One of my favorite perks that Alaska Airlines offers is called Club 49. It’s available to people who have an Alaska address (when they apply) and allows for two free checked bags when flying to or from Alaska. And very little if any extra fees. I’ve found this makes the complete cost of my ticket usually less than with other airlines. And if you purchase your ticket with an AKAirlines Visa you get one free luggage regardless of where you fly. Having had to fly with other airlines periodically, I’ve found the customer service and flight attendants with AKAirlines to be substantially better. Especially at the Anchorage airport. So friendly, respectful and helpful.
Alaska MISSED at being a category carrier killer after buying Virgin America and NOT using or improving upon it's premium product!! I'm convinced Alaska could create a sub fleet dedicated to long haul only with 4 classes of service. Lie Flat - Premium (existing F class) - Comfort (existing premium econ) and then Economy!
Slight clarification: It was a hundred years before Alaska became a state after the US bought it. As there are next to no roads/highway connecting major cities/towns in the state, aviation was critical for all necessary activities. And like Gander and Goose Bay in the east, a necessary refuelling stop for commercial aircraft after WW2 crossing the respective ocean.
Thank you Patrick for your trip here. Hahaha😊! Yes, the long-haul trips I need the wide body aircraft with the lay flat seats. Being in the middle part of the country the wide-body aircraft are still needed to fly the long-hauls. But I do hope Alaska Airlines works out the perks thst customers want. Also, for me being a former crew member from United Airlines gave me the experience I am glad I have seen the industry.😊
They are switching to a new version of the same Recarro first class seat, actually. It has a full leg rest. They are also moving the tablet holder from the tray table to the seat back. Also Alaska still flies LA to New York, but to Newark not JFK.
Im sold on Alaska Airlines. Been flying for 40 years and been on them all. They remind me of a local donut shop that doesn’t have the bacon and Froot Loops on the top…but damn i love being there and what they offer is just right for me.
They definitely have a strong allegiance. Their product has much to offer and I have enjoyed my flights with them recently, but I just feel that it doesn't work in their more premium markets
Great video, Patrick! However, I have to point out a few small issues with this video, keep in mind. These are not criticisms merely acknowledgments. First off, Alaska Airlines although not having many 737 MAX 8’s currently has plans for more than 20 on order still with more 737 MAX 9’s also on order. Secondly, Alaska is the United States least populated state simply due to its geography. Given the fact that over 65% of the land is uninhabitable due to inhospitable conditions, mostly being severe winters with lack of food and water, in truth America’s least densely populated state that could actually support more population growth is Wyoming. Third and final point, Anchorage Airport has still continued to grow in airline service, mostly from Alaska Air, but following the Alaska-Hawaiian merger, which has just been approved by the USDOJ Anchorage Airport hopes to pick up a lot moreairlines service especially since Hawaiian Airlines international network is quite extensive. Anchorage hopes there could be flights someday as far as Sydney, Tokyo and Seoul for example, bypassing having to stop in Hawaii if the new Hawaiian-Alaska group acquire some more wide bodies say some more B787s or maybe the B777X perhaps. Overall things for Alaska the state as well as the airline are really looking up and I’m excited to see what the future holds! Cheers 🥂 my friend, Caleb’s Aviation 😅
I flew Alaska "first" to LA or SFO (can't remember) few years ago. It was the best preimium service and food I've had in domestic flights. Even without the flat seats, great experience. Flat seats only needed for the west coast late night departures
As someone living in a rural Alaska area served by Alaska Air (Ketchikan, I care a lot less about lie flat seats and investment in a premium experience and more about the availability of flights and expertise of those flying in harsh Alaska flying conditions. I admit, this is niche, but as they have an almost monopoly on flights (we do have one daily Delta flight for part of the summer), it is very important. Also, they have a lot more elite mileage members, so less people pay for first class in general. I'm Gold 75K and get upgraded pretty much every flight. I don't think I'd pay for the first class product, but again, I realize my experience and wants are atypical.
hey patrick- AS flight attendant here. the compensation for first class flight attendants at alaska isn't actually 2x pay, it's just an additional $2 added onto your base pay. our first class definitely needs a facelift especially considering the fact that premium products in air travel are becoming more and more popular. hope to see you on a future flight! p.s. that burger is fire lol
Sorry Alaska Airlines, but this 737 cabin is just not appropriate for a 5400 km route like Anchorage to New York. You must provide lieflat seats on such long routes. I mean Hawaiian Airlines even offers lieflat seats on 4000 km journeys from Los Angeles to Honolulu.
I understand your point. However, Hawaiian utilizes A330s and 787s that are already equipped for international long haul travel on these routes. As Alaska doesn’t have that kind of network, it probably doesn’t make sense have this feature. Alaska isn’t as big for cross country flights as like a partner such as American (who’s slowly removing their subfleet A321Ts with flatbeds from service until they get their long range NEOs)
Their FC food service is by far the worse it has ever been. The good ole days of a hot meal presented elegantly is no longer. As a matter of fact, I probably would refuse the meal even though I paid a FC fare and to pre order a meal, sorry, that "ain't" for me so I am afraid I just don't go along with the way US carriers offer food and by the way, AA, DL and UA offer poor food service, that is when you get it domestically and watch out for their international offerings. It really is disgusting from what it used to be! Thanks!
I truly love Alaska Airlines, but their first class product is becoming uncompetitive from a hard product standpoint. I have no idea why anyone would chose Alaska on LAX/SFO to JFK when the other large airlines offer lie flat seats. Obviously they have a monopoly on Alaska and the ANC-JFK route is awesome. But a 7-hour redeye in a recliner is… disappointing.
Totally agree... although these work on like 90% of their routes. That's why I kinda feel like a subfleet of premium planes (like AA) would benefit them!
Some consolation: I also only got one meal service in a 6,5 hour international flight with Singapore Airlines, so unfortunately I guess it’s not too uncommon.
Looks like a traditional short haul carriers premium offering; flew Virgin Australia business class on a 737 from Perth to Brisbane (about 4.5 hours) - daytime flight so didn't even investigate the recline -the view out of the window was epic all the way.
I've been on Alaska's PDX-BOS, 5.5 hours. That's a long time to be on a narrow body, especially when you get the last row seat and it doesn't recline 😢
Brilliant vlog, always on point and fair, just make sure if I ever sit next to you on a flight you won't get any sleep as I have 1 million questions to ask you lol
If they need to compete on San Francisco and LAX to EWR/JFK they need to add flat seats also this one ANC-EWR/JFK think of their Taiwanese future One World partner Starlux having 2-2 layout on narrowbody A321neo. Option 2 take the B767-332/ER DL Thompson Vantage put them on premium transcontinental service routes helping out American Airlines. And then feed the Australian Japanese Hong Konger partners out west followed by transatlantic Partners British and Spaniards.
Thanks I really enjoy your videos, very informative. I have however just one suggestion, what about adding a map route of the flight on your intro or at some other point of the video, I think it visually enriches the videos, just a suggestion.

