+Mew Two - "It was a before and after for me too."
I couldn't have said it better myself. It was for me, too. SPOILER ALERT:
And it's an especially poignant story when you consider that it would be a major "before and after" for the main character himself. Imagine this: you are living your usual, fairly dull life as a middle school student, with nearly no social life, and your peers teasing and harassing you at school. Then, purely by chance, someone of your own age group comes along who actively makes graceful social advances towards you, and the two of you almost immediately become very close friends, each of you being the ONLY friend that the other has, and get used to ooking forward to meeting her after every school day as a matter of course.
After months of this, the most recent memory you have of her is watching her walking away from you in the rain after a fun day, smiling back at you as she goes, obviously looking forward to the next time you will see each other; clearly indicating she very much likes you, and, in conjunction with other interactions with her, suggesting that she may even someday be open to a romantic relationship with you. The two of you are looking forward to your next meeting and many good days to come, year after year, confident that even your VERY NEXT interaction will take the friendship a big step further.
Then, the next day, you come home after an outing to be told that she has died, and you're left hanging with your last memory of her having been one of a situation open to many enjoyable interactions to come, as if, as I’ve said, the very next meeting could have been another major step in the friendship. So much hope, so many good future prospects - now dashed. After not even a year of friendship, she has been taken away from you. It would be a memory and relationship without resolution or closure. The relationship would feel so unfinished. It would have been suddenly cut short while building up to something great. Interacting with her, until this point, been such an integral part of your daily life that you may even feel like you have lost a part of your self.
In the aftermath, everything and everyone you see or experience in your daily life would remind you of what you've lost - the lights and colours of the house you live in, the dinner table and tablecloth you sit down at to eat every morning and gloomy winter evening, the room you sleep in, the patterns and colours on the covers you sleep under, the street you walk out on to every morning, the colour of the school bus you step into each school day, the walls of the classrooms you enter and sit in for hour after hour - all would remind you of your loss, each sight and experience permeated with grief and reminding you of your suffering. You might, at times, momentarily think you should talk to your friend about how you feel, only to immediately remember that she is the one who is gone, and that is precisely the reason why you are feeling like you need someone to talk to. Plus, in Jesse's case, to add salt to the wound, you would even have to wake up every morning, day after day, year after year, to see your neighbour's house - once your closest friend's house - and accept that she is not in it, except perhaps in the form of ashes in an urn on the mantlepiece or in the attic or the basement. And trying to avoid these things by isolating yourself would only magnify your pain. Nothing you see would feel the same after her death than before it. The significance of every ordinary sight would definitively be changed. It would take months, if not years, and some new and very supportive and close-knit relationships, to finally feel normal and comfortable again, and to accept what has happened - to feel at peace with it. That year of your life would be forever coloured with your memory of her, and of losing her. Your life would, from that point forward, be starkly divided into into periods before and after that year. The memories pre-Leslie would now be laden with pain due to the naivety and innocence you now remember having lived with, and the tragedy itself that you now know later came but did not see coming, and the memories post-Leslie would be laden with the burden of loss and grief. Losing her indeed would be a heavy burden and a major, defining obstacle in your life story.

There's something so beautiful and irreplaceable in this movie and the book it's based on. What we see in the movie - and what's explicitly discussed in the book - is that Leslie has an impact on Jesse that changes the way he sees himself and the world. At the beginning of the narrative, he races so that he can win the approval of his classmates because he sees himself as failing to fulfill a role that society has set for him. It's implied that art is seen as "feminine" or "gay," and that he's trying to prove his masculinity and worth by excelling in athleticism.
Then Leslie comes along, beats him in the race, and dashes his dreams - and that is important to the story, because his dream of fitting in and finding self-worth through others' approval *needed to be dashed.* She drags him out into the woods and shows him a new way to see the world, helps him imagine more abstract moral concepts like duty and courage, and appreciates his art rather than putting him down for having an unconventional interest. And let's not forget that Leslie was bullied too - her talent for running (and in the book, her haircut) get her picked on for being unfeminine. They're both the weird ones out, and together they escape the arbitrary standards of an unaccepting society and create worlds and lives which belong only to them.
To the casual reader/watcher it may just seem like a game that a couple of kids are playing and will eventually grow out of, but it changes Jesse for the better. Near the end of the book, it says, "It
was up to him to pay back to the world in beauty and caring what Leslie had loaned him in vision and strength. As for the terrors ahead - for he did not fool himself that they were all behind him - well, you just have to stand up to your fear and not let it squeeze you white." In the movie and book, we see him build the bridge and bring his sister to Terabithia. We can tell that he's found a new form of self-actualization that's based on his inner character and what he can create, rather than on what other people have to say about him.
The main message is that, no matter what you're good at or what others think of you or how insignificant your accomplishments may seem, the only person it needs to be important to is you. Even if you're just a fifth grader in a small town who knows like 30 people and is liked by fewer, *it matters that you're here.* What you can do for the world, for your family, even just for yourself, matters. It matters that you exist.

