I feel so lucky that I got to see her perform this role in London in 2016. I could not help but sob during this song because I connect to it so much and I was finally seeing a performer I NEVER expected to see live. Its a memory i'll cherish forever.
The first time I heard anyone sing a Jason Robert Brown song was Sam, she must have been about 14 or 15 years old and did 'Stars and the Moon' at our local singing festival. She has such a fantastic voice for his music.
My best friend had a little situation At the end of our senior year And like a shot, she and Mitchell got married that summer Carolann getting bigger every minute Thinking, "What am I doing here?" While Mitchell's out every night Being a heavy-metal drummer They got a little cute house on a little cute street With a crucifix on the door Mitchell got a job at the record store in the mall Just the typical facts of a typical life in a town on the Eastern Shore I thought about what I wanted It wasn't like that at all Made Carolann a cute baby sweater Thinking "I can do better than that" In a year or so, I moved to the city Thinking "What have I got to lose?" Got a room, got a cat, and got twenty pounds thinner Met a guy in a class I was taking who you might say Looked like Tom Cruise He wouldn't leave me alone 'less I went with him to dinner And I guess he was cute And I guess he was sweet ANd I guess he was good in bed I gave up my life for a better part of a year And so I'm starting to think that this maybe might work And the second it entered my head He needed to take some time off Focus on his "career" He blew me off with a heartfelt letter I thought "I can do better than that" You don't have to get a haircute You don't have to change your shoes You don't have to like Duran Duran Just love me You don't have to put the seat down You don't have to watch the news You dont' have to learn to tango You don't have to eat prosciutto You don't have to change a thing Just stay with me I want you and you and nothing but you Miles and piles of you Finally I'll have something worthwhile To think about each morning You and you and nothing but you No substitution will do Nothing but fresh, undiluted and pure Top of the line and totally mine! I don't need any lifetime commitments I don't need to get hitched tonight I don't want to throw up your walls and defenses I don't mean to put on any pressure But I know what a thing is right And I spend every day reconfiguring my sense When we get to my house, take a look at that town Take a look at how far I've gone I will never go back Never look back anymoure And it feels like my life led right to your side And will keep me there from now on Think about what you wanted Think about what could be THink about how I love you Say you'll move in with me Think of what's great about me and you Think of the bullsh*t we've both been through Think of what's past because we can do better! We can do better! We can do better than that! We can do better than that!
She's speaking them a little more than most, but it sounds just fine. She speak-sings a lot in this which is different than usual, but it isn't bad at all. Just a different interpretation. Neither is right or wrong.
Came to this video from Cynthia Erivo preforming the same song and wow, this is SO disappointing in comparison bahaha. Sit down Barks. Erivo owns this one.
Woah it’s so weird hearing her with an American accent
Have you heard her on the Pretty Woman Cast Album?? :)
Listen to the Pretty Woman Cast album.
2:03 the way she says heartfelt gives me chills
Mia Avila I love your profile photo
Mia Avila it reminds me of Barrett Wilbert Weed😂
Loopy_ Lou you are so right it sounds exactly like Barrett
The fact that there's no video of her in the role is a crime! I love Samantha and TL5Y!
okay but i need a studio version of the entirety of The Last Five Years with Samantha Barks as Cathy
You and me both
I know I'm kind of off topic but do anyone know a good site to stream new movies online ?
@Trevor Trent lately I have been using flixzone. Just search on google for it :)
@Asa Ryland yea, been watching on Flixzone for years myself :)
@Asa Ryland Thank you, I signed up and it seems like a nice service :D I really appreciate it !!

in love with this girl
I love Samantha Barks she is so inspiring and she's just amazing
The first time I heard anyone sing a Jason Robert Brown song was Sam, she must have been about 14 or 15 years old and did 'Stars and the Moon' at our local singing festival. She has such a fantastic voice for his music.
2:04 the way she says "heartfelt" sounds like Barrett Wilbert Weed woah
I AM SO IN LOVE WITH HER VOICE
I actually really love her version a lot
Who wrote this? Jason Brown?
Leif Yep :)
I loved her rendition omg
Oh my, I think this is the best I've ever heard this song
Her pipes are priceless. What. A. Voice. #legend
Sam has such a great voice, would dig seeing her in a small venue such as this. Her 25th anniversary @OZ Eponine is the best Eponine ever
gosh, this is not the Samantha I'm used to but I love it. I would have never expected her in this role, but she's amazing!
she was Cathy in a London production in 2016 and she was AMAZING
This was amazingggggg. I wasn't a fan of this song until I heard her version. Love it now!!
SHE’S SO CUTE OMG
What a sweetheart Samatha is
She is incredible!