I mean they do go int'l in North America, but no long haul. Even still though, their competition offers a far better product on the more premium routes for roughly the same cost
Greetings from San Francisco. Last week Friday, I flew Alaska, Boeing 737-900ER from Honolulu to San Francisco for the 1st time, flight is nearly full, good and okay, 4 and a half hours, they give snack and free water, which is good, I slept 1 and a half hours, it's good and okay, I am surprised they skip row 5 and they have 4 lavatories, 1 at the front and 3 at the back, this time it's before the back galley, it's small and tight, including the sink), it's unexpected. For the 1st time, they assign 5E, which is premium economy/premium plus for free because it's nearly a full flight, wow behind business class, the seat and legroom is good and okay, but unfortunately the seat width is too narrow at less than 17 inches because I don't have enough shoulder room to share with my seatmate and I feel quite cramped and uncomfortable, but I am okay an the worst part is they don't open the window shade for takeoff and landing on afternoon and even evening flight if I don't have a window seat and it's so annoying, even though the cabin tell the passenger to open the window shade, but the passenger didn't (only on US flight, that's weird.)
Virgin America had a great product, especially in first class, but it was poorly managed and haemmorhaged money. If it was better run then its inflight product could have become the standard for the US domestic aviation industry.
Virgin America had one of the best customer experiences I've ever found in an airline... at least in the last 20-30 years. Too bad their entire model was destroyed. Its definitely unfortunate
Honestly I don’t hate the paper cups. At least they’re compostable. The plastic ones are a waste. If they aren’t going to use glass I’d prefer the paper at least
Nah I mean there’s been some accidents for sure but there isn’t really any modern aircraft that I’d say need to be banned. That’s what we have Airworthiness Directives for as well
But yes, Alaska very lacking in first. I assume they know this, and could have been a reason why they are the only US carrier to offer lounge access with a domestic first class ticket.
Booooo Alaska airlines. They went out of business and did not refund my money Tried going through the state of Alaska court system and they did nothing to refund the consumer
@@tmcorbett It is Inappropriate and shows a lack of respect for yourself. This is his job and he should be dressed appropriately not like he is going to the beach.
ALASKA is a LCC leisure airline. They are very conservative with their routes and SEA centric. I am a regular on their SFO-JFK and usually pay $1,300 for up front. I shockingly saw in early next year, prices in the 2k to 3K range. As AS no longer require flight segments for their qualifying tiers, I definitely will switch to AA, while crediting AS, for my flights.

