The hard to admit truth, is that this team would win a Super Bowl this year if we had a better QB. This offense would be unstoppable with someone who can excel in structure and make a couple plays if they have to. Unfortunately, Hurts’ ceiling has been reached and it wasn’t even sustainable
We just have to "hope" this kind of stuff is coachable. It seems like nobody has coached jalen properly outside of Shane steichen. Your right tho, this version of Jalen isn't good enough.
Great episode! Very good explanations on first reads too, I’m not as experienced with football terms but Cosell does a good job at explaining this stuff
Great breakdown by Greg as usual - Hurts seems incapable of staying in the Pocket and Passing the Ball on time and is making it so much more difficult on every teammate from the OL and Receivers - Throw the Ball on time as the Play was designed .. Hurts is wasting layups out there
Beau Allen did a fantastic review of the Falcons run game. Paul Lindstrom killed us. Milton Williams, Jalen Carter and Jordan Davis were players running laterally a fair but. He also highlighted a number of players jumping into strange gaps.
As a big Hurts fan, I completely agree, Hurts needs to process & get the ball out quick. He’s overthinking instead of ripping the leather like Dak would.
Greg is the man. You can tell that Jalen for whatever reason is deciding not to execute the offense & constantly is playing hero ball. Which will eventually get him hurt. I hope he adjusts & just takes what Kellen feeds him. Also, is it me, or has Howie perhaps committed to too many undersized players on the D line? IE: Huff, Ojomo, Nolan Smith, and Rodgers
I’m sure he will. People forget Steichen was the only OC he’s had for more than a season in his career including college and look how he played in year 2 of that relationship. Comfort and experience in a system are underrated things nobody talks about with QBs. People love to compare Jalen to Mahomes, Allen, Burrow, etc. but all those QBs have had the same play caller for at least 2-3 seasons. And look at what happened to Josh Allen the season he lost Daboll. All these armchair QBs love to pretend it’s so easy to just learn a new system and go execute. Even this breakdown is designed to put Jalen in a bad light. Literally you can breakdown any QBs tape and there are reads they miss. The guy had a 76% completion rate for the game, had a touchdown wiped off because DS couldn’t make a catch, and executed a perfect throw to Saquon to win the game and he dropped it. There are def things Jalen can improve on and should work on but like let’s use a little nuance here
@DGoose512 'Designed to put Jalen in a bad light.' So being honest about what they see on film is putting him in a bad light? They never said those misses means he's a bad QB nor that he can't ever fix them. Also, this talking point about how he needs to be in the same offensive system for more than one year to play better was an excuse I was willing to give him in 2021, since he had had 4 different coaches in as many years up to that point. And he proved everyone right the following year. Then Steichen gets hired away by Indy after that, ok, not ideal but that's the nature of the business when your team goes to the SB. He takes a step back last year, and many fans called for Nick and Brian Johnson to be fired, and the latter ends up getting canned. Now Jalen still looks as inconsistent in this offense as in the one last season, and people want to go right back to the excuse of him being in a new offensive system. I'm not saying there aren't going to be some growing pains when you're in a new offense, but the point these guys were trying to make is that Jalen is missing easy open reads within the structure of the offense and he's trying to make plays off structure when he doesn't have to. Those are issues that can't just be explained away by him being in a new offensive system again.
@@rj4646It 100% is designed to showcase Hurts in a bad light. They had 14+ mins of content with a film expert and only showed 3-4 plays where he misses the easy read. Mosher and Caplan control the topics, what they ask Cosell to review/come prepared to talk about, and the challenges/follow up questions to his film study. In a game where Hurts completed 76% of his throws they never showed any film of his positive plays or asked things like “what did he do well at this game?” “How did he do against the blitz?” “Are those misses/mistakes correctable?” The point of this type of show is to examine the bad AND the good so fans like us have proper context. I don’t mind the criticism or pointing out where Hurts struggles. But ask yourself, did you come away with an understanding of what he did well at in this game throwing the ball? I don’t think anyone did. Which is feels more like agenda pushing than analysis. To the other point. Please provide examples of recent QBs where they got a whole new offensive system and thrived in year 1. If it was that easy why do ex players and coaches talk so often about how hard it is to adjust to a new system? Again all the QBs fans want him to be like have all been in the same systems for years, so they have a comfort and know the system cold. Whereas moving from BJ’s offense to this one is completely different. But I will agree if we don’t see him start to be more consistent/execute better by the bye week then we can start having that convo
@@DGoose512I’m a bit down on Hurts but you’re right he made the plays, Hurts isn’t pretty but he sure is effective, but we need more from a $52 mill QB, you got to thump a team like the Falcons. Also Smith should be slot and we need another big physical receiver next to AJ. Smith is so slim when he gets rocked you got to expect the ball to roll.
