  • A few days ago, I finally received my copy of Sabaton's new live DVD, "Swedish Empire." I have been watching it nonstop since, to the point where I felt inspired to cover one of their songs. All their songs are epic as hell and worthy of covering, but I decided to tackle "The Cliffs of Gallipoli," from their album The Art of War. "Cliffs," aside from being a straight-up awesome epic metal song, is a favorite of mine because it pays homage to one of the bloodiest and most futile battles of the World Wars, the Gallipoli Campaign of World War I. Joakim's lyrics are awesome (and are some of his most emotional) and give me chills every time I listen to the song, so I decided to include them in the video as an overlay. Hope you guys enjoy my take of Sabaton's classic song!
    Lyrics:
Hear them whisper voices from the other side
    Hear them calling
Former foes now friends are resting side by side
They will never leave our hearts or fade away
    Live forever
They were far too young to die in such a way
How many wasted lives? How many dreams did fade away?
Broken promises, they won't be coming home
Oh mothers wipe your tears your sons will rest a million years
Found their peace at last as foe turn to friend and forgave
And they knew they would die...
    Gallipoli
Left their letters in the sand
    Such waste of life
    Gallipoli
Dreams of freedom turned to dust
Hell is waiting where the ocean meets the sand
    Cliffs of burden
Where the soldiers rushed into a certain death
At the shoreline blood of heroes stains the land
    Light a candle
One for each of them who fought and died in vain
There is no enemy, there is no victory
Only boys who lost their lives in the sand
Young men were sacrificed their names are carved in stone and kept alive
And forever we will honour the memory of them
And they knew they would die

About me: I'm a 19 year old guy (18 when this was recorded) who plays piano, guitar, drums, bass, tenor sax, french horn, and mandolin. I've been studying piano for 12 years, and I've been playing the others, self taught, for a few years. I mainly play metal (especially melodic and progressive stuff, but I'm into everything), jazz (modal jazz and fusion in particular), classical, classic rock, pop, and lots of other stuff. And listening wise, I'm all over the map... I honestly listen to and can appreciate everything out there.

"Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives…
You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours… You, the mothers, who sent their sons from faraway countries, wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well."
    -Ataturk, 1934

Sounds exactly like an old silent film's soundtrack the way you presented the song. A very sad scene it'd be.

Yeah, this song has always hit different, since when I was a kid back in the 90s, my great grandfather (RIP. 1899-1995) used to tell me stories about his experiences in WW1, and while he wasn’t at Gallipoli he knew people that were, and the sheer brutality of his recounting of the events his friends experienced always hit dif compared to his stories of him serving in the Western Front. Cliffs of Gallipoli made me cry the first time I heard it, and this managed to do that again, and I am not much of a crier usually.
