I don't think we will ever again, have anyone like Ronnie Drew. He was a one off. His songs are badly needed these days. This is the earliest film that I have seen of him. His voice had such a hard texture, in the 60's, and early 70's.
I AGREE! And this comment was posted 8 years ago! Everything's completely broken now. Dubliners music is the only thing keeping me sane the past few months now.
Ronnie and I had a bit in common, due to our background in flamenco guitar. When Ronnie graduated from college he went to Spain to teach English, and while there he studied flamenco guitar. For many years he used his flamenco blanca guitar to perform and record. He was a good friend and I miss him and the other boys.
I looked up a picture of him with no hair or beard and i'm not a shamed to say i cried. When i think of Ireland it's his voice that comes into my head.Him singing Donegal Danny brings back memories of men we also have lost at sea here in Norway.
The anthem of theNavvies who built Britain and a good part of the U.S.A. It reminds me of my still loved and missed "Gramps" who after 20 years of graft for Wimpey, was rewarded by a fall from a cheapest tender, piss poor job of a Scaffold which gave way and crippled him,He died 18 mths later and it took a further 3 years before my Nan saw a penny from good old George. My gramps never expected anything but his wage, and a glass or two after work, and never bitched about his fate once! R.I.P. Gramps!
RIP Ronnie, you were a true ledgend..he managed to make every song he sung his own eg-McAlpines Fusiliers and Finnegans wake etc..I will really miss him a true irish hero!!
I always thought Thin Lizzy got the idea for their dual guitar sound from steely Dan’s Reelin in the years, but now I know they got it from much closer to home - John Sheahan and Ciaran Bourke’s mesmerising dual tin whistle sound!
DAMMIT !! I can't get enough of this incredible piece of solid gold! The youth of them and the utter foundation of rock solid talent seen just in this one 2:21 work. Where is my time machine? Set a course for 1963 and this very day and place, to re-live it all again....!
Gone ya boy ya Ronnie.See ye up there. I am a McAlpine's fusilier.I remember the day a piper played this as we got off the boat at Ardyne point,Dunoon(oil-rig site) with about 1000 Irish men marching behind the piper who was a Donegal man like myself.
My grand dad and dad used to play all the irish songs now seen as a history lesson but then in the 60s it was then Irish men did work hard and drank hard and perhaps never got old as a result of this great men
As a American with Irish roots this music just makes me wish I could leave it all behind and return home. If you want to experience the influence of the amazing Irish melodies just listen to some southern bluegrass. It hurts me so the strife the Irish have had to overcome. God bless em! I know I do.
RIP Ronnie and lukeandbobby what a outfit real musicians real songs ,amazing talent amazing voice, the good old days in our beautiful little country before it was spoiled forever by greed and foreigh influances
Ronnie could also sing in Spanish and did so in a unique and wonderful way, and recorded at least one song in Spanish from Chile that I know of, and that was "Yo Vendo Unos Ojos Negros". My joke for many years has been if you are in an Irish Pub, and there is a Spaniard next to you who speaks English with a Dublin accent, then you know that he was a student of Ronnies! :)
Nobody sings this song better than Ronnie Drew- suits his gravelly voice.. Personally this is the song I associate with him more than anyone else- like Luke Kelly Raglan road and Paddy Reilly - Fields of Athenry, Finbar Furey- Green Fields of France.
I was looking at Yahoo Answers Tonight and the topic came up about Ronnie Drew being Dead.I was looking at Reeling in the Years on RTE the Other Day set in 1965 and the Dubliners was Singing Seven Drunken Nights and on another Day it was Mc Alpines Fusiliers. I was thinking of buying their CD in Tesco.s Tonight as their Songs are Handy for Practicing on my Accordian. I am very Sorry to Hear the News of Ronnies Death. My Extreme Condolences to His Family.
I've worked with the Irish all over the world, great crack, great stamina, some of them are really clever, steel fixing, shuttering, concreting, no problem, seen many of them turn up on Saturday morning shift, straight from the night club in a suit and shirt, sound familiar? Also had my breakfast cooked on a shovel, no joke.
On both videos you'll see Bobby Lynch a forgotten member of the Dubliners in the early days, in "The Leaving of Liverpool he's singing together with Ronnie.
@dannylavery Lord, dint now so many weregone,,,inc Ronnie & Luke....sooooo sad, but i remember some critic writing that Ronnie had a voice like coke being crushed unde a door.....kinda liked that , i bet he would too, God bless him...TG for U Tube, keepin it alive..
More than likely they were already the Dubliners and not the "Ronnie Drew Group" by this point. This is a rare lineup of the group where Luke Kelly briefly left to study folk songs with Ewan MacColl and John Sheehan and Bobby Lynch joined. Lynch stayed a year and Sheehan never left.
+psychedelicpucho As john stated in an interview. He came in as a substitute and he still where because he was never asked if he could join the group permanently :-)
This is amazing! Great find. I can definitely see Ciaran and Barney, and the other whistle player looks like John, but who is that second guitarist off to the left?

