We're living the year of the final judgement. In commemoration I decided to work with this piece.
This is probably the best scene from the great movie 1997 'The End of Evangelion'. I really like the style and animation, it has aged really really well. Here we see Asuka awakening from a coma, right into the fray, and Shinji and Misato trying to survive and get to the Evangelion Shogoki.
I'm using an advanced frame interpolation setting, more GPU heavy, resulting in greater quality and less artifacts. As always, make sure to watch it at least on 720p quality as it is rendered with SVP frame interpolation to achieve 60fps. Due to this, there are some minor graphical glitches present.
This is my educational attempt in order to make the format more popular, which in my opinion works great in a lot of media, being one of the main ones anime.

Asuka is such a tragic character. Spends her whole life desperately seeking love and approval and never getting any, discovers that actually someone maybe does care about her, goes into a state of pure euphoria at the thought of it only to die a brutal and agonizing death just 5 minutes later. Poor girl just needed a hug.
Well, this is not her end. In the final scene we can see that she decides to go on living and put into practice what she learned in the instrumentalization and in this battle.
So I think that her end is not so tragic.

Do you all realize that Asuka lost her eye, felt the pain of being disemboweled, got pierced by eight Longinus spears replicas that did REAL damage, and died instantly? Even if she survived the injuries caused by the spears, her Eva got devoured entirely, which means her entry plug would have been eaten as well, along with her. Damn!!
She survived, in a time. You can see her at the end of the movie, alive, for a time, and she grows up with an eye patch and a robotic arm in another timeline.

Not even joking, the scene of Asuka screaming while her eye is bleeding out onto her lap has stuck with me. And her arm getting absolutely destroyed too
Just in case anyone is wondering. Having a high enough sync ratio results in any damage Asuka sustains during battle being reflected on her person. So she's not just "feeling" pain, she's actually experiencing bodily harm.
When the Lance impales itself onto Unit 02's head, Asuka's sync ratio was high enough to where she begins bleeding profusely from her left eye. Afterwards, her sync ratio probably goes down significantly, which is why when Unit 02 is being consumed, her intestines aren't decorating the cockpit. I mean, who's to say? Maybe she's being kept together by her plug suit - like a sausage. Regardless, in her final desperate attempt, her sync ratio goes up to such a degree that Unit 02 begins moving even with its batteries drained. This has the consequence of any damage received being reflected 1:1 with the pilot. That's why her arm splits in two.
This shit isn't symbolic. Asuka dies hard.
Before anyone mentions it. Yes. Toji loses a leg (and alternatively dies in the manga), but that was a direct result of Unit 03's entry plug being crushed by Unit 01.

You're better off not watching it. I didn't watch it for so long but finally decided to give it a go after hearing so much 'hype' about it year after year... Only to be left severely underwhelmed. Don't get me wrong, it was an alright show but it didn't come close to being the amazing show I thought it was going to be... Although, I did rather enjoy the movie.

When Shinji screamed at the end of the video, many people assumed that he was gonna go out and avenge Asuka by killing the Evas. But that couldn't be further from the truth. Shinji screamed out if true fear and terror as he realized he lost his friend, Asuka.
That did happen in the manga, but in this version before he could do anything Unit 01 was immobilised by Units 05-13’s spears
The moments Asuka calls her mom 'Mama', I always want to tear up... Even though this moment was spoiled for me way, way back; now that I know the full context of the story, I always want to tear up during those moments.
She says it in such a sweet, happy way at first... That's filled with innocence. I just can't...

I wish more people would acknowledge Misato here. Her death is also tragic and while it was fast she deserved so much better. She is such a strong character. She knew she would die when she put Shinji in the elevator and just had to believe in her team

Nah not really, the arm is just ragdolled because her Eva is shut down due to lack of battery, you can also see Eva Series Eva units having incredibly flexible body parts upon reactivation (ie. 16:30)

I think what I like so much about this is how heavy it all feels. Like gravity and physics actually matter. Like when Asuka is pulling off these maneuvers it feels like she's pulling actually G's. It's utterly incredible even more than 30 years later.
I'm not too sure about this one, but it's probably because the fight scene past 12 minutes is animated on a higher frame rate, almost frame by frame.

when i first saw this scene, i never noticed there was blood literally gushing out of her face. this movie is full of gruesome little details, it’s extremely well done

I cannot tell you how frustrated I was at Shinji for not wanting to at least rescue Asuka. If he didn't have the will to live because he's hurt others, then have the will to at least save Asuka for her sake. Man hearing the screams and seeing her arm cut in half hit my stomach.
Just to clarify, during the fight, Shinji couldn't even get into Unit 01 due to the plastic Bakelite that Misato poured all over NERV HQ, which unfortunately made it impossible to board the unit. It is frustrating seeing him not be able to help though, but the blame isn't entirely on him.

