5 Minute Fix: Filling gas mags and making sure to bleed them

  • Dont be shocked, bleed is not a super crazy term, and I still see this is an issue with newer players when they go to fill a green gas mag and only get a couple of shots out of the mag. Hoping this helps with you and keep an eye out with other players and offer a helping hand.

Awesome to see someone with some amount of influence spreading this kind of knowledge to the community, however I have some contentions and extra notes regarding the bleeding method:
Following the method of only adding a TINY amount of propellant gas to the mag as shown, the mag should then be held upside-down when the release valve is opened since the propellant gasses are lighter (less dense) than atmospheric gasses and so they will rise to the top of their container. Holding the mag upside-down while doing this allows the propellant to push out an actual meaningful amount of atmospheric gas, but you also need to be sure not to leave the valve open for so long that it allows atmospheric air back in. Gas of any kind wants to equalize pressure within its container, so when you open the release valve, the container is now the entirety of Earth's atmosphere. It should really only be a very quick tap of the release valve to bleed. In fact, it would probably be better just to tell people to do a quick shot of gas into the mag, put the mag in the gun, hold it upside-down, and take a single shot, then fill with propellant, and then tell them not to ever let the mag run completely out of propellant if they want to avoid doing this every time they use their mags.
It's kind of opposite to the understanding of bleeding a car's brake lines. You bleed those lines to get gas (air) out and the valves are placed at the top of the system. Air is less dense than liquids (brake fluid), so the air comes out at the valves more easily than the liquid. In our case with gas airsoft mags, we want the denser stuff out, so the valve needs to be on the bottom of the system and closed off before the propellant gas escapes completely.

ok got a question though... im not arguing because I don't really know what I'm talking about but isn't it liquid inside your mag ergo you want to leave it right side up?

Ive had a pistol mag that just would not fill with gas, it was driving me insane, I knew the filler valve was fine... I did this bleeding thing and hey presto it now works... Call me dumb but I never knew that regular atmospheric gas was stopping the propane from entering.
    👍✌️

Howdy. I have three TM PX4 gbb mags and they always seem to spit or give off some gas when I fill them unlike my son’s Glock mags which are super quiet when those are filled. I ordered some mag fill valve o-rings and placed them into the fill valve slots on the TM mags. The outcome of this provided a nice and quiet fill however, when I went to shoot the pistol it was evident that the mag did not fully pressurize due to only getting 7-9 shots total before the mag was depleted of gas. I then removed the new o-ring that I had just installed and checked to see if maybe if maybe I had put the new o-ring on top of the original o-ring. To my surprise, it seems as though they don’t have an o-ring in them at all when brand new. Nevertheless, I now went ahead and filled the mag with what appears to be no o-ring at all. This time, as I said before, the filling process seemed noisy and somewhat wasteful again, but when I shot that mag I got about 35-40 shots from the charge. Thoughts?

I think TM mags have a bleed system that automatically does the process this video describes. Just use the original fill valves and dont worry about this hiss. When you see a little smoke coming out, the mag is full.

I'm not against purging atmospheric gas but the second part regarding which can to fill from is not how it works. The liquid propellant is responsible for the pressure and at the same temperature, both will have the same pressure so long as they still contain liquid.
For the same reason, as long as you don't fire too quickly and bring down the temperature of the magazine, fps can stay consistent shot to shot as the pressure is consistent.

Why would anyone fill up his mag with two different canisters? Lol that’s a very weird way of doing.
It seems pretty normal to use one canister until it’s empty. You don’t open a second lemon marmelade can before the first’s over do you?

I hold the mag upside down with my pinky on the valve. I hold the valve open and begin to push gas into the mag. After a quick burst of the gas out of the mag, I release the valve and continue to fill. Seems to work well.

That seems like a good idea and it’s the same principle when filling propane tanks but we loosen the screw until air is purged and propane spots out then we close it. I need to try this because I have a Glock 18c and the mag lasts a little bit but I think I’m not filling it enough.

Why is it that I only get 6-15 shots before it runs out? I know damn well it shouldn’t wear out that fast. All parts are fine. Has to be mag, I’m just so confused
