Love it! I'm one of the weirdos who also loves the CRs and XP loss. Ollllld Schoooool. It's the one thing that absolutely kills new MMOs and modern EQ for me. Nothing matters in those games...
Okay.... your offhand comments while grinding are AMAZING!! I've been taking breaks from watching to this video because I'm laughing too much! I loved that you dropped all items on your to-do list when you found the Tyranical Checken Menace and made a bee line for it! And you were right.... he shoulda dropped something epic..... a Shiv or a blackjack maybe.... I mean don't all menaces carry blackjacks and shivs???
I can confirm that it's not about nostalgia. I never played EQ or Runescape or anything like them. My first "real" MMO was World of Warcraft. What I loved about it was the journey - going out into this big, unknown world, gaining levels, doing quests, slowly gearing up over time, spending hours in the same dungeon. There's a quote out there that, given enough time and a large enough player base, players will optimize the fun out of the game. And that's what we see with so many MMOs and games out there nowadays. It's kind of rough, if you stop and think about it, though. Game designers want a large player base, as player base = money. But, by making these games so approachable, and making the player base significantly larger, removing whatever friction that exists in the game causes players who *liked* that friction to get turned off. It's an interesting juxtaposition. Thanks to these videos, I'm semi-considering picking this up. What worries me personally is just that I already have another MMO I've devoted a significant amount of time to that I want to devote a significant amount of additional time to. But this is also scratching that journey itch that a lot of other MMO's don't have.
@@jaimerivera2382 A very interesting topic and insight! Thank you for sharing this. 🙏 I absolutely agree, players over a time period seem to chase the "meta-play" over the "fun-play" and as you said optimize out the fun. With difficulty comes the ability to fail and failing offers the options to give up or learn. Many will quit and few will learn. With quiting comes abandonment, and the devs can't have that so they loosen the reigns of failure and their game becomes too easy. Turning a proving ground into a Barbie party. Very cool topic of discussion. Thank you. 🍻

Glad to see you enjoying Pantheon, It's not quite I was thinking it would be, but I'm very intrigued. I do like your recommendations regarding maps. I would also like to add that I think it would be a good idea to have something like Sense Heading but for your corpse because I get lost a bit in the game lol.
@ Can’t wait! I just bought early access without realizing my computer is straight dog shit and won’t run it lol So I need to correct that but I’ll playing as well soon. Tell ya what need more people like you playing this game who enjoy the game but don’t take it too serious. MMO’s lose their fun when you get to that ultra-competitive stage.

While I like your ideas regarding a map I also really like to not have a map at all too. I absolutely disliked it at first but now that I've played quite a decent amount I realized that not having a map makes exploring a lot more fun to me. You pay waaay more attention to your surroundings and explore way more than you would if you had a map. Also you learn a lot more about the game world over time like where you can find certain mobs, dungeons or NPCs. Considering that we can climb and swim you can even find some decent shortcuts this way. A world just loses a lot of it's magic if you mindlessly run straight from point A to point B while looking at a map for half of your journey. It definitely has it's downsides but also a fair amount of benefits and given that this game isn't your typical "rush to endgame and quit a week later" I don't mind to lose some time here and there due to not having a map. Anyways, great video!
@@Tenroh92 I love it! Mastering the wild, seeking fun and exploring new places. A map does remove some of that enjoyment and can create the A to B scenario. I wish there was a way to appease both a lore friendly and engaging map system, but also leave room for the thrill of the unknown. Like if a Cartography system only existed for dungeons or something, I'm not sure, I'm just tossing darts in the dark I suppose 😂 Also, thank you.
As we all know at this point, I'm really decisive on picking a character. I've done this beginning stuff 11 times now (some redo after switching servers) and yet I am still entertained. :)
I do not believe there is anywhere you can go to not be hit by your target once engaged. I tested yesterday by aggroing a MoB and then climbing up a large mountain. I stayed in combat when I reached the top, and after about 5 seconds, the mob teleported to my location on the mountain. Maybe he climbed....who knows.

Heya brochacho old school VZ player here. I am so excited for when the PvP Test servers drop 🙂
I totally agree about the map. There is no reason, whatsoever, to not have one. I don’t care if it shows where you are. It’s not hard to read a map.
I really really like the idea of making it a skill in-game and then having interesting versions of the map floating around.
As long as they do not add your characters location to the map, there is no downside.
Pretty sure they will eventually have static maps available as you enter new areas down the line