As someone said before, Eva Unit 01 was trapped in hardened bakelite, so Shinji couldn't get into it. However, I think Shinji got into it, after Eva Unit 01 broke free, because he didn't think Asuka was dead. Ibuki only said "UNIT 02 IS...ASUKA IS...ASUKA IS...!!!!", she didn't finish her sentence. Shinji probably thought Asuka was injured or in a very difficult position, but alive nonetheless. When he sees Eva Unit 02 slaughtered and in pieces, Shinji realized he arrived way too late to help Asuka...
It doesn't matter how often you watch this scene, whenever you hear that choir hit or her say "Mama", your heart sinks a little more.

I’m surprised nobody is talking about this, but Maya’s reaction to Asuka’s Eva having it’s guts pulled out gave me goosebumps. It’s just so realistic and you can hear the fear in her voice, her voice actor brings it home

Though I do think her reaction was kinda weird because she was just watching that screen of parts of the Eva blurring out, not Asuka's Eva getting absolutely mutilated.
The disturbing thing is, her scream was like, almost felt like a lifestock being butchered. I didn't wanna watch or think about Eva after this movie when I was a kid.
It was the ultimate despare, fear and pain from the bottom of her soul. I don't know how the voice actor did it, but this show is definitely not for 14 year-olds, me as the audience felt really uncomfortable to go through the last few episodes.
Can't believe this fight scene, which is like, 20 years old, is actually better than 2017 anime battles.
They had Mitsuo Iso animating and the 2017 animes don't. Advances in technology may make getting quality easier, but it can't replace sheer skill.

If I'm correct tho, the industry for anime was in a much better situation than nowaday, they had better budgets, and didn't have the go-to "Let's make it 3D because we are fuckin' lazy" (I'm not saying every modern 3D anime is bad, Houseki No Kuni looked gorgeous, but we don't get very good lookin mecha anime in 3D nowaday)
Also, the reason this looks better is also due to the director's skills, most modern anime mecha battle tend to have the robots feel very weightless, while here it actually looks like gigantics beast fighting one another instead of a mecha-reskin of an average human vs human battle. The slow movements, the extremely powerful yet extremely slow blade(ish thinguy) strikes hads a lot to the size of the machine fighting
I really wish we could get such nicely directed mecha fight nowaday, now it's all about the speed and the flashyness

Neitherman in the context of the budget tho Evangelion was massively underfunded, I guess what I'm trying to say is you don't necessarily need a higher budget as long as you have sheer skill as showcased by Hideaki anno's direction and his team's animation in Eva
15:53 and 16:04, Asuka’s VA is just incredible, that was bloodcurdling and heart-wrenching

Man, Asuka is such a legend in NGE, this fight choreography is out of this world. It's sad to see what became of the series in Rebuild, with Asuka being used almost purely as fanservice material, with the camera filming her vagina when she's so miserable with not being able to sleep anymore, and her fight later is just her becoming a drill made of light together with Mari. Depressing.

