    Metroid Dread is honestly one of the best recent success stories in gaming, from being heavily rumored, then getting nothing from it, then getting confirmation that it was cancelled twice before finally seeing the light of day this year due to MercurySteam’s work on Samus Returns. And the fact that we got such an amazing game in the end despite such as tumultuous development period, like with Mother 3, is what makes this story so satisfying.👌🏽

    11:10 Metroid Fusion DID have a single intentional sequence break. There's a series of shine sparks you can perform to escape the underwater section without the charge missile, it even has its own dialogue talking about shine sparks .
    This sequence break itself also has an alternative route where you have to carefully angle your missiles whilst falling but it still plays the same dialogue talking about shine sparks.

      We did not know gaming.

    • @jerryborjon
      @jerryborjon 2 роки тому +39

      I don’t think it’s really a sequence break. I’m pretty sure the game just turns you back anyways, at least from what I remember. I don’t think you can actually fully skip anything by doing this.
      That easy alternate route to the secret screen might be considered a sequence break though. You ARE skipping the “intended” shine spark route by just shooting a missile while the screen is shaking. It leads to the same place though. All it skips is the shine spark route to the secret screen, which still turns you back.

    Crazy to think that Mirror of Fate of all games led to Samus Returns and Metroid Dread. I actually kind of have a soft spot for that game, but not a lot of people do. If nothing else it had an ambitious presentation for a 3DS sidescroller as well as stylish boss fights. Crazy that Sakamoto was one of those people charmed by MoF, but it makes sense seeing the elements that were adapted into the Metroid games. Really happy MercurySteam were around since otherwise these games could very well have never happened, period. What a waste that would have been.

    Great coverage. Really appreciate deep dives from staff whenever possible even if sometimes only articles, images or otherwise are available.
    I'd say some Saturn, Dreamcast or Vita Games (note-able ones that aren't the big IPs like Sonic but a Power Stone, Sega GT or something, Kao the Kangaroo or something with some good secrets, development history or so. Being broad as there is tons to look at of course and depending on what you consider/audience appeal is up to you) would be cool. That or a console look at the Neo Geo, Wonderswan, handhelds other than Nintendo's. The more interesting niche but sizeable audience systems not just the usual.

    Dread was so good, I started writing a three part fanfic about what I think could happen after the events of Dread.
    A few questions for Metroid Lore experts:
    -Do you consider everything that occured in Other M to be canon?
    -Does Samus know how to cook?
    -Why did Samus lose her suit in Zero Mission when she crashed her ship?
    -Why does Samus lose abilities in between games?
    -Do you think the EMMI units were originally created to hunt down Samus, considering they were immune to all her weapons and could kill her with a single stab?
    -How powerful is the Galactic Federation in military force? Where do they line up against the Star Wars Galactic Republic? Or the Halo UNSC? Or the DOOM ETERNAL UAC/ARC?

    • @novustalks7525
      @novustalks7525 2 роки тому +1

      Other m is canon.
      Samus probably cooks.
      She lost her suit because of the damage from the crash.
      She doesn't lose the abilities story wise. Just for gameplay. Within the actual story she still has her abilities most of the time.
      The emmi probably were made to be immune to samus.
      And it's not clear

    I think the best part about this is that because dread was basically a rumour with next to no actual details, they could have made this exact game but name it something different and no one would bat an eye, but because it’s dread makes it more special.

      Technically, we did get a 2D Metroid just a few years ago with "Samus Returns." It's just that it's been a long time since we've gotten a *brand new* 2D Metroid game.

    • @xRocketzFighterx
      @xRocketzFighterx 2 роки тому

      @@Compucles I'm more talking about a new entry not a remake.
      Metroid 2 official and fan remake was such poor timing but both games are super damn good. During the OpperationDread trend that was going on I actually gifted digital copies of super metroid, fusion and one digital copy of Samus returns to my bro and friends.
      The whole voting with wallet thing is kind of a grey area to do as a fanbase but all us metroid and nintendo fans had to scream loud that "yo we want metroid to stay. less mario and more metroid plz. (and earthbound, Kid icarus, starfox, etc.)"

    I just wanted to point out - u mentioned that Fusion has NO sequence breaks, but it actually does have some, most notable being the one where u can completely bypass the underwater level. Its a very very hard skip to pull off, but doing so, the characters from the game break the fourth wall, saying how impressive that was and question whether or not anyone will even be able to see this message. its really cool!

    At last, the answer to all the riddles...and it sounds like the answer is pretty straightforward. Sakamoto was sketching out some brainstorms about a possible Metroid game, thought "Metroid Dread" sounded like a cool title, tucked in a folder on his computer somewhere once he got tapped to work on other things, and that was about it as far as development goes for over a decade. Then Nintendo needed to pad a document for the press so they tossed the name "Metroid Dread" onto a spreadsheet at E3 and filled in some generic text - probably since whoever was writing the spreadsheet hadn't actually talked to Sakamoto, who probably would have told them he didn't actually have a game planned out, it was just some brainstorming. Then a few years later, coincidentally, the Retro Studios folks thought something called "Metroid project Dread" would make for some cool flavor text in one corner of one level, without realizing that thousands of mile away, Sakamoto had also thought that phrase sounded cool a few years ago.
    Basically, it seems like the legend of Metroid Dread is a string of coincidences and people spitballing, not some top-secret game that got cancelled and remade and cancelled in a vast conspiracy across decades to stop another 2D Metroid game. That's a lot more believable than some of the things I've seen on message boards and the like over the years.

    • @DJIVision
      @DJIVision 2 роки тому +1

      I think that's more of an easter egg than a sequence break, since it doesn't let you acquire any upgrades out of order, because the developers intentionally lock the door to the Main Deck so you can't grab the Diffusion Missiles early (which you'd be able to do if they hadn't locked it). Sorry if this sounds pedantic, but the definition of a sequence break (according to Wikipedia at least) is "the act of performing actions or obtaining items out of the intended linear order or of skipping 'required' actions or items entirely." The hidden Adam conversation I don't think really fits that description. Or at least that's my interpretation. Cheers mate.

    I also *hate* to nitpick because this video is great but 11:50's glitch technique is pseudo-wave, not plasma, since the Wave Beam allows shooting through walls, Plasma just allows it through multiple enemies
