  • Endurance issues on the oboe are complicated, and can be caused by lots of things. But reeds are definitely a factor! The Five Minute Reedmaker has some suggestions.
I'll discuss more factors in my free workshop Saturday January 25, 2025. You can register for free and get the replay at jennetingle.ki...

Very much appreciate you showing off a specific trouble you personally had in your personal reed case. Also seeing the corners, overlap, and uneven throat on your recent reed makes me feel so much better about the state of my personal reed case--my own reeds are always in a bit worse shape than what I give my students' 😅

Oh, my own reeds are TERRIBLE looking! Because they aren't for looking at, they are for playing on. No shame. Let's normalize ugly reeds, as long as they WORK and get you where you want to go!

I usually get tired on a reed that resists closing too much. A reed can be pretty open but still close easily. But usually for me, if a reed wants to stay too open while playing, and requires too much muscle to manipulate the opening, that’s when I get tired. The issue is, I don’t always know where to turn to close the opening, or to make the opening more easy to collapse. Sometimes it’s the blend of the tip to the heart, sometimes it’s too much spine (like in your video), sometimes it’s not enough taken out of the windows. I even sometimes desperately attack the base of the reed near the string. But in general, reeds which are more closed from the get-go are ideal for endurance for me. If I could wave my magic wand in reed making, it would be to have a consistently (relatively) closed tip opening. Great video, Jennet!
