    I'm an American who visited the UK a year ago back in the summer. Instead of seeing all the touristy stuff (saw some) and buying tacky touristy stuff, I went to Argos and got me a cheap carp rod (had my own reel and some terminal tackle in my bag). Made a trip to woody's of wembley for frozen peeler, black lug, and some terminal stuff. Went to Morrison's for prawn and yummy breakfast. Took the tube station to Woolwich past the tidal barrier. Managed a 5 lb bass on a peeler chunk plus some small flounders and tangly eel. Best trip ever .

    Hello mate. After seeing your recent Axmouth vid (my local venue) and subbing i'm thrilled to find this vid of my fave pier! My grandparents lived in Pevensey and i fished the pier throughout my teens. I caught my first ever sea fish there in what must have been 1980/81 - a tiny red gurnard!
    Please do another video from the pier when possible. I was under the impression that fishing from the lower levels was stopped years ago and then that fishing was totally banned. Im more than happy to see that i was wrong!

    Some nice fish, never saw the point of taking lungs out of peeler crab. Fish would never have seen a natural peeler without lungs. Here is to a swift end to the fishing ban, it’s just starting here in Oz.

    Later in the day, Jack & Mary, a couple of old age pensioners are sitting at that table having an afternoon picnic. Mary gets some sandwiches out and puts them on the table. Jack says to Mary "why does my cheese sandwich taste of fish, Mary?"
    Anyway, fabulous video, excellent fishing, way better than down here in Brixham. If you want to catch decent plaice down here then you got to go down Beesands. No good if you're like me and use a wheelchair. That's the only problem with Brixham, absolutely useless sea fishing for anybody in a wheelchair. I used to love sea fishing back in the 80s before my accident. I still love fishing now but I only go carp fishing. I do go down to the river Dart but you only catch tiny little bass and maybe a small flounder if you are lucky.

    • @SaltwaterAngler
      @SaltwaterAngler  4 роки тому

      Be good if Brixham breakwater had better access for you. How about the teign, good for flounder and easier to fish?

    • @PennG0VQY
      @PennG0VQY 4 роки тому +1

      @@SaltwaterAngler Yeah, I used to fish down the River Teign way back in the early to mid-1980s. Mind you; I think I was going at the wrong time of year for flounder, which probably accounts for why I never caught one. I've only fished down there once while being in a wheelchair. We went down to the pier next to the Ship Inn to try and catch some bass. However, I understand they have now stopped people fishing from that location. It's difficult; there are many places down there that are wheelchair accessible. Poly steps are supposed to be quite good, but I have not tried there yet. Mind you; it's quite a long drive from Brixham, so it's not somewhere I would go regularly. Brixham Breakwater isn't too bad as long as you fish a high tide so that you're not continually getting snagged on the rocks. Also, I can only fish the inside of the breakwater.
      Goodrington promenade is pretty wheelchair accessible; however, you are never going to break any records down there. You may catch the mackerel and garfish during the summer, maybe a bass or a mullet if you try hard. The best time is during the winter when you get loads of small whiting, pouting, and dogfish. However, my days of fishing in the cold weather are long over.
      The best place for wheelchairs is the River Dart. It's safe so you're never going to end up going for a swim in your wheelchair and the fishing isn't too bad. I haven't tried for the flounder, but I intend to some stage. People have caught larger bass than I have so I think you have just got to persevere.
      Anyway, I hope you don't get too bored sitting at home. Once this nightmare is all over, I think we will all be out there fishing.
      TIGHT LINES :-)

    probably a silly question , but why bother deshelling /legging the peeler when bass eat them whole naturally ,the amount of scent would be negligible in that calm sea ?

    • @SaltwaterAngler
      @SaltwaterAngler  3 роки тому

      Good question Keith, I mix up how I do this sometimes leaving bits on and with some without I like a bait that leaves a nice part of the gape and hook showing.

    • @KEITHPARRIS2949
      @KEITHPARRIS2949 3 роки тому

      @@SaltwaterAngler I wondered because we always used whole crab either peeler (if in season)or hardbacks whole with the hook just whipped on with elastic on the underside bathed in place by whipping the legs in one bundle above the hook eye , thus ensuring the crab stayed in the correct orientation for the hook point to be fully exposed and with plenty of gape available for decent hook properties . works well for hermit crabs too as they are a superb bait for bass close inshore .we also used to use a method of casting out a lead with no trace attached wait for it to settle then clip on a trace with either a live or dead fish bait on it and let it slide down to the leader know giving lovely presentation at different levels , very effective technique .

    Nice one Matt. I remember landing a 11.7lb bass for a guy, by drop net at the end of that pier, in a storm many years ago. There is a culmination of reasons for the fishing having deteriorated over the last 50 years - climate change, overfishing, joining the EU in 72 unfortunately allowed a ‘free for all’ for the commercials. I thought we would be rid of this when I voted for Brexit, but
    Brussels bullied Boris into a corner and he went back on his promises. Sadly Europe have another 5 years to rape and plunder our waters. We shall see what’s left for us anglers after...
