My grandmother always said the Irish cry at baptisms and laugh at funerals. I find that becoming truer as the years go by.

We only laugh at the funerals of the brutish, we've had a lot of them in Ireland

Like Ireland, many cemeteries in Denmark are used by the public as open space/gardens. It is common to see families and couples picnicking amongst the headstones on warm days and I think that's just brilliant.
    Wonderful video, Sam. 😊

I'm from Memphis, TN and people have all but stopped eating and gathering after funerals. Used to be that people would meet at a relative's home, or church, after the funeral and people would eat. Now it's just funeral, cemetery, and everyone goes their own way. It's really sad that we're losing our culture.

I've always found Irish Keening to be hauntingly beautiful. There's something magical and primal about it.

My mum's side of the family is Irish-Canadian, and they held a relatively traditional funeral/wake for my grandfather when he died. It was the most fun I've had with my extended family thus far. Firstly, grandad's final wish was for no one to wear black at his funeral and we respected that request. Secondly, it was essentially a celebration. The siblings all swapped stories and the many grandchildren enjoyed listening to their parents as they loudly and delightedly called out grandad's heavily embellished stories with enthusiasm. The eulogy was hilarious. The four sons had ordered a keg to share, though it was kept a secret from grandma. The six daughters figured their brothers out quickly. Afterwards, we laid him to rest and had a gathering at a local venue to continue the celebration of his life. Honestly, a wonderful time. I don't think that very Upstate New York catholic priest has ever been more confused by a crowd of funeral attendees. Not one tear the whole day, only joy and well wishes into the next life. There's nothing somber about death in Irish culture.

Hi ! I'm an Irish person who lives in a rural part of Ireland and Ive been to many a wake , and I just wanna say this video is absolutely excellent !! Everything is spot-on , I love that there's finally an accurate video on wake/funeral culture in Ireland . One thing Id say is that in the last 15 years or so , Ireland has become more left-wing and socially-open than the UK , with the single largest political party here being the left-wing Sinn Fein and being one of the only countries in Europe with overwhelming support for Palestine . Overall , tysm for depicting Ireland in a serious , non-stereotypical way . Go raibh mile maith agat !!!

Thanks for another great video. We have had a funeral home scandal in the UK this week thought you might look into it and comment. Thanks for all your hard work.

We’re not Irish, but I’ve always known a funeral to have lots of food and people to gather. At my dad’s memorial we put on a feast for everyone, I made the playlist, a mix of his favorite music, & because he was an artist, we all wore color, no black & we asked our guests to do the same.

Hello, fantastic video but as of the 2021 census there are 5.1 million people living in the Republic not 2 million?
Also your pronunciation of Glasnevin was really good. It's Glass-Nev-Inn

I had not thought of using death records, to locate where my people came from. That should have been where we started looking first. I get talked into doing a lot of things (I don't want to do) by my sister. I'll have a better idea, the next time she wants me to go with her. Thank you.

@TabooEducation maybe next time you get to visit an amazing cemetery you can sneak in a pic next to notable tombstone? I'll be curious to see if you are a vintage black leather low shoe with a big buckle or a black leather mid calf lace up boot kind of gal...🤣 I'll just have to keep watching. I definitely think I'm right with the black leather shoes regardless of style. Did I at least get that right?

@user-cl1ew9ki5i I have been meaning to do a tour of a local natural burial place but the idea of vlogging irks me. I'll have to get over that. I'm more partial to a latter mid calf boot myself. 👢 they're very slimming for the feet and I can walk all day in them 😁😁 I tend to go with brown leather most of the year though

@TabooEducation well that'll teach me for making assumptions. LOL
I think you could avoid the blogging if you wanted. You had some incredible footage and the narration was clear and interesting over the top. Blogging can be tedious and getting the right equipment can be trial and error. I've watched some of my favourite creators struggle through this process. Also having to re-shoot content when you fluff it, or have wind or noise interference. Anyway that's just what I think because creators need to still enjoy creating. I think too many allow the "system" to make them feel under too much pressure.
You have a lovely weekend 😊

Historical Cemeteries are part of our history and culture and to destroy them would be like cutting out a piece of our collective history. I love old Cemeteries as a lot of them are beautiful and very peaceful.

    I AM MELANCHOLY AND MIRTH!
I comfort people by crying with them but then laughing simultaneously with them or gently teasing them. Its a weird black humor
But the luck of the Irish requires as such. Tis but only true
Your language skills are amazing ma'am

I moved to Ireland from the UK for work for 18 months and when housemate asked what’s the biggest cultural difference I did say death! She laughed and said, “yes you don’t get rip.ie over in the UK”. Mass emails were sent out whenever a colleague had a loss and then you went to the funeral if you worked with them, whereas in the UK you would go to a funeral because you knew the deceased not their relative. I was also amazed how they got everything done in three days! I actually think they have a much healthier attitude to death than the English!

My family on both sides are mostly Scots, Irish, or English. Primarily Irish. (My paternal grandmother was German, and my great grandparents were Lutheran.) However none of them were Catholic, which I find interesting. We tended towards Methodist on the whole, and in latter years little if any religion.

When I was young, I didn’t realise that the wake was unique to Ireland until I saw that one episode of Derry Girls (you know the one)

Another thing that's very Irish, is the amount of funerals we go to. I went to one last week and the week before, I've got two this week, and they're all funerals I have to go to, as in I'd be missed if I didn't. When someone close to you dies here, you may not know all the people who attend the funeral, but you'll certainly know who didn't attend.

    Glasnevin cemetery
"Glass-nevv-in" the e is an "eh" sound 😊
Glas Naíon (Glass-Neeon) - the fount stream
Glasnevin takes its name from the original early Irish Glais Noeden. Glais usually means boundary stream, and Naíon can mean infants or fount. In this case it is believed the name came from a "Fount Stream" that ran through the monastic settlement here.
    Slán a Chara ❤

Have you considered covering Quaker funeral practices? I find them to be quite different than most other Christian and Christian adjacent practices I've been too (at least as an American).
