Agreed, I tried one and found the taste/texture almost identical to blueline tile. My issue with them is that after you cut out the strip of pin bones that runs almost the entire length of the fish, you end up with very odd portions of meat that are challenging to find a good purpose for. If you removed those pin bones with tweezers it wouldn't be an issue though
A short heavy bent butt is pretty much the standard for the planer rod. The rod isn't the important part of the equation, just need a reel with a lot of drag to hold the planer
