As an old folk guitar player, I have an appreciation for percussion. There isn't much percussion in a lot of folk music and when there is, it's way over the top. Too many washboard or rhythm bones players play like they are 1970's rock drummers. When what's really needed is someone to keep simple time, stay in the pocket and keep everyone together. I've got a brass washboard that says "Cutler Hardware Waterloo, Iowa" which went out of business in 1922. Tricked it out with a tuna can (sounds like a snare) and a peach can (sounds like a tom tom). Lookin' forward to learning some new tricks, 'cause the last thing our jam needs is another guitar player! LOL
Haha, exactly! I couldn't agree with you more. The percussionist should set the groove and help build and release the tension in a song. . . . And well why not, once a set, show off a little bit. . .
So Excited! I'm a drag queen who plays ukulele and I just got my washboard in the mail! I started playing spoons at home during covid and came across your video. Thanks for your videos--can't wait to dive in.
This is a fun video! I am a Washtub Bass player, own a few washboards, my favorite is a small handled one that I am able to wear at my side when playing the tub. Your advice to relax is the best!
Dude this is awesome. I’ve played in folk punk bands for a couples years a few years back. My son is 6 and just picking it up and he was more than stoked on your video. Thanks and I learned some stuff too. I had no idea variations on the same instrument existed globally. Sick vid man.
Thanks for your insight and tuition buddy. I used to love hearing my Uncle Pip play his old washboard here in the UK in the '60s and his harmonica too when I was a kid. Cheers, Clive - Spyda Music Productions.
I taught myself some things, and started making videos where I’m playing my washboard, but I still feel like I don’t really know wrought grooves or control. These videos are awesome! Thanks so much.
Hallelujah Brother!!! Thank you so much! I am having a skiffle epiphany and hungry to learn more about the entire vortex! I'm thinking of taking up the washboard and fascinated especially to find out about its use on plantations and in the Caribbean especially. You sound like the fellow for the job! Count me in!
I'm getting one to share with kids... and making a washboard bass. and buying spoons lol! Thanks for the intro! Definitely be checking out the rest of your lessons :)
The Cardenas Market Mexican grocery store chain has washboards for $13. I recently picked one up and added strap pegs to it so I can use a guitar strap.
This is amazing! Thank you! I've had a washboard hanging on my wall with the intention of someday learning and I think I'm gunna finally give it a go. Looking forward to your videos!
Glad it was helpful! Got a new video out today that is great for when you are starting out: Basics Part 2. I hope you like it and good luck on you washboard voyage!!
When you are just starting anything is good, just making noise is fun, I actually started with a coffee can. The best sounding boards are zinc, most people prefer the zinc king 701. You can find them on ebay or if you're lucky at tag sale or junk shop. Good luck. Have fun.
This is the best and most comprehensive Online Course on Washboardplaying. It doesn't get better than this. You got any Social Media? Do you play in some Bands I can check out?
The glass boards are better for washing than playing. Try and look for metal one, Zinc sounds the best. The cream of the crop is the Zinc king 701. You can find a bunch of them on ebay or get lucky at a flea market or tag sale.
I live in Quebec, Canada. Where can I get one???? I came across a bunch but they're all glass. I used to play when I was in highschool and I miss it dearly.
Such great videos! Thank you! I noticed the strap. Do you have it connected with guitar buttons and guitar strap on the right side, then under left arm and attached behind the washboard? Thank you.
In Ukrainian it is called a Zatula but Other names include rubal, rubel, kuchelka, kachanka, kachalka, rebra. In Poland it is called a Tarka, they even have a washboard festival in Poland called "Złota Tarka" or Golden Washboard.
Zinc king 701 is the best of the best. You can find them on ebay, perfect condition 701's can be a little expensive but they are much cheaper if they are worn out and beat up. This is great because the old beat up ones actually sound the best. Good luck!!
@@wesleymeatsuit4873 I prefer the size of a 701, but it's my opinion, here is an example of the great David Holt on a 703. ua-cam.com/video/PbOdgZyAEv4/v-deo.html
I lived in Berlin too and the washboard seems the perfect instrument for that town: cheap, proletarian, retro chic and cool. but dont play it with a bottle opener - bottle openers are deeply uncool in Berlin - no berliner ever opens a beer bottle with a bottle opener - use a lighter or a spoon etc or any other thing but not a bottle opener!

Nice intro video. I've got a vintage (mid-1940s) washboard on the way and a package of thimbles just arrived. Look forward to learning!

I love your series. Am up to session 7. Ordered a washboard. What do you use for thimbles? Maker? Sizes? materials?
just got taught wash board by Paul Reeves, or is it Keanu Rudd, either way i love it
I want to learn to play

I love this instrument. I have an authentic washboard with a glass surface. Is this type suitable?
The glass boards are better for washing than playing. Try and look for metal one, Zinc sounds the best. The cream of the crop is the Zinc king 701. You can find a bunch of them on ebay or get lucky at a flea market or tag sale.

No Cowbell?
If Bruce Dickinson says we need more cowbell, we give him more cowbell.