You should check out the 'kings of connaught' singing this song, they really do Ronnie and Luke proud I think
AN AWESOME VID AND RONNIE HAS AN AWESOME VOICE
Ronnie was special, even Luke Kelly was second best. Incredible singer
I AGREE! And this comment was posted 8 years ago! Everything's completely broken now. Dubliners music is the only thing keeping me sane the past few months now.
He has a voice like coal being drug across the floor… that’s the best I’ve ever heard it described
R.I.P. Ronnie, my dad was a grafter for the fusiliers. And I am so proud to be London Irish.
Peace n love for everyone

When Ronnie graduated from college he went to Spain to teach English, and while there he studied flamenco guitar. For many years he used his flamenco blanca guitar to perform and record. He was a good friend and I miss him and the other boys.
Bob Lynch was also a fantastic guitar player, both flamenco and classical,I took lessons from him about 1973/4 at a guess.
Ronnie Drew is a legend that will never be forgotten. The true king of Ireland.
You will never hear a voice like that again. up the Dubs Dubs and Ronnie.
I looked up a picture of him with no hair or beard and i'm not a shamed to say i cried.
When i think of Ireland it's his voice that comes into my head.Him singing Donegal Danny brings back memories of men we also have lost at sea here in Norway.
what a voice
can't beat it
luke kelly and ronnie are dead on a par
fantastic singers, will always be missed

+irishelk NO WORDS BETTER SPOKEN
RIP Ronnie, you were a true ledgend..he managed to make every song he sung his own eg-McAlpines Fusiliers and Finnegans wake etc..I will really miss him a true irish hero!!
A fine singer from a strong bloodline.
I watch this video almost everyday....God bless Ronnie and the lads, I love them.
Regards from Spain
I always thought Thin Lizzy got the idea for their dual guitar sound from steely Dan’s Reelin in the years, but now I know they got it from much closer to home - John Sheahan and Ciaran Bourke’s mesmerising dual tin whistle sound!
Ronnie❤ 🎉😊 his majestic voice mellowed and changed as he got older. And had a range within his singing.
Unforgetttable Ronnie 's times singing!!!!
DAMMIT !! I can't get enough of this incredible piece of solid gold!

he had such a rich voice, hard to describe but just as hard to stop listening to
James Ferris but it got much better with age, and alas, with illness
Without doubt the most unique and brilliant voice that ever existed.
29-year-old Ronnie Drew, amazing
My grand dad and dad used to play all the irish songs now seen as a history lesson but then in the 60s it was then Irish men did work hard and drank hard and perhaps never got old as a result of this great men

Usually I'm watching "newer" videos of the Dubs, so it's amazing to see such an old one here. Thanks for the great upload!
I think the poorer sound quality due to the age of this video really adds something special to the song
This is rare and old, Ronnie kills it
In memory of my dad. x
This is glorious. Thank you.
Ronnie Drew❤🎉😊 amazing voice,good range,mellows as he gets older .R I P big man
Sounds even better without stereo sound,
Wonderful clip. Ronnie was my mum's absolute favourite singer. Such a distinctive voice...and a twinkle in his eye!
proud to be Irish.
The Dubliners are so timeless but it is so interesting to see how young they are all in this clip. In their early and mid 20s.
THE DUBS ARE AN IRREPELEACEABLE BAND SADLY MISSED
Great song, sad because every word of it is true.
RIP Ronnie, you were great
the audience was not prepared
great song! every word of it is true,my dad was of that generation of irish men working in england , i know through assocation!!!!!!!

I lived next door to his sister Marie for 25 years, used to see him all the time as a youngfella, absolute legend

I was wondering the same thing... if John Sheehan is in it then it is past the RDG days haha.
wonderful stuff.
Well I hope Ewan learned lots from Luke!
At this point they were still known as "The Ronnie Drew Ballad Group". It wasn't until a year later that they changed the name to The Dubliners.
Excelente!!!
@paulgallagher13
I have an old Dubliner LP....IT SAYS Ronnie has a voice like gravel being crushed under a door....soooo true, and by God sooo good!!
Thank you machree01
Yes, I absolutely agree Ronnie's voice got much richer as the years went by.
Fucking incredible.
Wow, Ronnie was a handsome devil when he was younger ;)
Oh my, this is an old wan
This is amazing! Great find. I can definitely see Ciaran and Barney, and the other whistle player looks like John, but who is that second guitarist off to the left?
Bobby Lynch who briefly replaced Luke Kelly.
Bobby Lynch .... sadly took his own life
