Cool build dude! Lots of money and time spent not only building it but having your pops involved makes it even a better build!! New Mexico yfz450r, Raptor 700r rider!!
I have an 88 Tecate 4. 87’s were only green. In 1988 there produced green and white. Not many white ones were made. Their considered a unicorn really. Looking at his pics his was an 87. A lot more 87’s were produced than 88. The 87 had straight a-arms from the frame to the spindles, 88 had a slight bend in them. The 88 also had rear shock reservoir mounted to subframe. 87 resi was mounted up near the cylinder. The pipe is for an kx250 dirt bike. With slight modifications you can use a KX cylinder which is a simpler set up because the Tecate 4 actually had power valves. If your ever interested in Tecate 4 reach out to ILR performance, guys name is Dave roberts. He’s considered to be a Dave moore type guy to the Tecate 4 world. Also you can got to Off road Innovations website, he caries a lot of parts as well. Very cool piece
Baddest 250 motor, one of the greatest handling rollers, and the best parts. Love it and the color scheme. I'd just tell people it's an 06 tecate and chuckle.
Only thing I would’ve done differently if I were building it, is make custom decals for it that say ‘Tecator’ or something like that with the vintage look that the Tecate decals have but with some modern touches.
So much respect to commit to such a rare engine. I have a 95 yz250 engine one a first gen Raptor chassis and it's impossible to find some oem yz parts.
Love the hybrid but if I had the whole Tecate I wouldn't have used the engine. Those things are hard come by And worth some💰💲🤑💵💵💸 because of it. Great vid
We said the same thing back in 1989 after Honda dropped out, Kawasaki was long gone, and Yamaha never brought anything to the table (as far as racing goes). Suzuki was the only ones left producing race worthy quads. Then in 92', they quit too. That's basically when I quit racing professionally. If there were no factories in it, why even hope to get a factory ride. Plus I was getting older.
@@MichaelSabo that makes sense, id like to see if one would fit without the pipe and go from there, id like to experiment with building a 2 into 1 with a bigger expansion chamber on a banshee and see what it do, i do love the symetry of a banshee though they make my thumb sore!
If you put a kx500 motor in a tecate 4 it will eventually start breaking the frame from the vibration. It can be installed in a t3 because the forks absorb the vibration like a dirt bike. The motors can be balanced but its gonna cost way more than its worth. I started a t4 build and planned a 500 motor but I had alot of tecate enthusiast tell me about guys trying it and not working.
@@wxdad6256 Thanks, i hadnt yet heard that but was planning on doing gusseting on anything i build but dont have a welder and other things so for now im limited to refurbishing and rebuilding or replace, not much customization coming out of my garage yet but knowing things like the vibration problem beforehand can make all the difference sometimes. Maybe some level of smoothing could be achieved with piston and or bore changes, too bad they werent twin 250cylinders.. Also i just thought of it but a person may be able to mount in such a way that allows some vertical movement yet isolate the fore and aft movement. Hard poly bushing maybe on the forward mounts maybe? So much is possible but its hard to decide whats really worth the time and effort, thank for the info by the way!
@@racerx9223 The guy I talked to tried gusseting the frame and it still broke. He ended up scrapping the frame and went back to a bored out 250 motor. I lost the pictures I had of it all or I would have shared them with you. I do remember the exhaust was cut and rewelded in 2 places to make it fit. Also for some reason I believe the bottom of the fuel tank was heated up and reshaped but I may have that mistaken from another project.
Hi Mike! The Tecate came at first as a 3 wheeler. At mid 80s 3 wheelers were banned for being dangerous, so it came as a 4 wheeler for a couple of years. Also the flywheel magnets issue was quite common on Tecates.Compared to Yamaha Tri-Z 250 and Honda Atc 250 it was slightly faster. Interesting swap thoug!