@@DGoose512he should have made the catch but the ball should be placed further outside away from the defender. that’s a bad throw. jessie bates is either the best or second best safety in the league. he gets paid too. a great throw and the safety doesn’t even have a chance to make a play.
I agree with Greg there's no pressure on Hurts but remember its 4th and 4. Barkley gets closed in on quick and questionable if he gets a first. Dotson appears to be the guaranteed 1st. By the time he gets open Hurts has turned to the right, that's the problem. He flees the pocket is the problem. He feels pressure that isn't there. In practice force him not to run and stand in the pocket, step back or step up in the pocket. This is unacceptable. He has to improve asap
Last year I think that Jalen got into the habit of leaving the pocket because the offense often did not have an easy throw available. Now with a good OC they options are there and Hurts is still not seeing the receivers because he is leaving the pocket early. Let's hope he can get better at moving around the pocket and see the open receivers.
I been telling people he’s not seeing field or reading the defense idk if he’s having trouble with learning the offense or what but it’s really concerning
Cosell proves, once again, Hurts is yet another example of a RB that can throw. That's all he is and ever will be. So, stop thinking he'll ever improve as a pocket QB. He is MR. Consistently Inconsistent. Thats his game, period.
What Cosell is not taking in account is Hurts is a short quarterback. He couldn't see those receivers. All quarterbacks his size and shorter move out of the pocket
Love watching the coaches film and Greg breaks it down and it never lies…Part of me thinks Hurts doesn’t trust his arm in the pass pocket at times…Granted he’s had different offensive coordinators but he’s in year 5 now…this leaving the pocket too early has gotta stop
Hurts has had trouble seeing the field since the beginning of last year. He just doesn't process quickly enough, doesn't read the defense well enough. These are the most important traits for a QB.
Well, that's all very discouraging. I'm starting to think we are in for several seasons of bad Eagles football. We are tied to Jalen for at least a couple more seasons, and we have a bunch of draft capital tied up in young players who stink. It could take years to get this thing back on track.
I wonder if part of the reason why Jalen bails out of the pocket is because the offensive line in front of them is so big he can’t see over them through the lanes
A new offensive coordinator shouldn't affect a quarterback's ability to execute fundamental skills. While the scheme and plays may change, his mechanics, ability to read defenses, and field vision remain constant. Those core abilities aren't altered by a coaching change.
Boy, this Eagles Front 7 were getting manhandled by the Falcons OL for most of the Game in the Trenches - I’m kinda OC surprised the Falcons got away with their Running Game in the 2nd Half where they seemed to put the game more in Cousins hands
Tom Landry once said if you run something, and they can't stop keep running it until they stop it. That is why I think teams are going to keep running the ball on the Eagles defense.
I love Jalen, but this is disheartening to watch. The scheme is putting you in such a good position to make plays and he’s not taking advantage. Instead shooting our self in the foot every time he misses a read and leave the pocket early. We could’ve put 40 on these guys head
Look for Cooper Dejean to be in the slot this week to help with the run fits. Also, Devin White might get time, as Nakobi is ineffective unless he run blitzes
The 4&4 has been explained differently by Q&A and Fran Duffy. So idk who to believe. They thought the blitz was coming, and Goedert would be blocking the DB, but they dropped into coverage. The next play, I don’t think Jalen can see those quick hits on the right. Like there isn’t a clear window. So he tries to cheat a bit and see around the line. They should make his drops deeper.

His confidence in Moore’s scheme can happen this season and he can still improve. Looking fwd to cross reference this with the QB School opinion to get another detailed x & o opinion. Thanks for the pod 🎯
Confirms what my gut was telling me watching it live, Jalen left a ton of meat on the bone. Not trusting his eyes was the same thing that did Carson in
Just like with Wentz in 2017, I'm starting to think Hurts had a fluke season in 2022. He's already thrown half as many INTs as he had all of 2022 (6). It's a shame because this is the best OL, RB, TE, and WR combo in Eagles history and we only need average, competent QB play from the pocket but Hurts seems incapable of doing that on a consistent basis. Unfortunately, the thing Hurts does best is just as likely to be a detriment as a benefit. He's too often running when he shouldn't and not running (and forcing a bad pass) when he should. That can't be fixed with scheme. As for the D, they need to get out of playing 4 man fronts on early downs and get Huff off the field except for obvious passing situations. The double teams are completely neutralizing our DT play. Get more creative with moving JC around on passing downs.
I don’t think Wentz 2017 was a fluke….. he had better statistical seasons after that season. It was just Wentz never had the same consistent reliable help (WRs, RBs and TE’s) outside of that 2017 season…there was a season where only him and Kelce was the only starters that played all 16 games. Hurts on the other hand is not an elite QB, you literally give an everything and he still can’t get it done.
