    Jake is truly one of the best Penguins of all time and always will be. A clutch player and a rock for this organization. 58 points in 58 playoff games. I wish him nothing but the absolute best. Thank you for all of the memories, Jake. Go get another one.
    I’ve been lucky to see my Pens win 3 Cups during my life. Now is the time to regroup and rebuild - look to the future. An era over, but certainly not wasted.

    I like this deal as a canes fan and penguins sympathizer. Pens get some solid B prospects + a familiar face in bunting(familiar to Dubas) and canes get the big fish for playoff scoring. Hate to see Vasili Ponomarev go but as tight knit of a locker room that Carolina is, this trade both upgrades us and keeps our tight knit group intact seeing as this was buntings first szn with the Canes.
    Really truly worth it if canes resign Jake.

    • @dealy9268
      @dealy9268 3 місяці тому

      Ponomarev is a solid A prospect. He is NHL ready. Probably better than three of the Canes centers. I would have rather sent Drury or KK to Pitt. Staal has declined big time this year.

    The fact that Adamn Henrique pulled a first round pick, but the best playoff scorer on the market could only pull a second(First if Carolina's curse ends) is crazy

    • @neutralsportsfan17
      @neutralsportsfan17 3 місяці тому +1

      The Hurricanes gave up 3 prospects that were ranked 6-10 in their system though. The Oilers didn't give up any prospects to get Henrique. Nobody knows if any of the guys the Hurricanes traded will pan out, but there's a big reason why it was only a conditional 1st rounder.

    • @Sultimate93
      @Sultimate93 3 місяці тому

      There are 3 separate 2nd round equivalents in the trade, calling it only a second is very disingenuous. Lucius has also performed far above the expectation of a 4th round pick, he's got the same points and more goals in the same number of games as Issac Howard. Howard was 31st overall in the same draft as Lucius. You can argue whether it's better to have a late first or 3 middle 2nd's, but claiming the returns are one first versus one second is just not true.

    • @jdf9456
      @jdf9456 3 місяці тому +1

      If PIT somehow make the playoffs (NJ, NYI and yes even the Caps who just blew them out are no more than 3 pts in front of em and they have played less), those who were okay with sending away Guentzel will eat their words. Although I'm glad that Sam Poulin is finally producing the way he should and more in the AHL and should be called up in the circumstances, the guy's been unlucky with injuries and other issues, he's gonna be 100% ready for NHL action next year. I just can't believe one of the teams that gives the least goals (Pittsburgh) with the goalie who has the most shutouts this season....thing is, all their other goal scorers other than Crosby/Malkin have been injured at different times of the year, some multiple times (Rust), Rackell took a while to get going, I think Rust getting injured right after Jake was what made the team decide to trade Guentzel even if they didn't get anyone near his caliber in return (immediately).

      All ive heard for the last 5 years from pens fans is that, "The pens need a player like Patric Holmqvist". Bunting is that type. He provides an edge, is skilled, and will score dirty goals in the crease. The pens are too easy to play against and need a spark.

  • @TheZenomeProject
    @TheZenomeProject 3 місяці тому +34

    Honestly, I can't be happier with today. This is what the big boys do sometimes. Canes have so many magic beans in our farm system. If they think a player like Guentzel is a long-term fit, now's the time to scatter some of them to try him out. I love this.
    That being said, I don't think that the trade was nearly the fleece that some Pittsburgh fans think it is. Koivunen has second-line upside if he hits but has a low floor because of some skating concerns relative to size. Ponomaryov is very likely going to be either a 3rd line center or a very good 4th line center in the NHL. Lucius is a total wild-card who probably will just be an AHLer but could be something good. Bunting is flippable for a 1st or 2nd round level return in 2 seasons. They did very well themselves. The conditional 2nd is underwhelming in that the highest it can be is 31st overall, but considering how large that prospect package is, it's not bad.

    This might be a good move for the pens. Hear me out. Although we didn’t get much besides 3 mid prospects (Ponomarev & Koivunen look decent) and a 2nd rd(potential 1st.) and a conditional 5th. Our SJS is top 10 protected. Loosing Guentzle will help us tank. And we could potentially get 2 1st rounders (one in the top 10) and a 1st if Carolina wins the cup.
    Then, we could re sign Guentzle; and if we do . We won the trade. I’m kinda upset we moved on from Smith. The guy was only 23 and still had a lot of skill and potential. He led the farm team in scoring as a defenseman.