The last film (and 3.0 too) was an embarrassment to the franchise. I will never care about these bs rebuild movies, good riddance and with this i hope anno will never touch this franchise and ruin it further again but despite what he says i bet he will come back for a new one. He was hinting at one that will take place between 2.0 and 3.0 but we all know we don't need any of that sh*t since what is the point of some side story of a story we already know the ending of, what i mean is nothing we know from that movie will change the outcome of 3.0+1.0 so what is the point exactly? And this is not even getting into how he wants to milk the franchise even further by making it like gundam. So even if he personally doesn't come back other than doing one movie he will let other people milk it, so much for the sh*tty forceful "let go of eva message" huh. When he does it it is ok but when fans do it it is "escapism". The whole message of the movie falls apart because of how hypocritical it is. But ofc he has to because he needs cash for his new studio. Anno got himself a hot wife and became rich so he can do whatever he wants and keep living like an otaku but he sh*ts on other otaku for doing the same thing he does. He will keep making nerdy/otaku movies from his childhood like kamen rider and ultraman but won't let us have any fun with eva by destroying everything we like about it. The last movie was a hate letter to all old eva fans, which is funny since everyone calls end of eva the "f u to the fans" movie which couldn't be further from the truth. If you are an old eva fan EoE is a love letter to everything we love about the original series. Actual character depth, psychological focus, amazing action with beautiful choreography and cinematography (instead of the dogsh*t parody like cg from the last rebuild film), actually impactful and emotional moments and a hopeful (i would even go as far as saying it is a happy one) ending depite what the average d*mb viewer says, no excessive asspull technobable word vomit and thankfully no sh*tty in your face gratuitous fanservice (the a*s shots in the last movie were unbearable and cringe).
OG series+EoE had anti escapism message but it wasn't anti otaku this last movie feels like that because of how hateful it seems to its fans. Anno changed a lot over the years and so did his philosophy it seems. I am not sure if i can find it rn but he had an interview with saying how he gave anti escapism messages in NGE but only because some people take anime too far to the point it will take over their lives. But he said he hates when someone who is not an otaku judges otaku, he said outsiders who don't know sh*t should shut the f up. He criticized some aspects of otaku culture exactly because he himself is an otaku. I don't remeber the exact quote but it was something like "i don't understand the greatness of society either but sometimes we as otaku should be self aware and take a look at things we like in a reflective way" or whatever, the point is clear either way, but now he is content on sh*tting his fans, making fun of their intelligence and ruining all their fun just so he can give a forceful "let go of eva" message which doesn't even work since again like i said it is not only hypocritical coming from anno but also because the ending is a bs time/reality reset which is escapism 101. I know lots of people already made this joke but i have to do it again, the chad "anywhere can be paradise as long as you have the will to live", "you are worthy of love just because of existing alone you deserve happiness and you are the only one who can understand themselves properly so be nice to yourself" and "life and making connections with other people can be painful at times but it is worth trying regardless" EoE vs the virgin "rewrite the world over so you can escape the consequences of what you did", "just wait until a hot gf with big t*ts comes and rescues you" and "get some p*ssy like i (hideaki anno) did so you can be happy" 3.0+1.0 but unfortunately that last two are not gonna work for most people because we are not famous and rich (and ofc don't forget you got rich thanks to the otaku you sh*t on now) like you anno.
I am not sure if anyone will even read this but there are so many misconceptions around this last movie and rebuilds in general, i just wish that a big influencer, anituber or anyone else big in other social platforms would come out and tear this movie apart, to change the positive reception of it that it doesn't deserve at all, because otherwise the masses can't think for themselves. But doesn't seem to likely to happen with all of them s*cking its d because it was the "actual" ending and it made me happy, thank you evangelion and all these kinds of cheap cry bait videos without any substance really changed people's perception around it. I even saw some stockholm syndrome fans who feel like they have to like mari as a character after this last movie even though before they were claiming they hated her, mostly because they eat this sh*t about moving on from eva up and the other reason being she represents anno's wife so we have to like it or the worst reason being that this was the real ending shinji deserved because apparently what you need in life isn't loving yourself first and becoming independent like how the manga executed a similar ending (rebuilds stole it from here, the only difference they ruined its beautiful message) but it is about getting some big t*t groomer gf and throwing all your other friends away because you have let go of it (you have to understand it if we don't beat it over your head you d*mb mfs won't get it so we have to be really unsubtle about it). Who would imagine back in 95 that eva's ending would literally be a manic pixie dream girl ending. So funny that the franchise became what it stood up against. What a joke, a spectacular sh*tshow.
Man i really wish demo d would come out and tear apart this terrible movie but he isn't around anymore sadly since he seems to also be tired of modern anime and its fanbase like me. Well he said that he hated the movie and that it was the most embarrassed he ever felt when watching eva but i just wish he made a video about it so people can hear it, i bet that it would at least reach to a reasonable amount of people which is better than nothing.
A funny fact. In the last Rebuild movie, she doesn't change, and behaves worst than the whole series and here. Doesn't learn how to move forward as well as the whole cast, and they imply/point out the whole time in the film they became *"better"* .
The worst part is knowing she's cloned, is used for only fanservice, don't allow her to try improving her relationships, is just shown to prove just a point of being a replaceable, hopeless, toxic and hollow tsundere, lies to herself the whole time, and we are told throughout the last part of that movie her soul's been *"asleep"* the whole time in a loop until the moment these two reunites and supposedly *"made amends"* in the most let down as well as betrayal manner possible.
WTF. Yeap, completely improved character in a so-called sequel that *"fixes"* and *"gives the best wrap up"* the whole series.
The director is kinda hypocrite by calling her one of his favorite characters, yet it's personally his favorite character to make it suffer the worse as well as others.
In addition, all of this characters were scripted that way with the justification in order to show a *"Move forward/ go outside/ this is the end/go touch grass/ anti-scapism Message"* that contradicts all the time in that tetralogy as well as in the upcoming years since plenty of more movies with this thematic will be done than keeping the message of EoE which is obliterated at the same time with those movies.
It's even more a shame the only moment where she can reconciliate, is here with her mother, and know at the last scene how to behave with Shinji as well as perhaps with everyone else if it's up the air. Even so, that'll never happen thanks to the so-called sequel which discarded that idea, and *"improved"* everything by stating all the events in this film arr only a negative side to never look back anymore, and it'ss in a loop from that end until the 4th Rebuild that showcases a hollow and mischievous optimism .

