system is great in every way! Love the mail in ballots, you can research all the issues and candidates at your convenience, and put the ballot in the election box as late as 7 pm on election day! I would not trust the US mail.
Same here in WA. When I lived in CO we had the choice of mail-in and to be put on the "yes, please mail me a ballot each time" list. Between CO and WA, I lived a couple years in TX and I had to go in person to vote! It had been so long that I had never even used the electronic voting machines! Your voter registration is strange to me. I live in Australia and here it is compulsory, as soon as you turn 18 you have to register and then you have to vote in every election for the rest of your life. If you don't then you get fined. So what are the benefits of compulsory voting, it means that the people running for election have to appeal to everyone. They can't just appeal to a small section of the community. The other benefit is that they have to make it easy for everyone to vote. We would not put up with standing in line for hours to vote. No way. There are many things that other democracies in the world have, and I think the US could learn from them. Unfortunately, the US does not have the best one in the world, if it was so good it wouldn't be under threat the way it is right now.
I'm a US citizen, and I agree. I lived in France until I was 18, and did International humanitarian work for a decade, including some election monitoring. Our system really baffles me, especially how much has been left up to each state, and how vulnerable the system is to attack 😳

Good ideas in this video but we need to go a step further. A Federal law needs to be enacted which guarantees everyone the right to vote and to have the day off from work in order to insure access to the voting booths. All too often states close the voting facilities far too early in the day and people cannot get off from work in order to cast their vote. This must be stopped NOW.
Feeling a HUGE change in Rome, GA now People making it a point to tell me they are not voting for anyone. I’m a known no trump supporter and this ain’t a thing that’s I thought would happen. I thought I would be swinging from a rope it has been that bad….but somethings changing.
It’s a step. And what about the very poor who don’t have a drivers license? Or the elderly that stopped driving? How do we truly get everyone a seat at the voting table?
I'm an American living in Europe (Netherlands). Because everyone here, whether you drive or not, is registered as an inhabitant, they *automatically* determine which elections someone can vote in (foreigners can vote in local elections, but not national ones) and SEND A BALLOT right to their home address. You just show I.D. when you go to vote. So easy!
Why does America keep tying things to driving? Driving is occasionally necessary, but overall antisocial. It certainly shouldn't be a prerequisite for voting-or drinking.
Because America is expansive. Sure there are well known urban centers; LA, Chicago, New York, Detroit, Philly, etc, but the majority of it is rural and a car is mandatory. In much of the USA, neighbors are literal miles apart and the closest towns are 1 hour away by car. Having said that, voting should not be tied to driving, with the exception being that a valid driver's license can be used as a valid ID.
@@paulwindisch1423 I don't think that's quite right as an analysis. Canada is less densely populated, but a lot of people don't own cars. There's this thing in the US about just disliking people generally and wanting to make sure that they don't get public services, and generally not caring about anyone's safety or time.
@@stephenspackman5573 I don't think my analysis is that far off. We have almost 10x the amount of people as Canada, but they are not evenly distributed across the country. Some of the urban centers I mentioned are where the majority of those numbers are. California by itself has a higher population than all of Canada and is 1/8 of the entire US population. All one has to do is get 20-30 minutes away from most cities and the landscape gets very sparse regarding people. For the majority of Canada's non-car owners, where do they reside? Because I am assuming most non-car owners are in places like Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver and parts of Windsor. The idea that we drive cars in the US because we dislike people I think is a little disingenuous. It would be prohibitively expensive to offer public transit to every citizen of the US. In places where it makes sense, it does exist. New York City, Boston, Chicago all have transit systems. We had it here in Detroit until the auto industry took off. That is another conversation. I do wish we had better transit in and out of Detroit. Regardless, I just checked, 91% of Americans have a driver's license. That means 91% of Americans have to make at least one transaction with the DMV (Secretary of State here in Michigan) per year. I'm sure we could easily figure out the other 9%.
@@paulwindisch1423 Perhaps my perspective is distorted by the fact that I live in San Jose, CA. It's a substantial city, population wise, and indeed you could argue that it's not even distinct from San Francisco and Oakland, but it's designed in this utterly hostile way. No matter where you live, you can't walk to a cafe or a grocery store, and the “transit” system is a joke, with light rail lines that follow unhelpful routes at low speeds and low frequencies, with no grade separation. The entire system was shut down for months by a terrorist attack and the system is so useless it barely even made the news. It was very popular for a while to get very angry about the fact that the big employers in the area (Google, Apple and so on) run private bus services to get employees to work. Missing the important fact that these private bus services exist because adequate public transit doesn't. But in terms of size, population, wealth and so on, California is not so different from Germany. In Germany I lived in a small town on the periphery of a moderate city and I had no need of a car, because there was a train to the city several times an hour, high speed connections from there to the rest of the country, there were a full set of services within walking distance, and every outlying village had at least an occasional bus. And then there's one of my very first experiences in the US: being told that I couldn't pick up beer for a friend because I _didn't_ have a driver's license. In most countries they _discourage_ drinking and driving, but here…! It's a strange mindset, I tell you.
Thanks! I just sent a message to Gov. Newsom. As I told him, being a Californian, I love that I automatically receive a mail-in ballot for every election. We should also make registration that easy and automatic, especially in light of the right-wing attacks on voting rights across the nation.