Bit harsh, I don’t think the oline is better without Kelce or that godhertz is better than Ertz. This game they didn’t have AJ brown and Hurts got the ball to Smith in the end zone and he lost one which could have won the game, same with Barkley catch, the WR & RB have to answer the bell when called upon. Also the coach giving up 3 pts at the start shows Sirriani isn’t as good as Pederson because Doug would killed if they lost the game that way
@@20-20_Visionthe throw to smith was a bad throw. he threw it inside allowing the defender the ability to make a play on the football. a good throw is outside and away from the defender.
Hurts played well other than the interception at the end. Should have played it safe we had time and a timeout. Huff was getting chipped most of the game making his strength of being a speed rusher eliminated and nobody else stepped up. Jalen Carter had a terrible game getting beat down by Chris lindstrom all game long.
On the final drive Q bit on the cheese and he can’t do that. Gotta get depth and play that deep post. I still expect Q to be a beast by the end of this year.
@@InsideTheBirds compared to week 1 and last year. This hurts looks more like the 2022 hurts we missed last year. I am very excited to see what is to come with hurts and Kellen this year.
I know this is unrelated but would like some clarification. When the falcons were hit with excessive celebration penalty, did sirianni have the choice to have it enforced on the kickoff, anyone?
I argued with a friend of mind before the game about hurts. I dnt think Jalen is a good QB, he has very good rushing ability but his qb skills suck. He still doesn’t kno how to go through progressions and his decision making skills are questionable. It’s weird this is yr 5 and he still doing the same things as year 2. Either Nick isn’t helping his development or he’s not helping his development
Jordan Davis, Bryce Huff, Nolan Smith are busts. The sooner they admit it, the sooner we can get more capable players on the field. Jaylen Carter is looking like a low effort player, but I'm hoping he can turn it around. That said this is why he slipped to the 9th pick.
I think Hurts can’t see with all these Tall offensive linemen because he doesn’t step into the pocket a lot of throws but hopefully Hurts start making quicker decisions with where he should go with the ball
Hurts of course is an NFL caliber QB, and when he is inspired he does wonderful things. But his arrogance and lack of will to improve as a passer is annoying. I still remember when players complained that he was not approachable, and this also reflects in his game. He clearly thinks he is too good to stay in the clean pocket and is too full on his big play abilities. Even before the season i was thinking that the offense looked awesome on paper IF Jalen's silent ego allows it. It also doesn't help that the media thinks that when Jalen doesn't get along with the coaches, it's the coaches fault. He is not as hard of a worker as his salary suggests.
@@showmeTDs He is elite, no doubt about that. Wentz was also elite keeping the ball too long an going for hero plays. He was awesome during the SB season. He ended up injured and never the same.
Omg, I am sick to my stomach seeing this 😫. I don't understand why he wants to bail and immediately to hire right. It's like he just can't read coverage or need people extremely wide open. He has to let this ball go, and the coaches have to hold him accountable .
I’ll tell you how you address Jalen not read the basic stuff. “Jalen, look at this play: wide open! This one: wide open! This one: wide open!” Ask him wtf he’s doing.
it does happen tho, especially with speed rushers. it’s very difficult to react to the run and then try and turn the corner on someone. if they weren’t getting gashed in the running game or it was a pass first scenario. that’s different.
Enough giving other teams credit. I don't care how above average the Falcons defense looks to you. Our offense is better. Even without AJ and aside from grinding Saquan and Hurts running around taking a million hits, we were not good enough.
I feel like you cherry picked the three clips of him bailing - not liking what he was seeing. He had multiple times this game where he DID stay in the pocket and go through multiple levels of progressions and hit receivers. Should really show both sides to be completely fair…
Uh, you didn't watch the all-22. It was one of his worst games in a while. We gave an example of what he continues to do incorrectly (was a real problem last season and in this game). We could have done several more plays. Go watch the tape and tell us what you see.
@@InsideTheBirdsI’ve watched the all 22 multiple times and I do agree there are times he bails. He’s been great over the middle as well as against the blitz. The offense is also top 6 in dropback SR and EPA. You didn’t highlight the TD throw or the 20 yard throw to Smith where he climbs the pocket. Just feel like you’re only highlighting negatives….
We highlighted some great throws from the opener last week including the Barkley touchdown and made sure to mention how accurate the throw was. The point of the all 22 clips was to illustrate one specific flaw Jalen has shown that really stood out. Did you also want us to show some of the good run defense plays from the game or did we “cherry pick” the bad ones?
