Great Deal or Overpriced Hype? - Carvera Air CNC

- Makera released their Carvera CNC a few years back, it's a great machine but also very pricey (5K+). They recently released the Carvera Air, a stripped down version of the bigger brother. Let's dive into it and see how it stacks up.

*Note: I was sent a prototype unit for review, this versions might be different than what you get at the end of the Kickstarter campaign if you choose to back it. As always, make sure to do your own research!

Makera has already said that prototype’s open loop stepper motor will be changed to closed loop (servos?) for the production model. They also said something about an upgrade to the door-cover though it is less clear what that is about.
you forgot to mention a quite nice feature of the enclosure : you can open rear to mill into long piece of wood for instances.
That is a very visually pleasing CNC! I especially like the full enclosure to keep everything clean and quieter (maybe) as you mill about. Great video as always Brandon!
Thank you for comparing to other CNC. Can't wait for Carvera
I like the probe leveling and PCB prototyping. So that build volume fits perfectly for my use case. Thought about the cheaper mills, but the tutorials online for those beasts make the level setup sound time consuming and unreliable.
Bantam Tools were not started by Bre Pettis, he bought "Other Machine Company" that made the "Othermill" and renamed it to "Bantam Tools" in 2017.
The Othermill was launched on Kickstarter back in 2013.
Yep, my mistake, thanks for clarifying!
I've backed this on KS mostly because it interests me. I've never done any CNC but have several 3D printers. I would note that the shipping costs seem to remove a lot of the benefits of KS. I think that's something you could mention. They're currently estimating $350. The Carvera has 'free' shipping on their website so the later price of the air may come with that also.
Ah, good point. Didn't even consider the shipping side on Kickstarter, vs the free shipping from Carvera. Great point!
Just remember that taxes and duties are included in that price. I’m pretty sure shipping was also charged for the original Carvera KS.
I'm curious how it compares to the Milo CNC or the upcoming ones from Voron & RatRig?
I'll have to check it out!
@@____________________ok why
@@____________________ok 🤣🤣🤣
@@____________________ok yes, Okuma and cncstep. Which brands you have? Does they also have FULL die cast frame?
Does the Kickstarter price really include the laser and/or rotary tool?
Nope, they are optional add'ons.
They are add on's, mean to mention that in the video but forgot to write it down.
Thanks, I figured those where extras since the package already was pretty cheap.
I'm definitely getting one with PCB and 4th axis add-ons. For the price, it will be good for me as a beginner.
Would have been interesting to compare it to the Nomad 3 from Carbide3d
I saw couple of comments mentioning $2k price, but I only could find a whopping 5,699 figure! Gee..
You make be looking at the more expensive model
@@makeorbreakshop Hmm, good point, thank you :) There was just one model at their website available.
It is overpriced for sure!
Am I the only one who finds it super annoying the way this guys talks. When......he......talks.....about......the......machine...........like........this........its.....hard...to....focus........on....what........hes.....saying....because....it.....sounds.....like......hes......having.....a..........seizure. If you could just speak at a normal pace that would be swell. I literally cant make it more than 5 minutes through your videos for how incredibly distracting and annoying it is.

Noticed nothing 😅 so not bothered
no one is going to miss you dude, not here or anywhere else......
Overpriced hype, Snapmaker is a better system
So, why is it better?
Two different machines, I won't suggest snapmaker for milling makera is more capable
Not really…If you want a 3d printer buy a 3d printer, if you want a laser engraver buy a laser engraver, if you want a desktop cnc well you get it…Usually multi systems in one machine doesn’t perform as well as a single use designed system. I doubt snap maker is as rigid for any kind of metal work as the carvera is.
You're messing something up. Snapmaker is overpriced. 😂 The Carvera Air Kickstarter price is very competitive and (like he says in the video) is not comparable to anything else! Not to mention enclosure, 4th axies, great starting guide, PCB milling and laser module. Snapmaker is not able to supply that under $2.000!
Respectfully, I disagree. Carvers Air is the more robust mill. To get the Snapmaker to similar features (enclosure, 4th axis, laser, many bits….) you will pay much more for the Snapmaker.
200w spindle, linear rods, etc.. stay away from this pice of trash, if you plan to acsually cut metal
This machine is for beginners or in house small projects, not for industrial shop work haha. Besides whats a better option for the price in this category then huh?
@chadlemay7105 for my small jobs I got my wm3020 then just added a makita router and bought the geminstu enclosure all that came to a lot less then the kickstarter price of this machine
If the spindle was better I would consider this but at 200w and a max of 13000 rpm jobs are just going to take to long
Shame because I do really like the look of it still at that price should be linear rails and a better spindle
What about the fast bit changing?@@k3rt1984
Why call something a piece of trash if its intended use case works? You make it sound like hobbyists should have a Haas or nothing at all. (Granted if you had said don’t push steel through it I would be on board, but again that doesn’t mean it’s trash)