What will really determine the otucome of this trade is if the prospects can become good contributors to this team in the next year or two before the core retires. Also, I will certainly be rooting for the Canes to make the final this year lol

  • @dathaniel9403
    @dathaniel9403 3 місяці тому

    I love this trade. Guentzel is just the type of player we need to produce offense in the playoffs. Bunting was okay for us but he's not exactly been spectacular and he's officiating poison, which could really hurt us in the playoffs -- virtually no infractions against him from other players are called and he gets called for everything because the refs see him as a "diver" from a couple of incidents when he was on the Leafs. I'm sad to see Ponomarev go, he looked like he could be a really solid NHL player, but to get a player of the caliber of Guentzel you have to sacrifice some valuable pieces. I'm fine with the draft picks, too -- most likely we just end up paying a second round pick, and if we end up paying a first and a fifth it's because we made the finals and won the Cup, so who would be complaining then? Overall I think Don Waddell is doing a fantastic job as GM and building this team in a way that allows us to win now but also be sustainable for the future. We don't mortgage our future to win now, which is why we've had playoff success every year since Rod has been head coach and Don has been GM.

    Ecstatic as a canes fan. Probably the best player this deadline up for grabs, fills a big need for us scoring goals. On top of that we didn’t lose any of our top prospects when I thought we would have to. Losing bunting and (maybe) a first sucks but if we resign Guentzal it’s a STEAL no questions asked. Obviously if we don’t resign him and don’t win the cup it would not have been worth it even if we traded only a 7th round pick. But it was a risk well worth taking and hopefully can turn into a long term huge boost to the team after resigning him

    I think its a good deal if Jake is a rental. Bunting can be a Kunitz/Neal type guy for us so i dont hate it.
    I did watch Dubas' press conference after the deadline and he mentioned that adding young prospects allows us to make moves for more young nhl guys. So i do expect 1 or 2 of them to be moved in the next year

With that being said, hockey fans be real with me are the prospects we got in the trade top 6 potential? Our fans r absolutely irate at this trade but I honestly dont think it’s that bad for a rental. Sets up our future potentially.

    Guentzel and his representation made it clear no contract would be negotiated before the end of the year. Dubas was handcuffed by Guentzel’s 12-team no trade and the fact that Dubas didn’t want to lose a player like that for nothing in free agency. It wasn’t a great return, but Dubas didn’t want to take any chances of losing Guentzel for nothing.

    As a Penguins fan, the trade at face value does seem a little underwhelming. None of those prospects are ranked Top 5, but 2 of them could be playing on the team as early as next year which can be a good thing for the team depth as we've seen is pretty shallow. Obviously if Carolina wins the Cup, that return can look a little sweeter. This was better than loosing Jake for nothing. Bunting does not replace Guentzel, but I would've rather have gotten him this past off-season than Reilly Smith so I'm happy with getting him. At this point, I kinda hope the Pens just tank for the rest of the year so they can get their top 10 1st pick back from San Jose has part of the Karlsson trade. To Canes fans: Congratulations! You're getting a really good player with outstanding hockey IQ and heart. He could potentially begin to flame out within a few seasons but for now, should help them win it all.

    Penguins got fleeced, prospects are rated # 7 # 9 and # 10 in their system... they're all small undersized forwards who aren't even close to being NHL ready. Dubas is in full bend over and take it mode.

  • @severed111
    @severed111 3 місяці тому

    Sid didn't get a winger on par with Guentzel, but who knows what Bunting can do on a line with Crosby and/or Malkin. One of their few prospects is killing it right now in Scranton, Samuel Poulin is finally showing he is first round material after the injuries and the other issues, they might as well bring him up for the rest of the season, because I don't see a future where Poulin isn't with the big team next season. Kinda sad about Ty Smith too, last year he put out decent points and +/- and he was one of their other young #1 draft picks they acquired by robbing the other team. I can sense that after the blowout against the Caps yesterday that they might have thrown the towel, even if the 3 teams ahead of em barely are (including the Caps), NJ are on a downward spiral and the NYI are very "eh" and PIT still have games in hand. I'm sad Jake's gone for sure...but that's a lot of young talent and they needed more of that.

You might as well sign your own death warrant given that Carolina just solved their only weakness, which was the Rangers only advantage over them.

    This looks to me more like a baseball trade than a hockey trade, in the sense that PIT got back a lesser winger with more term, picks, and a bunch of lottery ticket prospects. The 3 non-NHL guys I view as the baseball equivalent of young A-ball Dominican hard throwers - will any of them turn into major leagures? Tough to say this early. But if one (or more) of them does, then the Pens look like geniuses in a few years.

      The 'Canes had to answer the Panthers getting Tarasenko. Guentzel will be a bigger aaset for us. Bunting was steady, but not the pest in front of the opposing net, as advertised. Plus he was a double digit minus on the ice, which was a detrement. After being swept in the Eastern Conference final last year, we had to get another sniper. Now with both Svechnikov and Guentzel, they have the fire power on every line. I believe they can re-sign him in the offseason.

    If Adam Henrique, Elias Lindholm, and if Sean Monahan were each separately worth a non-conditional 1st, then Jake Guentzel + Ty Smith combined being only worth essentially a late 2nd is the biggest slap in the face Dubas could of delivered to the Penguins franchise. He's so obsessed with chasing his white whales from Toronto that he's making terrible decisions.