Ok. Then you need to amend the constitution. I live in a state with 100% mail-in voting.
It amazes me how “the best country in the world” can be so backasswards in so many ways.
Your southern neighbor is a Democracy in name more than fact. I have come to realize this all through my 70 years of experience here in the US.
And look at the current Prime Minster! Canada is a Socialist country
@@EricaGamet Some US counties get over 100% voting turnout, when countries like Australia with compulsory voting can only get around 90-95%. lol
As an American living abroad, I have registered as a previous CA resident. It was so easy and fast to do. Governor Newsom's proposed bill is a great thing!
Voting 💙 up and down the ballot! 🇺🇲
Also American living abroad and voting in Arkansas. It has been a hassle to register to vote this time. The Sanders family made everything worse in AR.

It should be a mandatory national holiday too.
PAID holiday. We shouldn't take any wages away from people.
Thank you, Leigh. Vote Blue. 💙💙💙
This is brilliant.
As someone from another country I am amazed at how hard it is for people to vote in the USA 😮
This is so very important!
Keep us advised (and educated) of other bills and petitions we should support. We will become dangerous!😅
I love living in Colorado! Automatic voter registration at DMV, and ballots mailed to every registered voter for every election.
Colorado here.
Best state in the union.
Best election laws
@@ButMadNNW626we do taxes online, voting shouldn't be that much of a stretch beyond that, right?
Just imagine these long lines happened in other countries. What would you think? 8 hours waiting time is unacceptable. And I assume it's on purpose.
@@ButMadNNW626 _"...California was one of the first to say... we’ll just mail everyone a ballot automatically..."_
Oregon has been doing that since 1992 and nearly 100% [except for a couple of districts] since 1982, with Washington State the same but two years lagtime than Oregon in both scenarios. Colorado and Utah has been doing that for a decade [2013/2014 respectively].
All four States rank in the top five in every election for best and most efficient, including cost efficient, election system.
Cheers from Beautiful B.C., Canada from a former 13-year Oregon resident [Canadian citizen] married 33 years to an American-raised American-Canadian woman. Yes! Vote vote vote
You might want to let people know that those who receive a jury summons are tax filers, registered voters & CA drivers license holders. A lot of people erroneously think that if they don't register to vote, they won't get called to serve on a jury.
Thank you for sharing this. My son turned nineteen in June. He JUST registered two days ago. It took forever because of the current registration process. This bill makes it easy and more people would be more inclined to vote if they could avoid the headache of registering!!!!!
Republicans want to make it harder for people to vote. That's what it's all about!
Thank you for all you do. Vote people. 💙💙🥃💙💙
Thank you , Leigh!
I enjoyed your recent appearance on MSNBC!
Remember, if you move update your address on your driver's license. 💙💙💙
And Arkansas is over here saying, "Hold my beer." They're working on getting electronic signatures (like at the DMV) invalidated, making it harder for people to register to vote. I am so done with the GOP. 😡
I love politic girl
Voting in my country is mandatory. There are times if you don't vote, you will fined, or you have to complete a form stating why you didn't vote.
CA resident here Thank you for the info 💙
Excellent idea!
Informed voting is an obligation for a good citizen!
Yes!!! It's legislation like this that makes me proud to be a Californian
This is very progressive, thank you Leigh for sharing it! ☺️
In other Democratic counties around the world, this is very ‘behind’. I was very sad to learn how backwards the American system is.
@@Liliarthan It's more precisely the Republican Party system, not the 'American system'. They are the ones who have intentionally placed all the 'road blocks' over the decades.