It's better than Euro-Business, but I don't think there's a 7h flight anywhere in Euro-Business
Unfortunately, there is, like Berlin or Cologne to Dubai in an A320 by Condor or Eurowings. They just started these horror routes this year.
There are a few my mind goes to Air Baltic from Riga Latvia 🇱🇻 to Dubai 🇦🇪 it’s almost 7 hours with EuroBiz on their all Airbus A220 fleet.
There’s a Virgin Australia flight from Tokyo to Carins that’s long almost 7 hours.

Nah I mean there’s been some accidents for sure but there isn’t really any modern aircraft that I’d say need to be banned. That’s what we have Airworthiness Directives for as well
Babe wake up, new Patrick Shea video
But yes, Alaska very lacking in first. I assume they know this, and could have been a reason why they are the only US carrier to offer lounge access with a domestic first class ticket.
I like a paper boarding pass. I find this lack of paper annoying.
I don’t mind as long as there’s proper charging outlets. Alaska figured that out… Southwest not as much
People see max 737 Boeing on photo 👇
Booooo Alaska airlines. They went out of business and did not refund my money

Stop being Wikipedia. It is extremely irritating and annoying.
Still mad about information in an informational video I see?
Flying in First Class wearing shorts is a Huge NO - NO!!!!
10 years ago maybe
@@brianperez726 Wearing shorts on any airline flight is Inappropriate and reflects badly on your character.
@@cggs002who cares? I’m always roasting anywhere I am, what do you care what others wear? Is that really impacting your experience?
@@tmcorbett It is Inappropriate and shows a lack of respect for yourself. This is his job and he should be dressed appropriately not like he is going to the beach.
Imma be comfy... you'll live bro

I wear a diaper when I fly. It holds 3-4 heavy pisses.
^^^ This guy gets it lol
ALASKA is a LCC leisure airline. They are very conservative with their routes and SEA centric. I am a regular on their SFO-JFK and usually pay $1,300 for up front. I shockingly saw in early next year, prices in the 2k to 3K range. As AS no longer require flight segments for their qualifying tiers, I definitely will switch to AA, while crediting AS, for my flights.
Yea those transcon routes are tough with Alaska when all the other carriers offer lie flat options
That's super cool! Never knew about all that!
