  • The sports curses in America are present in every sport. With the curse of the billy goat, the curse of the bambino, the curse of Billy Penn, the Based God curse, madden curse, and many others, these have become scapegoats for tortured fans. These fandoms include the Chicago Cubs, Boston Red Sox, Detroit Lions, Cleveland, Atlanta, Buffalo, and DC sports fans. But with all the pain, the joy from watching a curse end is like no other.

Also I forgot to mention the presidents trophy curse (for hockey) which to those who don’t know what the presidents trophy is, it goes to the team who has the best regular season record in the NHL for that season, and the curse goes if you get the presidents trophy(for the best record) you won’t make the Stanley Cup finals, a recent example of this is the Boston Bruins last season, who actually funny enough got the best regular season record ever in NHL history and lost in the 1st round by the worst team who clinched the playoffs: the Florida Panthers.

    • @anakinsolo719

The "curse" more says that you just won't win the Cup than not even making the Finals. It really comes more down to teams that pace themselves in the regular season have more in the tank for a deep Cup run. When the Canucks won the President's Trophy in 2011, they responded to it by saying that all it meant for them was guaranteed home-ice advantage, nothing more.

I'll always say that the Curse of the Billy Goat was really the Curse of John McGraw/Fred Merkle. The Cubs hadn't won a World Series since 1908, when they won the NL pennant controversially due to the Fred Merkle "Bonehead" incident. After the end of the season, John McGraw gave his players medals that said "The Real National League Champions - 1908". Knowing that John McGraw would do anything to win, I wouldn't put it below him to go get a hex put on the Cubs, not allowing them to win again until they admitted they stole the Giants' pennant of 1908.

Another curse in the NHL was the Curse of Bobby Orr (or the Curse of Noel Picard) which was on the St. Louis Blues. After Picard tripped Bobby Orr in the 1970 Stanley Cup Finals after Orr scored the cup-winning goal the Blues would never make the Stanley Cup Finals until after Picard died in 2018 when a year later they would finally make the Finals, beat the Bruins in Game 7 in Boston and finally win the Stanley Cup. The Blues failed twice to go to the finals, first in 1986 losing Game 7 to the Calgary Flames and the double overtime goal by Steve Yzerman of the Detroit Red Wings in 1996. It was a 49-year curse on the Blues.

Canada's Cup Curse is called The Curse of McSorely's Stick.
In the 1993, Montreal Canadiens coach Jacques Demers challenged the curve on Los Angeles Kings defensemen Marty McSorely's stick. McSorely was awarded a penalty, and the Canadiens scored a game tieing goal on the powerplay and won in OT. This change the tides of the series, and the Canadiens won the Cup.
In 1994, the Vancouver Canucks played for the Cup. Losing to the New York Rangers.
It was another 10 years before a Canadian team would play for the Cup. And despite a goal that was CLEARLY in, the Calgary Flames lost the Cup to the Tampa Bay Lightning.
And none of the 4 Canadian teams to play for the Cup since 2004 have won. Canada sold its soul for a cheap penalty.

Another curse that is missing is curse of the pottsville maroons. So this affects the Arizona Cardinals who have the longest drought in all of professional sports and have only won 2 NFL champs. Now this curse is odd as it is dealing with their first win. They lost to the Maroons but the Maroons were kicked out of the league and the Cardinals were given the championship but they didn't accept it until years later which was after their won their second one. Since then they have been cursed by the town Pottsville even after they have moved from Chicago to st Louis and then to Arizona.

He was an owner of the Duluth Eskimos/Kelleys in the 20s but was promised part-ownership of the next team that could called Minnesota a permanent home. That ended up being the Vikings who ironically also were given the same colors as Ole Haugsrud's high school of Central High School of Superior, Wisconsin and bared the same name. I actually pointed this out on another sports curse video, but thought I would note it here regarding Canada's unnamed Stanley Cup curse.
...During the '95/'96 season, Roy clashed multiple times with then-Canadiens head coach Mario Tremblay. Then in a game against the Red Wings, he gave up 9 goals. After he was pulled, he stared right at the Canadiens' owner at his seat by the players bench and told him it was his last game. (source: Wikipedia.)
...Following a suspension, Roy was traded to the Avalanche in the most lop-sided deal in NHL history. The Avs were formerly the Quebec Nordiques who relocated during the off-season. With Roy, the former Nordiques would win the Cup in the first year of their relocation.
...No team from Canada has won the Cup since.
...Granted, no real 'curse' was inflicted, but it makes for a great story. The greatest goaltender of his time period, has a falling out with hockey's most decorated team in Montreal, gets sent packing to a team that used to play in Canada, who then proceed to win the Cup. That right there, is curse-selling material.
...So here's the thing. I have no doubt that McDavid and Matthews will eventually hoist Cups in Edmonton and Toronto. But IMO, I wouldn't be surprised if Montreal doesn't win another Cup over the course of my lifetime, and they eventually call it the "Curse of Patrick Roy."