so, essentially, any state can do this for a person with an active drivers license ... duh. TOO SIMPLE, GOP will reject.
One citizen, one vote.
I'm from one of the European countries where everybody is automatically registered to vote from the day they turn 18 to their death. The fact that in so many countries eligible citizen have to register to vote sounds so outlandish to me. It's a right, and therefore should be automatic for everyone eligible.
I work the polls on election day in NYS. This bill would be fantastic!
YES!
Republicans will never agree with this.😂
Thanks for sharing this with us ❤
22 countries have compulsory voting…our state’s DMV asked and registered us when we went for our dl’s. We will be voting!!! 💙
But, but, but (followed by a senseless, useless excuse).
Brought to you by people who want to take a country back that doesn't belong to just them.
I live in CA and agree with you. DMV is a pain but it does provide the best place to have accurate and complete voter files. A person still can choose to vote or not to vote. It’s the right thing to do.
As the fifth largest economy in the world, California's democracy is extremely important. Easy access to voting is essential in order to protect that democracy.
I have to say, the CO voter pamphlet is far superior to the one sent out by WA... but maybe we'll get there.
Same with Oregon _[Oregon has been doing 100% mail in ballots since 1992 and nearly 100% [except for a couple of districts] since 1982]_ where we lived for 13 years and still have our home in Portland. We moved back to Canada 11 years ago when we retired [Canadian citizen here, but my wife is an American and Canadian citizen]... Canada where we don't have all this U.S. election b.s..
Voting should be mandatory.
I agree. And election day should be a national holiday
ALL VOTERS MUST BE HEARD AND COUNTED ‼️‼️📢📢📢
It's more precisely the Republican Party system, not the 'American system'. They are the ones who have intentionally placed all the 'road blocks' over the decades.
Letter sent. Thank you for alerting us to this important bill.

I think also that voting should be made mandatory, like it is in Australia.
Then we’d actually need the day off & places to close 😂

It's not a question. We should make it easy for any American citizen to vote. There shouldn't be hoops. I don't understand why people aren't registered automatically when they turn 18. It's up to them if they want to.

Excellent!
Feeling a HUGE change in Rome, GA now
People making it a point to tell me they are not voting for anyone. I’m a known no trump supporter and this ain’t a thing that’s I thought would happen. I thought I would be swinging from a rope it has been that bad….but somethings changing.
Go Gavin!! You can do it!!!!!!!!
It’s a step. And what about the very poor who don’t have a drivers license? Or the elderly that stopped driving? How do we truly get everyone a seat at the voting table?
What about the millions of people in this state who don't drive or have anything to do with the DMV. Pretty elitist solution.
So easy!
Democracy... a really scary thought for republikkkans. Vote blue.
Bravo!
Thanks 💜
I pray this passes.
Great stuff, keep up the good work.
That's a great idea 💡 👍🏾. Hope this works in California and hopefully beyond. Thanks, Leigh 💙.
Thanks! I just sent a message to Gov. Newsom. As I told him, being a Californian, I love that I automatically receive a mail-in ballot for every election. We should also make registration that easy and automatic, especially in light of the right-wing attacks on voting rights across the nation.

Not everyone exercises their right to vote, not everyone can vote , but all have a right to representation. So you want disenfranchise people because……
Ok. Then you need to amend the constitution.
Section 2 of the Fourteenth Amendment amended Article I, Section 2 to include that the "respective Numbers" of the "several States" will be determined by "counting the whole number of persons in each State, excluding Indians not taxed."
Your idea would also exclude lots of citizens who weren't registered to vote, like children.
