In dedication to my favorite band of all time.
I was 10 years old when this album came out. I had heard the radio singles so I borrowed the CD from a friend. While cleaning my room, it was probably the first album I ever listened to from start to finish without skipping around. When Only in Dreams came on, after the second chorus, I was expecting it to end. It didn't. It kept going and building. By the time the song ended I realized I had unconsciously stopped cleaning to lie down on my stomach inches from my boom box with my chin in my hands, propped up on my elbows. I had been entirely entranced by the instrumental climax of the song. That's when I realized music was a heart language and I never listened to music the same way again.
Thank you for the amazing comment.
For me, the Blue Album, and weezer as a whole, was the bridge between childhood and teenage-hood. I tried listening to all the songs teenagers were "supposed" to listen to, and when none of the new stuff really got me, I listened to stuff for people who liked rebellion, All American Rejects, My Chemical Romance, they didn't speak to me either, I kind of thought of them as stuck up, but then I listened to Weezer on my way home from some vacation. I was on a flight, and after hearing some songs I had liked, i downloaded a random weezer playlist off of youtube, played Buddy Holly like, 15 times in a row, and then, took my earbuds out and thought, "now what," I slowly stopped listening to the stuff my parents liked, and became a massive weezer fan. That's how it impacted my life I guess.
i am where you were. I don't really like the songs that are popular among people my age in my country at all, not to disrespect anyone's taste though. But i do wish people's taste here was more varied and that they respected people who don't listen to the same shit too.
Blue and Pinkerton honestly helped kickstart my obsession with music a few years back, even after the countless albums I've listened to since Blue still has a spot in my top 10 favorite albums
My name is Jonas is about that sick harmonica solo
Its crazy how popular Weezer was that they made a whole character about the band in Jimmy Neutron
I've always wondered the story behind "Jonas". He seems to represent Rivers in both "My Name Is Jonas" and Songs From The Black Hole.
I didn't realize the character from "No One Else" was the same as the character from "The World Has Turned And Left Me Here".
Buddy Holly has to be a nerdy love song. The "your eyes are slit line" seems to foreshadow Rivers's taste in Asian women (Across The Sea, El Scorcho, his actual marriage)
I didn't also didn't know that Mykel voices the the girl in Undone! Interesting how Surf Wax is not one of the bigger Blue tracks, yet the beach rock style ended up being used the most over their career.
Love all the old pictures you found too! Think you'll cover the rest of the stuff on the Deluxe version eventually?
I’ve considered it! Maybe once the series is complete I’ll create a video covering various Weezer songs that never made their actual respective albums. I’m glad you enjoyed it!
i actually didn't know this apart from rivers love of asian woman lol, thanks for sharing this
Crazy Weezer only ever made two albums, such untapped potential
For real I'm glad they didn't continue and try to beat a dead horse . . . phew
Cant believe they made a reunion album this year. Its almost like they never left
Respect the white album and everything will be alright in the end?
Yeah. Make Believe and Raditude are some of the best rock albums of all time.
lol it's your loss asshole
We're really just gonna ignore the guy in Surf Wax drowning? ("The undertow is strengthening its hold, I never thought it'd come to this, now I can never go home")
Can’t wait for Pinkerton that’ll be epic 😎👍
It is now out my friend. You probably already watched it
Watched it
Only Weezer could make a banger out of a song about car insurance
Only in Dreams is such a Masterpiece
Can't believe i found you via a Jeb Bush video and now I'm watching a patrician documentary about Weezer.
I remember I was jamming to My Name is Jonas and my history teacher told me if I had heard any other weezer stuff and he told me to check out this album. He told me this band wrote an entire song devoted to liking X-men and KISS and for some reason that was enough for me to make my mom take me to Best Buy to get it. Changed my life, best introduction for this band you could have😍
It was the first album I could truly I loved with my whole being. So nostalgic. Love this video, excellent work!
Except for the year, I share a birthday with the good ol blue album
Cool
The blue album just started my addiction to this type of music and at the level it is composed River’s song writing and voice and the rest’s of the band’s awesome instrumentals just make me want to listen more, The blue album was just a start as I venture to Weezer’s whole discography
I need this. Great job dude please continue
this album means a lot to me. As well as the band. All of my other faves lack something on that relatability, be it the display of insecurity and fragility, or of hope even if small, or mabye even abstractness. But this one is perfect. I can relate and/or empathise with everything in this one. ESPECIALLY only in dreams. It doesn't feel like a song about a concrete thing, but more like a feeling or set of them. But i think of it exactly as you say, a song about a person who wants to be with another but can only dream about it, think about the what ifs. And wait. But they have hope, i see hope in that melody. Masterpiece, simply.
Weezer is probably the most relatable band I've ever listened to. They made it ok to be a nerd, in a way. They're a band for people like me.
i'm with ya on that.
Say it ain't so is hands down one of my favorites. I literally grew up with that song man.
What a great clip!
I've always wondered who was talking on Undone!
Would be great to hear Rivers comment on the song analyses.
0:58 Grunge Rivers, two 80's teen movie actors, and Matt Sharp.
Damn dude, this was a great vid. Glad to see someone who appreciates Weezer this much.
Hey brig
I love Weezer so much. I owe all of it to my dad though. He's pretty much a 90's music type of guy so he would always play Weezer, Nirvana, Radiohead, Rancid, Foo Fighters and a lot, lot more on our way home from the gas station or something.
Cant believe this is the video that got me into weezer. Now they are my fav band. Thanks zeep
I’m so glad I was able to accomplish that. Cheers!
very well made
May is basically weezer month
not enough justice for world has turned 😔 still great video though
I’m a sucker for vids like this
The summer camp i work at has a weekly beach day, where all the staff and campers join up on the deck of the lodge and dance crazy to beach songs during lunch. We always play surf wax America, and some of my best memories include slowmo fale surfing during the breakdown. XX
This video is amazing. The hell.