They're both the weird ones out, and together they escape the arbitrary standards of an unaccepting society and create worlds and lives which belong only to them." THANK YOU! Some analysis of the story tend to make out Leslie as an example of the 'Manic Pixie Dream Girl' Trope, and that simply isn't the case. Her family not being habitual TV-watchers, her deep love of reading, being somewhat outspoken and her colourful and offbeat fashion sense, all set her apart from their school crowd a bit. And as Jess's dad notes at her funeral wake, although free-spirited and somewhat outgoing, his daughter had trouble making close friends. Leslie grew a lot from her relationship with Jess as well, with him pushing her to reach out to Janice Avery, providing her with company when her often busy writer parents were occupied, and most importantly a compassionate confidant who understood her deep imagination and natural flair for storytelling, when most others couldn't grasp her strong creative vibe.

This was the first movie I saw that I was invested in. Not just in the cool visuals and action scenes, but invested in the characters, and the story.
I had seen Mufasa's death in The Lion King. I had seen Bambi's mother die in Bambi. But nothing compared to what I felt when Jack Aarons said those infamous words: *"your friend Leslie is dead".*
For the first time a movie had actually made me emotional. A movie had challenged me. A movie had taken me to a place I never thought possible. A movie viewing had, at that moment, ceased to be a passive act. But was instead something that called for my active participation.
In that moment I had my mind opened to what storytelling could do and how it could affect someone so much. How a collection of pictures, words, musical notes, and ideas could change someone. Could inspire someone. And could lead to a *"Mind Wide Open!”*

This film holds a very special place in my heart. Growing up, I had a similar story to Jesse's. No friends (I didn't even go to public school, my parents insisted on homeschooling me and my siblings), a family falling apart with my parents separating (and feeling powerless to stop it), remote country life in southern Maryland, financial hardship (I also wore my sister's hand-me-downs!), unhealthy religiosity, budding artistic and creative skills antagonized by a pressure to do "manly" things, and, unbeknownst to me at the time, latent homosexuality. When I saw this film for the first time in theaters, as a vulnerable fourteen-year-old, it made me feel seen.
Leslie was the friend I needed then, and as she did for Jesse, the character helped me through the dark time. She inspired me to stay true to my interests and what I wanted to do with my life.
Grew up and went to college. After graduating I was hired by Walt Disney Imagineering in Florida, before heading out to California to be a story artist for film and TV. I'm exactly where and who I need to be, and I want to inspire others to do the same.
If you happen to be another "Jesse" reading this, to you I say, don't give up on what inspires you, but also don't be afraid to try new things. What is it you want most? The journey of life is excruciating, yes, but the joy you are able to experience and create along the way is what makes it so special. The world can't wait to see what you have to give! ❤

Fun Fact: Disney originally wanted to put Leslie in a coma. Have her in a coma which will have the same effects as the death scene, but slightly different with a hope of her awaking. They wanted to make it seem like she was going to die, when in actuality her eyes open at the end and there will be a after credit scene with her, the boy, and the boy's little sister going across the bridge. But the author demanded for this ending to happen. A lot of authors do have control over their movies on how it ends. If the company does not follow the authors orders, the author can simply pull it from production. Even if this was a beautiful movie with a ending, Disney wanted to give us an ending with Leslie being alive and possibly a part 2.

Thank you for uploading this track. It makes me feel I'm entering miraculous land of Terabithia. I love this film so much. It brings me many good memories from my childhood, and it has so brilliant, deep and hartbreaking story. TheBridge to Terabithia makes me pleased and sad at the same time. It surprises me how deeply it toutched me, even if I'm a bit old now. I wish I was young kid once more.
