Watched all your tutorials. Went down the beach with 1 pillie yesterday and pulled my first one out on my 3rd try. Got 2 in 25 minutes before having to leave. Was extatic!
When I was a lad an old fisho at Normanville in South Australia taught us with red meat in a stocking and once you get them to bite on the stocking gently lift until you see the white solid muscle about 3 or 4cm from the head. Grab below that muscle and you will rarely ever break one off.👌
My late father use to catch beach worms professionally back in the day and sell to the tackle shops, when he and mum moved back to South Australia he would catch them off the beaches here for bait. They are called a bungum worm here. Not many know the skill but they are super bait for just about anything that swims. All the best.
Great video Roger. Been trying to catch these little buggers for 20yrs. I struggle with the grabbing of the worm, looking at your video I don't think I go deep enough in the sand. Can get fingers on them but as soon as I squeeze they scoot back down. Will keep practising!
I watched another fella catching them with pliers and he had a technique that seemed to work really well. Firstly he was just using regular needle point pliers without spikes. I imagine that once the spike has perforated the worm the strength is inherently reduced. More importantly though, was his technique. He'd grab them with the pliers and then grab the worm with the other hand in exactly the same way, but then rather than trying to forced them out he'd put a little tension on them and just hold it there rather than trying to pull it out. After 5-10 seconds or so the worm would gradually start coming out and then just let go and he could rip it out just as he would if he were using fingers.
Thanks Roger! I bought some pliers, had a few cracks and in every case cut the worms head off. After watching this video and a few of your other ones i managed to catch 2 worms with my fingers! Great resources thanks Roger. The cherry on top was catching a few Whiting and a flatty with my first ever worms!
I went down to the beach trying to catch worms for the first time and some random guy came down and showed me some tricks and i was catchin worms within half an hour too! Just gotta get out and give it a shot!!
It was awesome bumping into you on the beach this evening. We probably should have searched through your beach worming video's before we tried worming today. We'll try again tomorrow and see how we go!
When I was (much) younger, I used to catch them with the brass worm pliers. There was certainly an art as to how hard you could apply the pressure as decapitation was a frequent outcome. I saw someone on Brunswick Heads beach the other day using pliers with rubber sleeves over the ends. He didn’t seem to be taking the heads off, so that might be something to consider? Thanks for the videos Roger - always educational and entertaining.
Great video👍 I too use the pliers and have found when you grab the worm twist the pliers to 90 degrees which stops the worm from digging in and they release a lot easier. This way I've found it to be more successful without breaking the worm . I still can't master the finger method , once again great video keep it up.
I use pliers because the big worms up here on the central coast I can’t hold onto when they pull down. I actually know an ex pro wormer from Queensland who I took out and in 2hrs using his hands he didn’t get one big one so I figured I’ll stick to what works for me. A couple of things the old boys shared with me. First pull the spring out and throw it away, second cut the knob that the spring sat on out so the pliers can close hard without hitting those two knobs as you’ll need the extra force to pin the big ones. Third only use the pliers to pin them to stop the retreating the get your other hand and pin the worm as far down as you can between the index and forefinger like you would hold a cigarette, then once you have it with both hands start pulling in a steady consistent movement and if your on a big one it will be as thick as your pinky and about 4ft long 🤙 I’m more than happy to show you if you want to come up
Hi Brice, Thanks for your info. I know when catching really big beach worms with your fingers, it's a bit like weight lifting, you have to psych yourself and hold on really hard. I actually grip the big ones so tightly that I sometimes break their heads off with my fingers. When using my fingers I find it best to pull the worms out straight away before they get set. Would love to come up and join you sometime. Which beaches do you worm? My brother lives at Chitaway Point on the Central Coast. Roger
Hi Roger, I am going to have a go at catching beach worms today at Palm Beach, Sydney, this is a first for me and with all your advice and teaching I feel a little bit confident on catching a couple hopefully, I love watching your videos Thank you. Rob Abbott , Avalon Beach.
Hi Roger I've been worming for around two and a half months now using pliers started out with catching one or two i go down worming a couple of times each week practising but are now catching up to 30 each time I still miss quite a few but really enjoy the challenge thanks for your videos on hooks and baits I'll be employing some of your rigs this season for salmon and hopefully a flathead which are not a mainstay fish in SA ok tight lines and cheers for now.
Hi John, thanks for saying Hi. Great to hear about your worming success. All the best with your fishing. What's the worming like in S.A? What general area do you live? Roger
@@RogerOsborneFishing hi Roger i live at Clarence gdns, I go worming at Tennyson Beach but fish mainly over Yorke peninsular places like Ardrossan ,Black Point, pt Victoria and Moonta Bay the eastern side of York's has probably been the best over the years sometimes we might bag out but that is happening less and less due to netting, the yfw are pretty good most around 38 to 40cm with the odd larger one thrown in my best is 43cm weighing just over 1kg. At the moment I'm preparing to fish our northern beaches for yf and hopefully a flattie during the autumn that area is between Adelaide and pt waikfield at low tide the water goes out up to 3km with lots of shallow pools ,on a nice winters day you can catch king George with large salmon thrown in look forward to chatting with you again cheers. John.
Thanks for the videos Roger. I have gotten pretty good at worming since watching your other worming videos over and over! Plus lots of practice! I was keen to try the pliers, more before I got the knack of catching with my fingers. So ended up buying a pair when I was at Anaconda. Well, they are now going to be used as general fishing pliers! I found it so hard! I actually got the first worm I tried them on, almost chop his head off in the process! After that I was just cutting them all straight off! It got to the point where it was just cruel and I went back to my fingers and got heaps! I had a final go with the pliers before leaving, I managed 2.5! I think the trick is not snapping the pliers tight! But I'll stick to using my fingers after that! At least I'll have a nice pair of fishing pliers that won't rust!
@@RogerOsborneFishing On the Sunshine Coast. Buddina or Kawana Beach. So many worms here I no longer bother with the bait stocking, just another thing to take and clean up afterwards! A hand bait is all you need here! I had always wanted to learn how to catch them and lucky I had watched your video as I recognised them when fishing at Kawana in the surf, they were sticking their heads up all around my feet! I grabbed a prawn and had a go! Many tries and videos later I got it! I'm now self-sufficient for bait and don't buy anything, which is great as a stay at home dad, as I don't have much money, but heaps of time to catch my own (and fish) during the day when the kids are at school.
Finally found a beach that has worms. Got there just as tide was coming in. Made it hard to land them. Tomorrow I have a date with destiny to pull one out.
I catch sand crabs for my bate but I haven't try for worms because I look at V as you said in your last videos, but I haven't try with bait to chatch beach worm next time I will to see if I find some and thank you for your tips and I like the catch worms with fingers.
Nice video Roger. Speaking from my own experience, I agree with everthing you said in the video, and want to further add that pliers probably work better with large worms, especially those stumpies with green head. Because they are much sicker than the slimies, it's less easier to chop their heads off. And they are so strong, I have found it extremely difficult to pinch them by fingers without letting them slip through. By using the pliers, I can pinch them easily and use both hands to slowly pull them out like you did in the video. When it comes to catching slimies, I found it much easier with hand. They are nowhere near as strong as the stumpies, and I was able to apply your method pulling them out single handedly. So now I apply both methods according to the size of the worm. If it's a normal size worm, I don't hesitate to use my hand. If it's a big dog - usually pretty obvious from the look of its head, I will use the pliers. This approach has been working rather well foe me lately. Hope this presents another option for the viewers. 😊
I've been fishing for 60 years and never caught a beach worm. After watching this my chances have doubled thank you. Do all beaches have worms? Other than swirling a smelly fish bait around are there other signs?
Hi Jeff, the beaches on the eats coast of Australia have an abundance of worms bot I am not sure about the other states. Beach worms are blind and feed by scent so you need a nice smelly bit of meat or fish. Roger

