That was mad crazy! Let's remember, cassettes NEVER skipped or jumped like records and CDs do, which is why lots of tricky DJs used them. With the Pause and Record buttons, anybody can be their own DJ; who needed radio?(except for recording the songs from). Cassettes were a major force in early Hip-Hop culture, and they deserve the kind of respect that DJ Ramsey shows them.
yo check out @ 4:35 because the camera doesn't show it well but he is using the pause button and the volume knob to create a lot of effects. DJ Ruthless Ramsey is the real deal!
Yeah. I studed electronic un secundary, and the only way to move back and forth a casette tape is push "Not totally" The pause button, for leave a bit the capstain roll from the tape.
this geeza gets 110% maximum respect from me. I have been spinning vinyl for 25 years or more, but scratching cassettes ??? ffsk man you are a star ! 11 out of 10 for that routine, fk the DMC and the serato/cd lamers, to me this is a million times more creative and skillful, bigups man !!!
When someone does something as innovative as this it's cool. When they make it sound good also it's amazing. (not sure if it's been done by others but I'm still impressed!) Triple thumbs up for this guy!
I was aware that was possible as I have been a tape guy for a while and know a fair bit in the mechanical nature of cassette players, but I still salute anybody who can do this, as it is not real easy to do when you first start. this is wicked!!!
Finally YES! This is what I'm talking about... Now imagine 21 tape decks wires to each other to allow BOTH mono track as is LEFT and Right selection over the ability to record mono 2 channels or one channel stereo... And, Control over each tapes motor speed, and to be able to cut and scratch as seen here... While taking masking tap a razor and make my own loop tapes... And now do this in 1979 to 1985 I was ten when I built my own studio from thrown out home equipment... You ROCK
I know how it's done. I did this not as good as a kid... Years ago. LOVE showing people this is possible because no one ever believed it could be done. :)
This can be done.. I used to use a cocktail stick to get a decent backspin effect using tapes.. As for the guys saying there is 'scratching' without using the crossfader, this is achieved by the pause button.. a light press takes the pinch roller off of the capstan, allowing the backspin, a harder press takes the play head off of the tape, allowing the 'crossfading' effect.. Nice one Ruthless!! You sure created some controversy on here!!
Nicely done. It reminded me of a documentary I saw in the late 80s I think. It showed these East German cats (I think) scratching with adapted reel-to-reels because they couldn't get hold of records and shit when the wall was still up. I noticed there is vids on YT of some Latvian kid on the DMC in 1991 (called Mr Tape) His situation was the same. That being said. Glad someone is still experimenting with ideas. Keep it up.
love your style and everything you are awesome. It's me Miss Jackeeyy From CBI and Taco Bell. I'm still here. I hope to see you at a club someday. Sincerely Jacqueline Trimm Syme Hamblen Morrison family bloodline.
@edwardlolinglawrence there is a bunch of reasons.cassettes and vinyl have there own sound...they sound more ´´natural´´ then a mp3 or a cd.they have their own sound charactaristics(hope I spelled that correctly) second...with digital downloads you have no cover no booklet nothing to read or to inform yourself about the music that you are listening to.I could go on an on but I think I´ve made my point very clear already! thanks for your question.
Daaaammmmm!!!! I used to try to mix and make beats with tape decks back in the day, but nothin like that! Wow! U R doin things with the tape deck that i even have trouble with on the turntables! Mad props, cuz with tapes u have no margin for errors! Excellent stuff!!! Hmmmm...I still have some tape decks just sitting around collecting dust.........maybe I'll..........Nah! lol Dj Cas. Lawrence, Kansas
THIS DUDE HAS BEEN PUTTING IN WORK FOR OVER 20 YRS. AND IS THE "ONLY" DJ THAT CAN DO THIS! NOT ONLY THAT HE'S IS SICK ON THE TURNTABLES AS WELL AND TEACHES THE "ONLY" CERTIFIED CREDITED COLLEGE IN THE WORLD!!!! SOME OF Y'ALL NEED TO STOP HATING CAUSE YOU CAN'T DO IT, CAUSE IF YOU THOUGHT IF IT THEN YOU WOULD BE DOIN' IT TOO! THIS IS INNOVATIVE SO QUIT WITH YOUR HATE AND CONGRATULATE! AND HE IS A HUMBLE DUDE AND KNOWS HIS HOP-HOP HISTORY, HOW MANY OF Y'ALL CAN SAY THAT? I DIDN'T THINK SO!!!
wow you are very creative. I actually started djing with tape decks, but i used a pencil eraser to do mostly cueing and stuff, not scratching. TOO DOPE, i wanna get my tape decks on now haha
AZ representin! You've done here what I've been trying to figure out how to do for the longest time. I need to source me some cheap decks and start going crazy. I should do this on some Reel to reels too, its really easy to do it on those, just like spinnin a record.
this is pretty cool, unique, alternative, individual and all that shizznet. but what's the advantage over conventional turntables? (besides that fact that tapes usually sound like crap compared to vinyl)
@TezzAtari yo word man, i used to scratch tape cassettes coz i couldnt afford vinyl turntables either, i didnt have a mixer, but damn i thought i was the only one doing it, i recorded my tape scratches on cd, and im glad i still got the audio with me.
That's Crazy! I heard about people saying they did stuff like this back in the day, but I had no Idea it was possible to do this much with Cassette Tapes.
damn, i thought this was my idea. i got bout 500 cassettes and this old answering machine that holds two tapes... was really excited. you did this well man! Hey, how do you keep the tape from tearing???? i d love to talk to you about this. hit me up. wher eyou live?
no lie...i did this with a screw driver back in the 90s...i have numerous friends who can vouch....you are no doubt much better than i was when i was 13 tho lol
there are special "For DJ use" versions of many songs, some of those cassettes would have only had samples instead of songs, which you can get on vinyl. like for example, there are albums you can get that has a drum and bass roll, and then you have other samples, so you can effectively make your own tunes with what is available live. take a further look into DJ'ing before you make critical comments thank you!
im lost for words...... tha shits amazin!!! i remember mixmaster mike sayin in his documentary tha he used tape decks first, dont think even he saw this comin..
hahaha cant help laughing at your spins! wicked skillz mate ;) i couldnt belive it when i found someone had done this.. i had and idea agez ago of fixin a disc to one of the reels of a tape deck to see if it would scratch... never did it tho lol .. nice vid!!!
ruth1ess ramsey !!! ive seen this near1y a hundred times- s0 rad ,but its ab0ut time an0ther tape mix went up! fu11 1ength 10 mins! the fi1ming and sync is tight, wh0ever put this t0gether - we11 d0ne as we11
why the hell i´m still trying do this with turntables??? Man you are sick !!! This leaves me with a deep trauma, why did i kick out all my cassettes 15 Years ago ???? Why couln´t you show me that before !! LOL , Thats truly inspiring, how did you come up with that ? Big respect from 0711-Stuttgart !!!
YO THIS IS PASTOR M.C.SOLDIER AND THIS IS MY BOY AND HE IS DEFFIANATELY OFF THE CHAIN.THIS WAS ALSO RECORDED VERY LONG AGO SO TO CHECK OUT HIS NEW STUFF YOU MUST COME TO AZ OR BOOK THE HOMIE...GOD BLESS RAMSEY....
I love that this is all happening in the waiting room of a boring looking office.
yo, never imagined even thinking that could be done. CRAZY skills on the tape decks. He probably tears it up on the 1200s too!

DJ Ruthless Ramsey, Man you got me flipping on how you can cue and scratch on cassette decks? You don't fool around Brother!

From the headphone output of tape deck connected to a mixer
