M.I.A. and Stephen Loveridge’s Closet Picks
Вставка
- Опубліковано 30 жов 2018
- The star and the director of MATANGI/MAYA/M.I.A. show love to politically charged films like MISSING and DHEEPAN, and reminisce about the emotional balm they found together in our Janus Films collector’s set.
Their selections:
- NAKED
- MISSING
- KES
- DHEEPAN
- BADLANDS

www.criterion....
The worst closets are the ones where people just load their bag barely even saying the title of what they are taking.
This is one of the best closets as it is 2 people sharing their love of film with the world.
Then you have the Safdies who just fill their bags to the brim while detailing each film's brilliance.
8 mins should be the minimum run time for these videos
they got great taste. the fact that M.I.A. is a fan of malick makes her even cooler. i love her taste in films.
I'm glad MIA had the foresight to wear gloves so as not to leave greasy fingerprints on the covers.
I've admittedly watched way too many of these, but this is by far one of the best filled with more unique choices aside from the usual Kurosawa/Bergman/Godard canon, with actual great discussions why.
Their selections:
Naked (1993)
Kes (1969)
Missing (1982)
Dheepan (2015)
A Prophet (2009)
Badlands (1973)
Hello
It's a damn shame that Filmstruck is shutting down 😞
Wolfe 123 Agreed.
Blu-ray and 4K owners looking pretty good right now...
nikosvault I have a Filmstruck account, but still buy physical media as well. I agree with your comment!
Fucking corporate whores are shutting it down.
@@johnsailorsgoat fucking at&t. those bastards are evil. i'm just fortunate that i buy dvds every now and then as i like to have a collection and make it available at any time.
She has barely aged! so pretty
when she grabbed Badlands out of his hands lmao
Criterion, when are you going to restore Perfect Blue and release it in the USA?
I would love for them to do Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers, and Paprika. They could release an amazing Satoshi Kon boxset!
They need to do this. That would be incredible
Shout Factory is putting it out soon!
That Guy fuck yeah
The moment at 7:17 when he just starts staring at the copy of badlands, wishing he was holding it is very funny to me.
I saw the thumbnail and literally screamed YES!!! Saw Matangi/Maya/M.I.A. the other night and fell in love.
SirCamera I’ve been wanting to see it :( I guess I’ll have to wait for it on Netflix or DVD
MIA was supposed to be in Dheepan!? that would have been amazing.
"What is Bottle Rocket?"
What is Wes Anderson?
I almost died when he said that... hahaha
What is the movie, he should've watched directly, after wrapping the video.
Hahah I felt the same way. It hit my gut when he said that... Bottle rocket changed my life
Hahaha I watched the movie literally yesterday for the first time after putting it off for a long time and man was it fun. Long live Wes Anderson
For the record.... Ken Loach did not direct Threads but Barry Hines did write it; it's an absolutely wild movie regardless, well worth seeking out. The other collaboration between them that he is trying to remember the title of is Looks And Smiles.
I love their friendship.
Nice shoutout to Threads there from Stephen, honestly one of the scariest films ever made and a film everyone should bare witness to at least once in their lifetime.
Threads absolutely deserves criterion treatment
M.I.A. confirmed for patrician
Hey she wore this shirt the day I saw her in person at the NY public library with Akil for the talk!! I’m never forgetting that week I got to see her twice :) And July 13 opening for Lauryn Hill
M.I.A. is a LEGEND!
"in this documentary i just made about you" ok mate we get it
what's wrong with saying that? his reference made sense
I know, right? I’d rather talk about the documentary you made. Oh, wait.
It's made even funnier when you find out that she ended up actually hating the documentary
@skin09588 COOL DOWN DRINK SOME ICY WATER KID
Great closet ep, with two interesting guests... however the "What is Bottle Rocket?" killed me inside a little.
Am I the only one who spent most of the video pondering why she put those gloves on and then took them off for no obvious reason whatsoever?
I assumed it was a fashion piece that went with her outfit but then took them off because she didnt want to wear them anymore.
Bored
because she's mia
Sweat
emptypages99 fashion darling.
Been a fan of her since ‘07.
she's so cute and upbeat in this video, I love it. Also love the yellow gloves
4:20 "what is bottle rocket?"
"Dunno, maybe you should watch it"
WATCH IT!!!! Everytime I see bottle rocket in someones hand in the closet I get chills. Although M.I.A didnt even mean to pick it hehe
"Naked" was the first Criterion Collection DVD i ever bought. (back in 2008)
Has anyone else picked Missing ? Love that movie
All I want to is (GUNSHOT, LOCK & LOAD, CASH REGISTER) and watch some Criterion titles.
What brand is his glasses? They are lovely.
Thank god he didn't cast her in Dheepan. The lead actress was the highlight of the film for me.
Just got NAKED recently (CRITERION's always pretty overpriced, but the film selections are often worth it)
van8ryan there is a 50% off sale in november at barnes and noble
theyre really not overpriced
@@JamesKolakowski exactly, you just go to know where and when to buy them.
I just recently got naked too. Took a shower, mate.
I'm not sure if this is inappropriate but M. I. A is really beautiful
Bottle Rocket is definitely Wes Anderson's Best Movie
yes. Real and human
The thing about Wes Anderson is best or worst you are still going to get an amazing film.
