I'm sick of the baseball card collector mentality that dictates you devalue a guitar by re-fretting it or replacing a trashed pot. It is only because people share this mass delusion that these weird requirements persist.
@Noble Failures why? That one will work just fine when he gets it back. Why wouldn't he use it for...ummmm...lets see... *Exactly what it's made for?* 🤷♂️
You have the right attitude, keep it as a player. This guitar is cool and battered and worth getting it back as good as it could be. This is not a sacred cow, this is an old soul rocker.
Yes 100% want to see unboxing and playing. If it was “unplayable” before I can’t wait to hear you noodle with the ‘58 post surgery. Looking forward to it Matt.
hell yeah i want to see the repair video. Who cares if people complain about footage. People will complain about anything, and dont get me started on trolls.
I personally would love to kinda experience first play on this beauty with you. Idk know why... i think that it would give me like piece of what you will feel. Thanks for sharing story and greetings from Poland!
Okay, two things: (1) I am a grown man with kids and my 5 year old daughter asked if that was a Minecraft Creeper on the shelf under the fan! 🤣 I told her it’s probably an effects pedal but she isn’t buying that. (2) I second what jon hiebert said in his comments a bit ago: “Well hell yes we want to see the re-unboxing!” Good stuff my man! Keep it coming!
@@davidmessina8108 I have that same pedal, that's what I thought of after recognizing the Minecraft Creeper similarity. @matthew scott - Yes to unboxing & Yes to repair video regardless of the quality, assuming there is some narration to supplement what's being done.
I'm a fiddle collector and work with a luthier here in Seattle. Totally randomly, I sent him your videos about this beauty just a few minutes ago. Lo and behold, this new update came out today! Thank you for saving this :) well loved, well played, in the past and hopefully long into the future. Good instruments will pretty much always outlive us and go on making music long after we are gone. This is an incredible labor of love by all parties involved, to save it for future generations
Yes please, show another unboxing vid, I love the reactions of players when they plug in a new/used/vintage guitar for the first time. They'll never be another first, and that reaction is priceless, and can't be recreated after the fact. Thanks for the update, I even got my wife interested in this guitar's story, and she could care less about my "guitar stuff"!
I'm a mechanic and not a musician. However, I COMPLETELY engaged in your passion and historical love on this rebuild. We WANT the Part III follow through. :) Thank you.
Good call on the rebuild of the p90's, amazing your friend can rewind. I feel your pain...had a 70s sg with T Tops with 2 bolts in the neck/headstock--a real frankenstein! only paid $100 for it and had my luthier friend Michael DeTemple fix as a trade for painting his kitchen-sweet deal! Thanks for documenting this process Matthew -its awesome
Absolutely want you to do an unboxing! You are very fortunate to have a good restoration luthier! I bet she will be able to sing the blues again for another 60 + years!
Totally in line with your wanting to get this gem back into 'playable' condition, while leaving her aged beauty intact. To be able to see how time has weighed in on the work of artisans from long ago is a tribute to their efforts at the truest level. Looking forward to her next presentation.
I have had broken bobbins on P90s. Not uncommon from overtightening of the screws. Jared Brandon of Brandonwound Pickups unwound the wire, reglued the bobbins, and then rewound the original wire. Did a great job with excellent results. I do have to say that yours looked worse than mine. Good on you for making it right again.
I vote for the unboxing! I have a '57 LP TV Special that is nearly all original. They are beautiful and I am so happy you are doing this the right way!
I thought about that guitar once in a while and I was wondering when we would see it again.I want to see everything, unboxing and repair videos...Thank you Matthew,
New subscriber here...Just a couple of weeks ago I saw your 1st and 2nd vids on the 58 Les Paul. The worn down condition of this guitar, the way the fretboard was worn, everything about this guitar screams about the stories, about the soul of this guitar. Every guitar tells a story, and every guitar has a soul. Just to be able to play this LP would be amazing. So hell yeah, do an unboxing. Let us share that moment of the first post-repair plug in, tuning and jam. I'm sure that the original owner of that guitar will be looking down and screaming "turn it up."
I love seeing video of skilled luthiers doing their magic, anything guitar related. It's a learning experience and can help us guys that like to work on our own stuff and our friends stuff. Bringing that one back from the brink of the scrap pile would be a fascinating video. Taking the steps to restore it was the right thing to do, it was obviously subjected to some abuse in it's life, probably not intentional, so having it back to a fully reliable guitar would be nothing short of amazing.
Show us all you have. Fascinated! Love that plank and really want to see the resurrection! It has so much funk quotient, all those repairs, done right, won't affect its vibe, just make it playable..which is what it's supposed to do!
As a luthier who has done repairs like this it is always painful to have to alter a vintage instrument from its original state. I greatly appreciate how you approached this. Not fixing the instrument for the sake of keeping it original kills the soul of the instrument. These guitars are not meant to sit in a case or on a wall in unplayable condition. Doing what it needed to get it up and going is always the best call in my opinion. Very cool video series on how you got this instument and the progress. Looking forward to seeing it once it is done.
Yes, definitely do a re-unboxing *AND* repair video if you can! Also, I came up playing guitar way back in the time when doing *ANYTHING* to a vintage guitar was considered heresy, but I’m talking about the late 60s through the 70s when virtually all vintage guitars were still playable. That being said, the problems with this one really interfere with the playability and can even cause much further damage if not attended to, so please, have at it! “Collecting” guitars by stashing them away, whether they’re playable or not should be considered heresy! Can’t wait to see and hear it!!
It would be extremely valuable information for the community if you could reveal a breakdown of the costs involved with your repairs. I find that, often, we are at the mercy of our tech as far as the cost of some repairs and having a good trusting relationship often gives us greater value for the money - but it would be helpful to have a comparison for rates since they are often unspoken and hard to find a "price sheet" for repairs. And nobody really price shops repairs - you just pay the piper that you trust the most whatever he says and be grateful that you get it back.
The prices of repair can be all over the place. Joel is my friend and he is giving my the deal of a lifetime. Complex repair costs from a well known luthier like this could be worth more than the price of the guitar. In the thousands of dollars.
I'm not a big fan of ancient instruments, but this one has such a hauntingly beautiful tone. I'd like to hear a before/after comparison when it's done.
Would love to see any info on the process...regardless of footage quality. I mean....really...the guitar was not exactly in hi-def condition to start, so it would be appropriate.
I bought the same guitar almost 20 years ago but when I got it there had been some mods done to it.Some were needed some were cosmetic and I actually was happy it was done because I was free to do what I wanted and not feel guilty about it not being original.
Every video you have done has been super relevant! And on top of that we get to hear your playing again when you demo these guitars so that is always such a treat!😊🎶🎸🔈🔉🔊💖

A friend of mine bought a 1966 Suzuki classical guitar for two dollars, the bridge was off so I glued it back on and restrung it with nylon strings and gave it back to him. He took the instrument home and brought it back next day, "Neck's too wide here you keep it." So I now have my own version of Trigger. The guitar is well built and tonally wonderful so it became my favorite of my collection which I play first every morning. Love your story Blessings.

Yes, yes. Lets see it when its complete. Would love to see and hear your friend's work. Its great that you want o keep the originality and history of the guitar. I just purchased a Gretsch from Goodwill. Took me three days just to clean it.
well hell yes we want to see the re-unboxing!

Agreed! I’m so pumped to see this!
It’s a blasphemy if you don’t...
