Congrats on v0.1! You've now got me thinking about save systems, localization, and a debug tool, all things that are probably too far on the back burner right now. Thanks as always for the motivation, another great episode!
I love the mix of coding and casual everyday stuff you do in your life. It's all really relaxing. The walks work great as breaks inbetween content and the music is so nice and calming. I really love your videos. They help me calm down when needed.
Awesome devlog! Always great to see one from you. I really like the little scene you show in Blender at the end of the video. The shadows and slightly more vibrant colors take the world's visuals to a whole new level.
For anyone wondering why he has been inactive for so long, he made a tweet 2 days ago saying he was struggling with health issues and will be having an operation next week. But after that hes gonna get back to making devlogs!
Been here for a few years (The day and night cycle in Equilinox to be exact). Your content is really relaxing. The chill music and low-poly graphics, the nice voice, explaining everything in a simple way brings the whole video to a new level. Keep on going, you are the best!
Hope you're well! Miss your dev vlogs, bud. If you've moved on to other projects or whatever it is, I'm certain a lot of people would love any content coming from you, whenever you do decide to return to the 'spotlight'. :) You're an inspiration to countless indie devs!
Nice seeing you back. The art style at the end is excellent, I just think that the super low-poly cars look weird around the pretty detailed houses. And if you do decide to detail them more, create a couple of car models. A verity of cars on the roads could probably make the city feel more alive.
The house designs are beautiful! And the sidewalks and lawns make it everything feel great; I don't even see a grid pattern, it's just pretty. Looking great. The shadows in Bender added a lot to the overall visuals too. I haven't checked checked out the Trello, but shadows look like a winner if they aren't on the board yet. Good job bb!
Thank you! I definitely have many more lighting and shading improvements planned for the game - I haven't really done much work on that side of things for this game yet.
@@ThinMatrix The shadow work in the Blender render was very nice looking, but I don't know if you should include that into the game. It gave it a more realistic aesthetic, and I quite liked it.

I do agree, I will need to find a balance between variety and consistency when it comes to the colours. I definitely don't want everything to look exactly the same!
@@ThinMatrix Would it be possible to allow the colour to vary slightly with each selection? So like you have the RGB values defined by the palette but then allow a certain amount of random variation to those values...

Great devlog, awesome progress. Funny side note, at 11:10, you should definitely collect those rose fruits/seeds, dry them and they make a delicious tea. Might be my favourite one, really recommend it.
Hey Karl, I really enjoyed this one. I think it's nice every rooftop is slightly different in color. Maybe you could start from the color palette and then make the rgb values go up or down slightly so they don't all look the same. Also looking forward to the new music and hope it is as relaxing as the last music in Equilinox from Jamal Green. I think multiplayer could make this game from awesome to super duper!! Grtz

Great Vid as Always! Quick Question: Why did you use a full-fledged shader for the selection square instead of a moving texture? I would personally do the same thing in the name of perfectionism and elegance but do you really think it would affect the performance?
Well I was already doing the square in the shader before that anyway, and honestly I thought it would be fun to try and make a different shape with shader code :P I don't think it'll noticeably affect the performance but I may actually change to a texture at some point anyway; that would probably be more flexible in terms of adding animations and effects to it, which I may need at some point.
@@ThinMatrix I wouldn't worry about performance here really. It's such a small and simple shape, for some people's rigs it might not be too far from the performance impact sending a texture (that is high-definition enough so you never see pixels, even if very close) over to the GPU might have