For the record Mr Fox is my favourite, might not be his best but it is the one i have enjoyed watching the most and that i can recxomend to anyone and they will also enjoy it
Love these longer videos! More please!
Hmmm, Is it ironic how they are talking about watching criterion collection to get through bad times? Here I am watching criterion picks, also watched The Seventh Seal this morning, and have been watching Zatoichi movies like crazy to get through this Coronavirus bullshit.
That's nice
I don't where you filmed this but if you're around New York then you should get R.A. the Rugged Man if you're inviting guests. He has thousands of movies in his collection and I bet he's seen a lot of these ones.
Macieks300 That would be amazing. R.A. and Vinnie Paz together in an episode would be a must watch! Do it!
Problem though would be that R.A. now resides in Germany with his family.
I now like MIA based solely on her love for badlands
Badlands its for the kids! But yeah for sure cant wait to watch that one with my son 😊
We need Badlands on Criterion in the UK, please. Infact, we need more Malick titles in generally especially my favourite Days Of Heaven which hasn't been put to BluRay over here period. Get on it, please, guys. 👍
@WaterMark I've considered it but when I have the cash for it I can't resist the temptation to just buy a shitload of BluRays instead. Haha.
@WaterMark Haha. If there was loads of titles I love that I could only get on Region A then I'd be more eager to invest in one but besides Days Of Heaven, The Asphalt Jungle & a couple of others, most of what I want I can get somewhere on Region B or Free. For instance I recently bought All That Heaven Allows & High Noon which isn't on BluRay here but I got a German copy of the latter & a Spanish copy of the former & they both play in English audio with removable subs so it's all good.
Badlands is available on Blu-Ray in HMV's Premium Collection. It uses the same transfer as the Criterion release.
@@FrancoisDressler Bought it this week. 👍
Great stuff! always a pleasure watching their opinions on films and why they love them. Also please get Kareem Abdul Jabbar in the closet.
Yes, Mike Leigh! My favorite.
Nuri Bilge Ceylan :(
Nerede geçiyor kankam ?
Where is the video with Paul Dano?
ua-cam.com/video/1dWuslij1o8/v-deo.html here
Lol at “shouts and whispers”
great taste in films and great music
Spielberg hasn't made any pics yet MIA has
Gurl, hold up. “What’s bottlerocket?” Damn, that’s appalling and endearing at the same time.
LMAO literally. My heart snapped when I heard that ..
They're so nice and well behaved, but didn't they know they could get one bag each?
Check out their documentary if you can it’s amazing!
Strphen didn't know what she meant (check his expression) when she started making explosion sounds. I got it immediately...that's my view of mainstream American movies as well. Pkkkkkk....pwwwww....kkkkkk.....BOOM.
I wish this could be expanded a bit more. The guests sit in a little corner of the closet and give interviews about their love for film or their involvement in the medium. Then, they get to pick out movies, talk about their picks and we see a little bit of why they were chosen. For example, in this clip it would've been nice to see some footage from the documentary and maybe how it was inspired by other things they director had seen. I don't know. These fly by too fast.
That's what Amoeba's What's In My Bag is for 😂
What is Bottle Rocket?! Only Wes Anderson's best, if you ask me, before his movies got too bogged down with style and quirk.
BADLANDS Love the nature cinemaphotography
Totally agree with Badlands. But have to give props to In Cold Blood. I don't think we'd have Badlands and so many other great movies if not for that one.
M.I.A. is geving me feelings of Dexter's mom from Dexters lab
I think we have a couple Sissy Spacek fans here.
I always find it interesting that people who are in the closet pick DVDs to take home, over a blu ray of the same film.
They might not have a blu Ray player
OMG MIA!!!!! I have missed her sooo :(
"One called 'Shouts and Whispers' or something like that..." lmao ok
this is awesome thx for sharing!
Independent movie costing 300,000 in 1973 wasn't exactly pocket-change back then though. That's like 1.4 million in today's money
which is less than pocket-change
1.4 million is like the advertising budget for a modern film .
@@timothymorris870 The catering budget, maybe.
"In the documentary, about you that I just made..."
Obsessed with this humble brag. But yeah, I clicked on this being "who tf are you?" and he gave an answer
MIA LIKES NAKED???? Wait is that movie a big deal over there in the UK?
Threads Criterion
FUCK!!! I forgot to get MISSING last sale! Good thing it's November now! *watches clock*
This woman is 43!!!!
WHAT!?
that's impossible
0Axel0 unbelievably, it's true
Where will the Criterion be streamed!!!! I can't afford to buy all those movies I'd want.
Criterion channel. If you’re not from the US you just need a vpn and an online American card
Shouts and whispers 😂
LEGEND
If someone dropped a nuke on Sheffield i doubt anyone would really notice a difference. In fact it might improve it.
😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍 M M M.I.A. M.I.A.
she seem like fun...
Threads is a terrifying film.
All I wanna do is take your movies!
Have these two not got Blu Ray players?!?
awesome
I have no clue who are these people but whatever. Solid picks.
She's a popular singer.
H. Bloom the fuck? she wrote/sang Paper Planes
MIA♥︎♥︎♥︎♥︎♥︎♥︎
Threads is grim
She putting gloves on ...I'm out 😂😂😂
I don't think "Naked" celebrates Outcast.
I love Mia
QUEEN
She really think the characters in naked are supposed to be championed??
Upspeak
I keep thinking she has dishwashing gloves on. 😄
