Life too short for long UA-cam videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.
Welcome to the vlog. Warning: this one is a bit of a slog so if you just want to hear the guitars and skip all the waffle, the timings below and the timestamps in the video will help you.
But for those of you who do like to torture yourselves, I hope you enjoy this journey. It started as a Gretsch pickup fit idea, but having just done the Casino and given their relative similarity as guitars… well, it was begging for a comparison. So that’s how it ended up!
I start by comparing the Casino and the Gretsch before the Gretsch pickup swap, then labour through the pickup fit before comparing them again. There’s even a bit of ‘music’ so you can hear them in context towards the end.
    Please enjoy the episode!

It makes my heart sooo happy to know I’m not the only one who can take a fairly straightforward process like switching pickups and making it a multi day ordeal with a ton of “fiddly” frustrating bits. All this work just to get a new sound that will instantly be criticized by my wife saying “I can’t tell a difference?” Lol

It can do everything from brutal to ethereal. I also own one of the G2255-P90s (also heavily modified) , although now they’ve just released a new line of Electromatics equipped with soap bar P90s that sound MUCH more like my ideal P90 tone, I kinda wish I’d held off on the 2255.

I love them more than any other pickups. And isn't that what gain pedals are for??? I have to boost the shit out of mine to compete with my Tele or V but it's sooooo worth it. I have the exact same Gretsch. Saw it hanging on the wall of my local music shop and walked away with it. The first arrived sounding good, but after reading a few forum posts, I realized the pickups came set far too low. Raised them up with a few turns of the screwdriver. Incredible difference! The pickups just came to life.
I can understand going the single coil route but I say do some adjustments and give the Gretsch pickups a chance. They're really very nice.
The 'P90's' that came with my Chinese Epiphone Casino are pretty nice. I can't see spending the couple of hundred on a set of Lollars would be justified by my ear.

In the mid-70's, I picked up a '64 Gretsch Country Gentleman for $275. Lovely guitar, with a sweeter, smaller sound than my other guitars. Something of a one-trick pony, and I moved it along after a year. The Electromatic strikes me the same way- while I can see enjoying the stock one in some circumstances, hearing the Casino with Lollars gave me a new appreciation for it. Plus, the price difference means that after upgrades, it's still cheaper than a stock Gretsch. The Bigsby and the art deco appearance are a factor if you like them, but I personally wouldn't miss either.

Great video, Mick. I really enjoy researching, doing the work myself, and learning along the way too. I feel so much more connected to my guitars in general after having done some mods along the way. I think it's also part of what's caused me to be less precious about them, actually appreciating the little nicks and dings they've gotten along the way. I got a 5420tg in a trade (also a great G&L Fullerton Legacy in same trade! Yes!). I was mostly enamored with the beauty of the white and gold, along with the overall vibe of the guitar. I believe mine is a 2019 MIK w/ rw board and thumb fret markers). Anyway, it's such a different beast than any other guitar I own that I have to reset my amps and pedals to get it where I want it. OTOH, and somewhat in parallel to your comparison to the Casino, I sold an older (2012 IIRC) Epi 339 because I didn't care for the neck. I replaced it with the similarly sized D'Angelico Mini DC with the Sweetwater upgrades (locking tuners, flame burst top/sides/back, and Seymours (Jazz/JB). They're the same prices as each other. Watching this great vid really makes me ponder what to do, if anything, to my 5420. I'm thinking that to make the change, I would probably want a more drastic change in character than the stock blacktops to TV Jones swap (and pots, etc.). I'm curious - did Gretsch offer any other pickup options - like HBs or p90s that would fit?
P.S. - Thanks so much for all your and yours and Mick's great shows over the years! Love 'em!
Oh, and a plug for the under-appreciated D'Angelicos. Fabulous guitars coming out of Indonesia!

I have a green Gretsch 5620T made 2013 in the same SPG Factory like your white Gretsch.
At first i just wanted to have a look at the cheaper Gretsch Streamliner when they came out but my local music store only had some Electromatic, i took a look and i instantly fell in love with this 5620T with Cat's Eye soundholes so i decided it's worth to spend double the price of a Streamliner on that guitar and it's my favorite guitar now, still enjoy picking it up after several years of owning it.

Hey Mick- Really enjoyed this video, thank you. I love how slow and deliberate you are in working on your guitars (in this video relative to the pickup change). You truly seem to enjoy the work. It’s not a race. And it would serve me well to do the same... relish the process, take my time, learn - and just embrace the opportunity to understand how to make these instruments better and grasp how all of these components fit together (or sometimes don’t). I am beginning to truly enjoy working on my guitars - but I used to dread it. I just wanted to play. But there is something very rewarding about putting in the time to improve an instrument. This really comes across and I just wanted to mention it... cheers!

44+: On paper I’d be the Epi format and pickups all day, but that Gretsch sounds fab - lovely clarity. Nice to hear you playing snippets of your original tune too. I’ve written and released a few songs since last year’s lockdown and often noodle them as well (CXM 1978 doesn’t hurt either; it’s addictive). It’s quite satisfying after years of noodling (and playing live) other people’s (very good) songs to break out a few little bits that are my flailing around and recording. I also prefer you playing your stuff on those guitars to the Chet Atkins pastiche (to your point from the VCQ this week).