Idk if I'm die hard Yamaha but definitely favor the yfzs, this is a badass build!!!! Love the green and blue and the stickers! Looks like a fun ripper for sure!!!🤘🤘🤘🤘
I don’t know if it’s true or not for the tecate 4, but the 3 in like 84/85 the motors vibrated like crazy, that’s why the Honda’s were always wanted, they had a balance shaft that smoothed them out, but that guys build is gorgeous! Great work and color combo was absolutely on point! Great video
I've heard about the vibrations from the early kawi motors that's definitely a thing; it's similar with any 2 stroke that doesn't have a counter balancer
I've raced a Tecate4 and its quick but the bumpsteer was hardcore!!! Always went where i pointed it though with a fantastic motor. I'm collecting parts at the moment for a hybrid. 05' TRX450R chassis with a ported Tecate4 motor and long travel dc4 lonestar arms, +1 swinging arm and PEPS all round... should be fun.
Very cool build! I should send ya the black quad build i did last year! New ones in the works basically same quad but blued out! Pretty much just waiting on graffix and wheels and my seat cover!
That is awesome. I'm a big fan of 2strokes, even tho the modern 4strokes run good. Always loved that 2stroke sound, mix fuel smell and powerband. Would love to put a 250 or 500 bike motor in a 4wheeler, I know there not balanced but good motor mounts can help some.
The difference between the 1987 T4 and 1988 T4 is the 87 was only available in green and the rear shock reservoir is located next to the motor and on the left side. The 88 has the shock reservoir next to the rear shock, and was available in white, but only about 500 were white, out of the 2000 ish total in 88 and about 3000 total in 87, meaning only about 5000 were made in the short production run.
Very interesting build indeed. I've always thought it would cool to take an old square body Chevy pickup and stuff an older Ferrari engine in it that still used carbs instead of fuel injection. But I don't have the kind of scratch for a build like that. Just finding a good square body that's not a rust pile is pricey on its' own. As for a Kawi build, you could always search for a Mojave 250 instead, it's not as impressive as a 250 2-stroke but they're easier to find and were built for several years. I think they were made from 1987 up until 2004. I've found a couple at random times on the FB Marketplace. Never seen any Tecate's for sale though. Besides not having the pop-up light and being 4-stroke the Mojave almost looks similar in design to a Tecate-4. :)
Dude can you imagine the heads you would turn in the Chevy when people hear that old school Ferrari engine rev up? And yea man, you see Mojave's all over and for cheap too; would be cool to put a 2 smoke in one of those as a build!
@@MichaelSabo Definitely, the high-rev scream of an old Ferrari coming from an old Chevy pickup would really make people look and do a double take. Being different is always pricey, that's why not many do it. It's just cheaper to play with an LS. I think a cheaper alternative was a v8 from a Merc AMG car but even those are still pricey. As for other quad builds, I found an old video on you tube a while back of a guy who stuffed a YZ 490 engine into a Blaster frame. Pretty much similar in design besides having a lot more cc's. :)

Damn I love this build but the craptor chassis is a top heavy unit would have been so sick in a built kfx400 or Yfz450 not hating one bit sick unit for sure
I am a really big fan of hybrid bikes my brother had a blaster with a yz85 in it for 90 open class later down the road I got a walsh 250r frame with a yfz450 motor crammed in it loved it best handling bike I have ever been on but would like to make my own frame going off of the walsh 250r geometry but with ds450 suspension geometry but with the front shock lil more leaned in and with white 400x plastic and a Husqvarna 300 motor and Graphics to make look like a production Husqvarna atv
The illuminated spinning case fans are an unnecessary distraction which don't belong in the frame, and are probably confusing your camera's light metering system. Other than that, entertaining video as usual.

I'm no Micheal Sabo, but if you want to put $4500 on a $5000 quad that's basically brand new, maybe you got the wrong quad. With that being said, other than selling and buying something that suits you a little better and you don't feel like you need to drop a ton of cash on, just get a little bit at a time. Put a little bit to the side of every paycheck and start crossing them off 1 by 1. Completely changing a quad all at once is cool and makes for an interesting video, but it's also the difference between $4500 right now or $200-300 here and there. Hope this helps.
I agree with Earl man; that's good advice, especially if the quad runs fine now considering it's almost brand new. If that's your first quad, you may be better off ripping it and getting into the sport and then selling it to buy a larger quad that has a bit more potential to be modded the way you like! If you're hot on mods, a slip on and filter will sound good and make it more fun to ride and then I'd say suspension. There are a million ways to go but that's just my .02 🤘