SHE IS INCREDIBLE
why is she perfect for every single role on Broadway?
The woman in the row ahead was GETTIN’ IT 😂
Oh she put on an accent
Her belts are so magical..
Okay but why is this better than the other three versions
SwedishNerd I feel like the other three voices sound very shrilling and piercing for me so I really like this version a lot
Agreed!
Given that that tempo was so fast, I admire how this pianist totally faked it so incredibly well.
the combination i didn’t know i needed
thank you so much for sharing!!
Someone get this girl a show!!!!! She has clearly been taking voice lessons and accent coaching! Amazing!!!!
aromaticchicken she played cathy in "the last five years" on the west end in 2016
She'll be in Pretty Woman on Broadway later this year!
She's Eponine😂
aromaticchicken she’s now on Broadway, but she was a big star the West End/British theatre years before that
aromaticchicken Sis where have u been
Samantha this is for you🌹
Robin ❤️
My best friend had a little situation
At the end of our senior year
And like a shot, she and Mitchell got married that summer
Carolann getting bigger every minute
Thinking, "What am I doing here?"
While Mitchell's out every night
Being a heavy-metal drummer
They got a little cute house on a little cute street
With a crucifix on the door
Mitchell got a job at the record store in the mall
Just the typical facts of a typical life in a town on the Eastern Shore
I thought about what I wanted
It wasn't like that at all
Made Carolann a cute baby sweater
Thinking "I can do better than that"
In a year or so, I moved to the city
Thinking "What have I got to lose?"
Got a room, got a cat, and got twenty pounds thinner
Met a guy in a class I was taking who you might say
Looked like Tom Cruise
He wouldn't leave me alone 'less I went with him to dinner
And I guess he was cute
And I guess he was sweet
ANd I guess he was good in bed
I gave up my life for a better part of a year
And so I'm starting to think that this maybe might work
And the second it entered my head
He needed to take some time off
Focus on his "career"
He blew me off with a heartfelt letter
I thought "I can do better than that"
You don't have to get a haircute
You don't have to change your shoes
You don't have to like Duran Duran
Just love me
You don't have to put the seat down
You don't have to watch the news
You dont' have to learn to tango
You don't have to eat prosciutto
You don't have to change a thing
Just stay with me
I want you and you and nothing but you
Miles and piles of you
Finally I'll have something worthwhile
To think about each morning
You and you and nothing but you
No substitution will do
Nothing but fresh, undiluted and pure
Top of the line and totally mine!
I don't need any lifetime commitments
I don't need to get hitched tonight
I don't want to throw up your walls and defenses
I don't mean to put on any pressure
But I know what a thing is right
And I spend every day reconfiguring my sense
When we get to my house, take a look at that town
Take a look at how far I've gone
I will never go back
Never look back anymoure
And it feels like my life led right to your side
And will keep me there from now on
Think about what you wanted
Think about what could be
THink about how I love you
Say you'll move in with me
Think of what's great about me and you
Think of the bullsh*t we've both been through
Think of what's past because we can do better!
We can do better!
We can do better than that!
We can do better than that!
when will she be back at 54 below?
The piano player is distracting. But this woman can SANG!!!
trizzytrix the pianist is not great.
Why does the pianist hate her?
I was 15 seconds in and already liked it better than Anna Kendrick’s version. Now imagine SAMANTHA and Jeremy in the movie!
AHHHH HER AMERICAN ACCENT!!!
Please tell there will be a CD!
I'm jealous of people who sit right in front of her singing.
What's the club it?!
i get that she's trying to be different by changing the way she sings the yous at 2:44 but it just sounds off to me
angelasings24 what do you mean? That's not a different way to sing them, they usually sound like that
She's speaking them a little more than most, but it sounds just fine. She speak-sings a lot in this which is different than usual, but it isn't bad at all. Just a different interpretation. Neither is right or wrong.
who does she sound like? Her accent sounds exactly like a voice I've heard before but I can't place it
someone in the comments earlier says Barrett Wilbert Weed? idk if you agree
She lowkey sounds like I idina
Kinda like Lindsay Mendez id say, but also like Barrett Wilbert Weed
i listened to Anna Kendrick's version for the first time and I really thought its 'I can do better than not' all along 😂
Came to this video from Cynthia Erivo preforming the same song and wow, this is SO disappointing in comparison bahaha. Sit down Barks. Erivo owns this one.
Yaaaassssssssss
Then…go back to Cynthia’s and don’t spread negativity? God
@@unicornalq11 *spreads negativity all over the place*
Why she so pitchy though?
Okay it was only the first verse. A bit hammy though.
I think it is that she is speak-singing a lot of it which makes some notes sound off, but she isn't pitchy.
No feeling! Poor voice! What?
