Thanks for the great video. I'd like to add that one really needs to remove the sleeve from inside the fuel door in order to easily fish in the new bowden cable. I could not remove mine with pliers without cracking it until I realized that there are little indents placed around the outer ring that allowed me to turn the sleeve with tip of my needle nose pliers. Good for reinstalling too.

Hi there Ryan; many thanks from London (England) You saved me from an embarrassing scene with this video !!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fortunately, in near permanent lock-down I use my E39 sparingly, and decided that with less then a quarter of a tank in my 525d it would be prudent to fill up on my next drive of any length; I don't know what made me check out the fuel cap but went into a (mild) panic when the door wouldn't open.
I always check out E39Source daily as I love watching your video's; love the way you pay minute attention to the smallest of details and I love my old girl, even though she's not an M5. She's a lowly Glacier Green 525d (with Alpina wheels) but she's got all the power I need for my usually small journeys (shopping, "gramps's taxi") and she still looks grand too; these E39's are the best looking cars that BMW ever made (together with the E38's and E46's) and look stylish and refined, like a good Savile Row suit, and not like the later one's, more cheap (and quickly dated) fashion accessories.
Keep it up, and you, your family, and all of your followers, Stay Safe Please.

Thanks for this...I broke that sleeve 10 or 12 years ago from closing the fuel door while the car was locked...oops. Never knew what was required to fix it. Bought the sleeve on Ebay from a BMW dealer for $8 or so, and swapped it out...works perfectly. BTW the tool to install the sleeve is a snap ring pliers. Stick the tip of the snap ring pliers in the holes on the circumference and turn clockwise...took a few tries and I got it.

Thanks for the video mate, I have a 2001 E39 and the lock works sometimes. A quick tip to get the cable in place easily, get some 5/16 or 8mm clear plastic tubing and feed it into place. Luckily, or because it's a BMW, the end of the bowden cable fits inside the tube quite snuggly. The rest is easy, just pull the plastic tube until it is all in place and then replace the plastic cover in the fuel filling area. Cheers.

So mine just went. Failed with door locked. just happened to check on whim. Lucky I did, and didn't discover this at a petrol station with an empty tank.
I could hear the actuator working, so I went inside and watched this vid. Didn't know there was that green emergency release thing. Mine was tucked away. So I gently pull it and it comes straight out in my hand. Great.
Removed all, and my issue is the steel bowden cable snapped at it's metal end piece that goes into the white plastic piece on actuator. Great.
$26.55 USD, genuine, from Latvia. On order.

I recently replaced this part on my ‘03 VW Jetta but it turned out to be the switch in the driver’s side door that fixed it.
They both were the original parts.
Well, at least the parts will outlive the car now.

When the engine is running the RPM is below half which is 500 rounds per minute and it feels a bit vibration when the air going out through the exhaust like something is blocking it and some time when put Drive and turn the steering the car dies. I'm really lost cuz no one has given me the actual problem with my car and they keep on guessing. Computer check up shows everything is fine .

I've replaced the actuator two times and now its broken again.... what a piece of shit. That little DC motor inside always fail. First one was rusted away and on the second one failed the commutator and brushes. In US you are lucky, because you can buy on ebay replacement motor for cheap. For us in Europe its only way replace whole new actuator or buy one from junkyard (which will fail again soon :) )