@@InsideTheBirdswell the run defense was bad all night. Just think it would make more sense if you showed the clip where the flaw you are pointing out he shows his progress on. He had plenty of good tape this game that you didn’t even mention…
Bad coaching imho. Fangio still has taken out the wide 9 OLB/ Edge defender alignment until yet and it's failing the Eagles. They need to be pinching and disruptive against the opposing Offense. No real pass Rusher is able to out match speed and power without having the upper hand! Outside shoulder or over the gap is the fundamentals ffs! They're line up 0 technique or 3 techniques and they're trying to make up the difference but it's Fangio's responsibility to put them in a position to excel not the opposite!
It's time to admit that Jordan Davis is a complete bust! With his size and agility, it is crazy to see that he gets manhandled continually in the run. He is pathetically soft!!!

Confirms what my gut was telling me watching it live, Jalen left a ton of meat on the bone. Not trusting his eyes was the same thing that did Carson in
Great
Hurts isn't the guy these are the same issues he has had since he came into the league. We need a quarterback. No more excuses for this guy.
Uh, he didn't play well and we're being kind 😭
Either Nick isn’t helping his development or he’s not helping his development
he should not have been allowed to address the team after this game. The team should have been allowed to address him
In the words of future hall of gamer Aaron Rodgers…. RELAX!!!!!! Going into weeek 3 we will be ok. Pass rush definitely has to kick up
Now I know why
Difference between Hurts and Mahomes is that Mahomes finds these wide open receivers that Hurts ignores.
That’s not a excuse drew Brees was shorter he should drop back further than
It’s simple it’s still last years team with no luck in winning the 1 point differences in score
It doesn't help to have a head coach who treats him like a god. That probably explains why nobody has been able to coach him out of this
I don't agree. We saw how elite he can be when his bad habits were eliminated in 2022. That shows he's coachable.
His right*
So JALEN can't STAY IN POCKET..so he RUNS..and we fans applaud his RUNNING ABILITY...because HE CAN'T PROCESS..year 5...DAMN SHAME😢
The scary thing is, Kamara is a lot faster than Robinson.
that’s not even true. but they do have a good offense and it should be a good test
I’ll tell you how you address Jalen not read the basic stuff.
“Jalen, look at this play: wide open! This one: wide open! This one: wide open!”
Ask him wtf he’s doing.
They do the day after the game with film study.
Jalen can't see over 6'8 Beckton ,6'6 Johnson, 6'6 Dickerson, and 6'8 Maliata.
Has literally nothing to do with it
Blank check for Greg.
Huff was jogging ... he wasn't working hard ... Howard was being kind, I know he saw his lack of effort
Sounds like a Fangio issue
Huff was getting locked up in 1on1 with a te. That cannot happen when tackles are drawing double team
it does happen tho, especially with speed rushers. it’s very difficult to react to the run and then try and turn the corner on someone. if they weren’t getting gashed in the running game or it was a pass first scenario. that’s different.
If Barkley makes that catch….
🙄😞😏
Qb 1 ain't doing so good at qb huh I been a defender defender of him but...
Jalen has to be better. Don’t know what’s going on in his head.
Guy doesn’t see it, and never did.
Ask Devin White - before you kick him to the curb.
Is it possible that Hurts cant see over the line and that is why he doesn't stay in the pocket and moves
Hurts obviously got happy feet and can’t sit in the pocket and throw the ball to the open receivers!
We lost what ten games since 2022? Everybody calm down. New coordinators we will get it right
Is this fixable for Jalen?
Enough giving other teams credit. I don't care how above average the Falcons defense looks to you. Our offense is better. Even without AJ and aside from grinding Saquan and Hurts running around taking a million hits, we were not good enough.
This is the problem jalen cant see the field .. should of never been paid
I don't know if Hurts will ever become a really good quarterback.
Everyone just looking to place blame and yall choose Huff
..of many. We just gave one example.
Listen to our shows this week for your answers.
Jalen will get benched if this continues
Happened last year. Nothing new.
Hurts just ain’t QB enough
Do you think him having so many oc's & different QB coaches might play a part in this?
@@kellygreen_kaymeadz4688It for sure doesn't help but he just isn't reading the defense... Looks at first read then bails right even in a clean pocket... He doesn't go through his progessions like most QBs...this is year 5 for Jalen... He should be able to go through his progessions by now... He hasn't improved his pocket awareness at all.. if anything he is regressing
Hurts is the least of the problems on this team.
🥱🥱🥱
The o line played well and the receivers got open all night..so what’s the next excuse
Davis and Carter are busts
😏
Im telling you right now, before jalen hurts snap the ball, he already having in his mind who he's throwing the ball to which was dallas 24:43
Boy, this Eagles Front 7 were getting manhandled by the Falcons OL for most of the Game in the Trenches - I’m kinda of surprised the Falcons got away with their Running Game in the 2nd Half where they seemed to put the game more in Cousins hands