@@ab-hx2ii just wanted you to know i did read every word of your comment and couldnt agree more. a part of me wishes i could return to early covid when i had unlimited time, id definitely make a longform video essay ripping apart the rebuild bit by bit. i literally cannot believe there are people who think the rebuild is better/more hopeful than the original, when the original was so much more real and honest than the escapist fantasy of the rebuild.

@@JaredLetoNo1Fan everyone died, but Misato and Asuka died before the third impact. Asuka comes back from the LCL ocean because she did the same process that allowed Shinji come back to the earth. But effectively, she died when all that longinus lances went through the eva. And very probably with an terrible agony. :(

この後の展開も全体的に心をえぐってくるけどこのネックレスを見て嗚咽吐きながら泣くシンジくんのシーンからのG線上のアリアをバックに映される２号機vs量産機っていう一連の流れが狂気的すぎて初見の時ここらへんから最後まで目眩と頭痛が止まらなかった

I've watched the movie and this clip so many times and I'm shocked at how it still manages to choke me up. God, thank you for Hideaki Anno.
Asuka's battle here was a well deserved time to shine for her and the best battle in the series. Love her pure, berserker rage. There wasn't enough juice in her EVA for her to kill to her hearts content.
And yet when most of her body was ripped apart, she still managed to move her EVA's arm with pure rage and determination. She wanted to go for that kill. It took growing up to realize how absolutely amazing of a pilot and character she was.
Very minor detail I noticed but makes it all the better, at 12:31 when Asuka reaches back with the sword, you can see the sword behind her in her pilot view

2うくけこ マジレスすると今の2号機は暴走してて母親が守ろうとしている状況であって2号機の制御はアスカ母にあるわけで エントリープラグやられて大切な娘に怪我させたくないから 神経接続解除を拒否している状況 ちなみに電源ないのに動くのは 元から動かしてたのは電源で本体と繋がるための電量であってエヴァ本体（母親）が意思操作すればエヴァ本体が動くのと同じ状況なため動ける。
シンエヴァ公開前に劇場限定で上映してたの観に行った。最高だった。この動画で予習してから行ったけど、実際に劇場で観る価値ありまくりだった。最高で吐き気止まらんかった(褒め)

いや、確かミサトさんと別れた後エヴァには乗ろうとしたけど、ベークライトで搭乗口が塞がれていて乗れなかったのではないでしょうか？18:17のセリフは乗りたくても乗れないということではないかなと思います

グロ表現と狂気で霞みがちだけど間違いなくアニメ史に残る名シーン、エヴァの映像美・演技力が凝縮されてる。
What makes this fight a absolute masterpiece are the cockpit shots and how G-forces are shown to effect Asuka when she's piloting. The way her hair whips around with the change in momentum emphasizes the raw power of her machine just as much as any external shot of EVA-02 destroying enemies does. *I mean just look at **12:14** - **12:34** . You can actually feel the weight and power being thrown around by these things.* Its glorious

And that is where Rebuild fails with it's spinning super robots. It removes all sense of mass from these lumbering beasts and turns them into generic gravity defying robots. Another awesome thing about this scene is that it has panning camera shots of the action, which is pretty tough to do in 2D since you need to have your frames constantly moving to one side and a larger background piece. The animation in this film is flat out amazing.

So crazy how Asuka's sync rate with Unit 02 was so high that she was experiencing the same injuries as Unit 02; her arm split in half and her eyes started bleeding.

No! Actually that's not what's happening! Usually only pain is transferred to the user (but the user is protected by their own AT-field), however the Lance of Longinus (even though this is a fake or replicated one) is a special case that is designed to penetrate AT-fields like a knife cutting through butter. It's the Lance weapons that cause the direct damage, not the high sync rate (which would only make the pain transfer to the user). Her arm is actually split in two, but when Unit-02 is eviscerated she's only experiencing the pain and not actually getting mutilated. However the arm splitting and all the lances hitting her after that DO cause direct bodily harm.
