"Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives… You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours… You, the mothers, who sent their sons from faraway countries, wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well." -Ataturk, 1934
Such waste of lives, Gallipoli. Dreams of freedom turned to dust. My favourite Sabaton song and your version is absolutely breath taking and beautiful. thank you ♡
Yeah, this song has always hit different, since when I was a kid back in the 90s, my great grandfather (RIP. 1899-1995) used to tell me stories about his experiences in WW1, and while he wasn’t at Gallipoli he knew people that were, and the sheer brutality of his recounting of the events his friends experienced always hit dif compared to his stories of him serving in the Western Front. Cliffs of Gallipoli made me cry the first time I heard it, and this managed to do that again, and I am not much of a crier usually.
Hear them whisper, Voices from the other side Hear them calling Former foes now friends are resting side by side They will never leave our hearts or fade away Live forever They were far to you to die in such a way how many wasted lives How many dreams did fade away Broken promises They won't be coming home Oh mothers wipe your tears Your sons will rest a million years Found their peace at last As foe turned to friend And forgive And they knew they'd die Gallipoli Left their letters in the sand Such waste of life Gallipoli Dreams of freedom turned to dust Hell is waiting where the ocean meets the sand Cliffs of burden Where the soldiers rushed into a certain death At the shoreline Blood of heroes stains the land Light a candle One for each of them who fought and died in vain There is no enemy There is no victory Only boys who lost their lives in the sand Young men were sacrificed Their names are carved in stone and kept alive And forever we will honour the memory of them And they knew they would die Gallipoli Left their letters in the sand Such waste of life Gallipoli Dreams of freedom turned to dust how many wasted lives How many dreams did fade away Broken promises They won't be coming home Oh mothers wipe your tears Your sons will rest a million years Found their peace at last As foe turned to friend And forgive And they knew they would die Gallipoli Left their letters in the sand Such waste of life Gallipoli Dreams of freedom turned to dust
This is awesome, I was just looking around the internet and when I got at your masterpiece, I just softly began to sing along. This is really good, please keep up the good work. Greetings from Flanders.
Now this warms my heart because many of my great grandfathers uncles and even his father went to gallipoli, but this is actually really good. Well i guess likes from Australia. Lest we forget
I rerurne to this one from year to year just to admire how beautifully you made this truly does more then justice, i realy like it more everytime i come back to listen to it.
Wow, absolutely incredible. I loved it, you performed it so perfectly. I am definitely subbing if the rest of your content is even half as good as this. This was just incredible. Do you have the sheet music for this by any chance? How I would love to learn to play this.
Vikram Shankar - Official (obelix5150) Ok, that's fine. It seems like most really good pianists (or anyone good with instruments) does it by ear. I guess i'll just have to try and figure it out myself.
Really great piece you've arranged here. I love the original song and the consequent emotion, and you've really captured it and presented it in a whole new, yet relateably way. Very much enjoyed this! Also just checked out Gravity and have bought your latest album. Keep going!
For reals mate this cover is 1000 times better than the original... and I really really love Sabaton and Cliffs Of Galipoli is my fav song :-) I think that you should record this professionally :D sounds legendary.
+Jasper Bohté Thank you! Unfortunately I don't have a good quality recorded version of this - this is pretty much as good as it gets. If you're interested in downloading this version you could just use one of those youtube video to mp3 sites, since I don't think i have a lossless or 320kbps version of this anymore.
+Lukáš Sajdl Hey man, I've done a couple other Nightwish and Sabaton songs which you can see on my channel. I would love to do more sometime if I had the time!
What do you call it when someone presses piano keys likw in the intro? I have seen that being done in a couple of other song and stuff and j dont know what thats called.

Sounds exactly like an old silent film's soundtrack the way you presented the song. A very sad scene it'd be.
That's exactly the mood I was trying to conjure, so thank you!

Live forever

How many dreams did fade away

Oh mothers wipe your tears
Your sons will rest a million years
Found their peace at last
As foe turned to friend
And forgive
And they knew they'd die
Gallipoli
Left their letters in the sand
Such waste of life
Gallipoli
Dreams of freedom turned to dust
Hell is waiting where the ocean meets the sand
Cliffs of burden
Where the soldiers rushed into a certain death
At the shoreline
Blood of heroes stains the land
Light a candle
One for each of them who fought and died in vain
There is no enemy
There is no victory
Only boys who lost their lives in the sand
Young men were sacrificed
Their names are carved in stone and kept alive
And forever we will honour the memory of them
And they knew they would die
Gallipoli
Left their letters in the sand
Such waste of life
Gallipoli
Dreams of freedom turned to dust
how many wasted lives
How many dreams did fade away
Broken promises
They won't be coming home

My God hearing it on guitar and piano are two different things, this sounds like a memorial service the guitar is like a forgotten farewell.
I might be 11 years late, but this almost makes cry, it's absolutely beautiful. Very good job
when you know the lyrics of the original and hear this
it would be ncice if there is this version with the band singing on it without guitar and drums
You mean an acoustic version
This is such a good rendition of the song, I think I like it more than the original. I love coming back to this from time to time.

Exactly and elegantly played. The velvety sound of your piano fits in this though the ambience isn't so tough than in original.
MetalPianist Definitely wasn't my intent to be as "tough" as the original - velvety elegance was what I was going for, so thank you!
I love this song a lot because of the piano in it. I had to search for piano only version and found this very video :D