A smaller one from Cincinnati, The Curse of Bo Jackson.
In 1991, the Bengals defeated the Houston Oilers in the wild card round. The following week, they would match up against the Raiders. In that game, Bo Jackson would get injured on a tackle. The Raiders would win the game, but Bo's multisport career would never recover. Following the injury, the Bengals would begin struggling to win a playoff game. Including that Raiders game, the Bengals would lose 8 playoff games across a 31 year period including losing in 5 straight seasons from 2012 to 2016. What didn't help was the circumstances of a lot of these losses.
In 2006, Carson Palmer tore his ACL and MCL when tackled by Steelers defender Kimo von Oelhoffen on the first offensive play of the game. The Steelers would go on to win the Super Bowl.
In 2012, they would get blown out by a TJ Yates led Texans team. They would also lose to the Texans the following year.
In 2016, Andy Dalton would get injured weeks before the playoffs, but the wild card game was played well by AJ McCarron. With little time left with the lead, Vontez Burfict intercepted the Steelers' pass deep in Pittsburgh territory. It seemed the drought was over, but Jeremy Hill fumbled the ball on the very next play. The Steelers suddenly had life. Ben Roethlisberger drove down the field slowly when Burfict laid a helmet to helmet hit on Antonio Brown. Flags were thrown, and a scuffle began (including Steelers coach Joey Porter coming from across the field for some reason). In the scuffle, Pacman Jones pushed an official, tacking on enough penalty yards for the Steelers to easily take the lead with a field goal and end the game.
Finally in 2022, after a complete culture shift bringing in coach Zac Taylor, Joe Burrow, and other players not involved in 2015, the curse was finally lifted when the Bengals defeated the Raiders (fitting). For good measure, they also went to the Super Bowl.
It's safe to say the Curse of Bo Jackson is over, and any struggles the Bengals may face in the future are considered unrelated. The struggles of the Reds have been sometimes tied to this curse as well since Jackson also played baseball, but Bo's injury occurred a few years before the Reds' last playoff series win.

There's no bigger form of cope than believing in a curse. "M-muh team ain't winning because of muh curse! I-It's totally not cuz they suck and have incompetent management! It's the supernatural forces!"
Also, all these curses are just some dude saying "ur not gonna win lol" like if that's all it takes to curse a team, then literally _every single_ team/athlete from every sport in the entire world is "cursed".

The thing about curses is that it's such an American thing. In sports like football, teams that haven't won in ages are just shit but if it was in America they would be cursed. I think it's just a way of scapegoating the team from being bad

Philly had The Curse of Billy Penn for a while. This was because no building was supposed to be built taller than the William Penn statue on top of city hall. Liberty Place was the first building that was built higher than the statue which was built in 1984 a year after the Sixers won the NBA title. No Philadelphia team won another championship until the Phillies in 2008...technically I guess as the Philadelphia Stars won the USFL title in 1984 and the AHL's Philadelphia Phantoms won 2 Calder Cups not to mention Villanova winning the NCAA title in 1985.

There's not a name for it, but it's been said that the Vikings are cursed because their founder was originally supposed to be a member of the AFL when it was founded but jumped ship to the NFL as it was more lucrative than the start-up AFL, meaning his "betrayal" cursed the franchise before it even played a game.

I would say that the Seattle Mariners should be on list. Since they're currently the only MLB team that never made the World Series. Many fans blame the Trident logo that represent the letter M, cursed the team. According to the Greeks, pointing the trident down is consider bad luck.

Actually, Tom Brady lost the Superbowl the same year he was on the cover to the Eagles. The year that the Patriots won the Superbowl was the year prior when Rob Gronkowski was on the cover and he got a season ending injury. So the only one to win a Superbowl the same year after being put on the cover was Patrick Mahomes, surprisingly, earlier that year, he dislocated his knee but since he was double jointed, he came back three weeks later.

Haven’t watched the video but here’s one many of you probably haven’t heard of: the curse of Bo Jackson. Jackson suffered a career ending injury against the Bengals in a 1991 playoff game. The raiders went on to win that game. It would be 31 years before the bengals won a playoff game despite 8 tries, being favored in half of them.

Imagine if there was a fan base where it was possible to be over 100 years old, have a memory of the very first game your team ever played, from it's inception...
And still never have seen a championship.
I'd make an argument that this would be the ultimate curse. The curse of just simply existing. What if I told you that there was in fact a team to which this scenario applies?
The Philadelphia Phillies debuted on May 1, 1883. During the 20 years where winning the National League Pennant meant you were the champions of baseball, the Phillies never one. When the World Series started in 1903, the Phils proceeded to pass up any chance to beat the American League for the next 76 years. Finally, in 1980, after 77 years, of Series play, and 97 years in existence total, the Phillies finally won.
In theory, it was possible to walk down the street in Philadelphia in 1979, having been born in 1874, recall being at the park in May of 1883, and, at the age of 105, have no memory ever - Ever - of seeing a championship.
You know what's even more amazing? There's not a single reference to any curse whatsoever regarding the Phillies.
So much for curses. Curses are excuses made up by fans who simply can't handle that their team fell short, plain and simple. As a fan of the franchise with the most losses of any team on planet Earth (and I mean that 100% literally - regrettably), I've seen enough to know how it works.