Thank you!
hey man!! i don't know if you'll see this or not but i just wanna say your video has helped me a lot!! i choose to thematically analyze the weezer blue album for my english final, im not the best at looking into things to see what the theme is of everything but your vid has definitely helped guide me through a lot; i would have never been able to guess what in the world my name is jonas means just through the lyrics lmao :')
I’m so glad it helped! Thanks for watching!!
Its pronounced "Oh-kay-sick" Ric Ocasek.
"it fucking rules"
Rivers: *:)*
I thought Jonas represented the youth and the wheel meant they had control of their life, but Wepeel (the name of Rivers' sled, which is a reference to The Giver.) represents the adult.
Bro I love the video but it’s Ric O-ka-sick and Geffen with a hard G 😉
Ok I Will Defintley watch every video for Weezer.
Great video
I like the fact that i bought a pirate copy of the blue album in a nepali market in 96 and became a fan.
I've never really known anything about them or wanted to.
The music is pleasure enough.
The interview was with Rolling Stone magazine, not The Rolling Stones
Needs a bit of Raditude.
Wee keeping it weezer
WEEZER
Why does it look like they're all dead by hanging in the thumbnail
Because they are
@@zeepsterd My condolences to the weezers
Oh cool another music channel
please do it for Pinkerton please
0:26 So that's where Chad Channing ended up after Nirvana. The resemblance between Chad and longhair Rivers is crazy.
God bless Chad Channing
When I was in 9th grade I used to listen to weezer on the bus everyday and just stare out the window at the sunrise
I truly agree that the blue album is the best first album for any band. Weezer is one or if not on of my favorite bands of, along side radiohead and nirvana. I never really got into there later albums, but I have listened to a few. But the album is just so iconic and perfect. It truly is one of the best albums of all time, every song slaps no bad ones. This is truly the best weezer retrospective ever, epic. :)
doesn't the surfer guy in surf wax america drown in the end though?
Can't wait till your Pinkerton retrospective.
heh
damn bro i cant stop WEEZING IT! 😂😂and by IT, lets just say my PEANITS! 😂😂😂
cool
Amazing video but one question, who was the letter directed to after cuomo confessed his feelings?
It's actually from my own perspective! Before my girlfriend and I started to date, we were huge Weezer fans. Following a long drive of us talking and listening to Weezer, Only In Dreams played. After it was finished I admitted to her how I felt and we held hands afterwards and started to date. Pretty mushy stuff I know, but it was cute!
Zeepsterd haha, that’s great! I totally thought the message was actually directed at Susanne so, it totally fit well with only in dreams!
Damn, I miss Rivers's Velma cut.
Wow dude- I never pieced that together! Great observation- Ace Frehley and Peter Criss were much less-popular than Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. I didn’t know that about 12-sided die
Only in Dreams is actually about Rivers’ songwriting process. Rivers actually said that
mallrats is a classic
SAYY IT AINTT SOOoOOOooooO
YOUUR DRUUUG IS THE HEARTBREAKEEER
Man you should have talked about lullaby for Wayne
Jeffen?
here before it gets copystricked
Jackson Mallory lol still hasn’t happened
My favourite part is where he mispronounces David Geffen and Ric Ocasek’s last names wrong…and calls Kevin Smith Kevin James…oh yah, then completely skims over Surf Wax America. Good times 👍
I can never understand if he’s being sarcastic or not
Surf Wax America is actually a very bitter sweet song about escapism gone wrong. Smh
How so?
The protagonist has his nose up saying hes surfing while you suckere are grinding it out commuting to work. But then he dies or maybe he just realizes how lonely and vulnerable he actually is living a life of surfing and nothing else.
Huh huh, crappy days.
Why does the thumbnail look like weezer are being hanged?
11:50
I wish I had found weezer about a year earlier. I found this musical gem after I told my friend about the girl I had a crush on and how I found out she was a lesbian. He told me to listen to Pink Triangle and I was immediately hooked on Weezer.
According to an interview with The Rolling Stones...
I thought the thumbnail was the crew hanging themselves.
zaza
"mallrats.....a movie by Kevin James..."
🤣🤣🤣
Was looking for this comment. Kevin James.... SMH.
Long hair rivers looks like he would beat up bowl cut rivers and steal his girlfriend
i thought that was chad Channing for a second
Great music is born not of inspiration... but.... of boredom 😉
Rick okasek
Ok now do Pinkerton
I did
I always thought that No One Else was about someone who doesn’t like their girlfriend, and imagines the perfect girlfriend for themself
Half of this makes sense and is good but then the other half makes no fucking sense
Whys that
I hope that “Kevin James” remark was a joke. Haha
Rick "Occacet"
oh, Richard Theodore Otcasek- my bad
Lmao jeffen
and for those who never watched this Cowboy Bebop version of Only In Dreams ua-cam.com/video/DW7fNAKk6oc/v-deo.html&ab_channel=DavidFigueroa
why do u look like john egbert
i get this question a lot
He’s being sarcastic right?Im such a dumbass
Video is great, but you should DEFINITELY learn the pronunciation of some of these names. Lmao
It gets better as the series goes on. Sorry about that!
not to be rude but you butchered rics last name
It’s so strange to have Gen Z kids talk about and analyze Weezer....
I’m disappointing you didn’t talk about mykel and carli
Who else only came for Buddy Holly
Mispronouncing everything
Jesus… the butchering of pronunciations runs rampant. Or should I say “Geezus”?
Why do you talk?
If this your favorite band you need new ears
You are a fucking