You deserve much more credit and many more subscribers and viewers. I'm a big fan and I always watch your videos when I'm running low on motivation for my game. Keep it up!
I love how much the light does in your final blender scene. This made me think, that it´d be awesome to see lightning within your game! :) And also loved everything in that scene. Bye. :)
Wow! 0.1 incredible work. Thanks for all the great vids you're a big inspiration to me I love how organized you are and aspire to be as well, because of you
Congrats on the progress. Always happy to see new updates. It would be interesting to see if it can be implemented to have a couple of architecture styles for your city, which you could pick when you start a new game. Not sure if this is how it works but load different models for the chosen type. As well as some styles can have some unique buildings as well. For help in creating models you can always get a community to help out. 😀
The most striking difference between your gameplay and the blender reference was the hard shadows which really made everything pop. Please consider adding a light and shadow casting system!
Love the brighter colours, I think something that is missing is a touch of blue, either some sky or maybe a body of water, a nice calm blue really goes a long way to liven up a scene. Would love to see some softer lighting and ambient light as well, love your videos ❤️
Houses in the same area tend to have been built around the same time, by the same builders with the same materials. You could use some noise to tint colours of rooves and walls slightly in different areas of the city to give this effect. Would add some nice variation.
I really love to see the progress! An idea that popped up in me (which is probably a lot of work) is to have different styles you can use (maybe you select one at the start of a save). Because I would really love to see a city with buildings that look like Amsterdam, but totally dont want to miss out on the English buildings. Maybe this feature could also add to the replayability :) Anyways it already looks amazing and Im looking forward to the next video :D
I have been thinking about different ways to consolidate my colors to be the same as well. The palette implementation is definitely the best approach I've seen!
That scene you showed near the end and which is also this video's thumbnail looks really good! Maybe you could look at the art style of Link's Awakening as it kinda reminded me of that. It looks really cute and toy-like, perhaps you like it :) By the way I found the new selection square rather hard to see, especially when it was red.
I think you should add more procedural aspects to the game. So the color palette can be referenced from code, and buildings cloud be built up of modules that is generated when a building is placed. User could then scroll though variations before they place a house or road. Also the lighting in blender was great, next maybe you could add a better sky shader in game to further experiment with the artstyle. Drawing concept art also helps. FYI I've been watching this channel for over a year, such great content.
Honestly as a developer myself, it appears you have such discipline when it comes to taking breaks and getting things done. You make yourself wonderful meals, take midday exercise breaks, and have amazing organizational skills. Would you care to comment on strategies you use to actually do these things? Do you have a timer that goes off to remind you of things? Is a relaxing work atmosphere really important? I'd love to understand. I find it difficult to pull myself away from developing when I need too and mostly end up making a quick bowl of ramen or watching some youtube to take breaks.
I think a bit of variation for the colours of the roofs / walls of the houses is a good thing it'll add a bit of visual interest to a town as a whole and stop it all looking a bit like a uniform dystopia, you could always have a set palatte but then have a slight random variation for each individual building
Love the artstyle and the soft chill style of your devlogs. Be great if you can mimic the shadows and the subtle reflection that you hade in blender. And if I can dream, some gi would be awesome.

You deserve much more credit and many more subscribers and viewers. I'm a big fan and I always watch your videos when I'm running low on motivation for my game. Keep it up!
I love how much the light does in your final blender scene. This made me think, that it´d be awesome to see lightning within your game! :)
And also loved everything in that scene.
Bye. :)
I think the example at the end of the art style absolutely nails it! Fantastic!
Happy to see your vids back, congrats for the v0.1!!!
It's always good vibes when u upload a new devlog! Keep it going, and good luck with the v0.2
Happy to hear from you again :)
I really like the lightning in the demo art style you were showing. Nice work dude!
I love the more vibrant and saturated colors
I really liked the look of what you showed us at 10:00 - Looking forward to a first release of the game!!
Wow! 0.1 incredible work. Thanks for all the great vids you're a big inspiration to me I love how organized you are and aspire to be as well, because of you
great to see your video again I missed your devlogs. So relaxing and it's always amazing to see you work.
Thank you for another great update! The style you ended up with looks appealing and self-consistent.
The most striking difference between your gameplay and the blender reference was the hard shadows which really made everything pop. Please consider adding a light and shadow casting system!
Great work! That style you made in blender looks really good, some particles for the cars and house chimneys and that style is brought to life!
I Enjoyed the devlogs, The mix of Game dev and daily tasks is very relaxing.
The best of luck my friend. Your project is looking amazing!
It will look amazing with that shadows!
I really love to see the progress!
An idea that popped up in me (which is probably a lot of work) is to have different styles you can use (maybe you select one at the start of a save).
Because I would really love to see a city with buildings that look like Amsterdam, but totally dont want to miss out on the English buildings.
Maybe this feature could also add to the replayability :)
Anyways it already looks amazing and Im looking forward to the next video :D
I have been thinking about different ways to consolidate my colors to be the same as well. The palette implementation is definitely the best approach I've seen!
Great video, I really like the art style
Not only the game is a piece of art, I also like style of the video, with the impressions from your day!
That scene you showed near the end and which is also this video's thumbnail looks really good! Maybe you could look at the art style of Link's Awakening as it kinda reminded me of that. It looks really cute and toy-like, perhaps you like it :)
By the way I found the new selection square rather hard to see, especially when it was red.