Hi Simon, I keep my worms in a cool place in the house like the garage or laundry and off the ground. I haven't tried putting them in the fridge, my thoughts are that 4 degrees is a fair bit colder than the worms natural environment.
Hi Roger. When you put your fingers in the sand do you actually have a hold of the worm before you apply pressure to it? I have caught a couple of them but it's very hit and miss, well , more miss than hit haha.
Yeah there is a texture change between thumb and finger...feels creepy with its body on yout finger or thumb. If i dont feel the texture in a heavy wash i miss it, if you feel the worm grip it up. So fun

Modify the pliers
I use my finger to catch a worm, much easier that way.
Pliers don't pull heads off if you get the timing right.

I tried catching them with my fingers & actually got one but my reflexes got slower as the level in the bottle of rum got lower.🤣
Fingers
Aha don’t pull em straight up with pliers mate pull them out towards the bag
Hi Caidan, thanks for the feedback, you think pulling the worm sideways helps with pliers? Ok I'll test it next time I go worming, Roger.
Roger Osborne when you grab the worms and try and pull them straight up they lock there legs so if you pull them on an angle the com straight out, that’s the way I do it or I dig mine out
My kids catch worms at school
ha ha
If you grab them on the way up instead of down, you can rip their heads off either way. You just don't know how to catch worms
Your sand makes it extremely easy, give it a go in our sand it’s like concrete
Your sand is soft fingers are a goer, our sand is so compact that sinking down with fingers is extremely challenging
