  • Geylang Methodist Secondary School student Remus Er started out playing Key Master, a type of claw machine for sneakers. He used his savings of S$1,000 to win five pairs of shoes which he re-sold for S$2,500.
Today, this teen boss juggles studying for O-Levels and a sneaker reselling business, Hype Master. He buys limited edition sneakers and the latest releases - like the Nike x Off White Air Force 1 Volt and Adidas Yeezy 350 V2 Synth (non-reflective) Asia exclusive - to ‘flip’ them. On good months, he makes up to S$30,000 in sales.
His biggest sale - a pair of Air Dior Low for S$8,000.

What’s a question you’d like to ask Remus? We have two: Do you still get allowance from your parents and how much is your personal sneaker collection worth?

He is basically a bloody scalper. He's no different from those buying ps5 and reselling. Why are those ps5 buyers and sellers labelled as scalpers while this shoe scalper is getting glorified? He is basically preventing people who genuinely buying the shoe to wear and then reselling them at a much higher price. Bloody scalper.

Its great that he got the entrepreneurship streak at such a young age. However what he is doing is nothing short of being a scalper.
Using bots and trying to evade the countermeasures used by the websites shows how unethical his practice is. He is preventing other genuine buyers from getting access to the products and reselling those shoes at a higher price, to the detriment of such buyers.
I hope his parents could educate him on ethical business practices while nurturing his entrepreneur aspirations.

    • @javiersow2559

Alan Tan I honestly believe you don’t understand this ecosystem, I may just think that this game is just anyhow buying and reselling but no. You need to know what pair is selling . For example, Adidas releases two pairs of shoe at the same time called yeezy cloud white and another Color. But even though they are the same shoe . 1 shoe could not be resold because it is not popular. Not only that , you must know which shoe size to buy not any shoe size would work. US size 10 may be unprofitable but if you buy size 6 you could make money. If you say this does not create anything in the ecosystem u are wrong. Nike Adidas wants ppl like them to raise the price to make their goods more valuable, creating a rush in demand. If you could walk to a store and just simply buy it at retail? Why would there be hype? By creating hype , there is more value in the brand. Not only that there are more jobs created for example the 1b dollar company StockX or even own local startup novelship. By having more jobs what’s wrong with you? Even Gary V teaches kids learn how to flip and sell. He found a market to take advantage of it. If amazon found a market to take advantage of the e-commerce space and even if they inflate the price much higher than buying from Walmart. They help create jobs. Is all about knowing your marketing well Alan Tan. Is not as simply as what you think.

The dislikes and negativity exceeds that of likes and cheers, on UA-cam, Singapore Reddit (thread got locked FYI), HWZ forums and international social feeds, this speaks volume of the whole "newsworthy" bait. To clarify, I don't follow on shoes and these materialism you youths are chasing. I know you are probably lurking and reading these comments. Remus (and Sam Er), you should reflect if this sideline is worth it, rather, a simple question of whether ethics is more important than making a dime. The choice is ultimately yours to make, but be aware of each choice's impacts, and to live with it without having it come back to bite you. To CNA Desmond Ng, you may be new to journalism and probably wants to contribute high impact articles to clock that KPA of yours. The questionable choice of this topic, the subject's inner works and processes, and twisted bait-worthy headline, that does not reflect well on the professionalism of a true journalist or reporter. I believe you can do better than that. All I want is to share an inspiring exemplar to the youths in venturing the outside world and be ethical on it. This is the opposite of what I am expecting, and I am disappointed with the quality produced. I hope to see more empowering articles that is ethical and meaningful.

But for sneakers, it is just a want not a need, no one is forcing these buyers to pay at such high prices, they are willing buyers because they see value. It is almost like stocks. You wouldnt say Hermès or berkshire hathaway stocks is price gouging, they are scarce and ppl are willing to pay.
