Demi Lovato, despite her mainstream popularity, has always been criminally underrated but believe me when I say most of the songs, particularly on the confident album, were super underrated and ignored and it's so unfair. The vocals especially in this album were top tier and it was a shame some of the songs weren't released as singles.
totally agree. It's such a shame that 25 won Best Pop Vocal Album that year, ok... we're talking about Adele, but godamn Confident is vocally monumental. Being honest, Adele brought the same thing in 25, that she did in 21. Confident was a tremendous surprise, Demi surprised everybody, not even with her vocals, but with her lyrics too.
She did a live performance of Father, and it was absolutely stunning. Highly recommend!

As a lover of Demi's music for well over a decade, I'm grateful for your reactions because they remind me of how awesome and emotive her music has always been! 😭 I end up relistening to older songs that I've forgotten about in the last couple years or so and get to love them all over again.

Oof Lionheart hits such a soft spot for me - the day that she overdosed I put on a playlist of my fave Demi songs before getting in the shower and it was the first song to come on. I just cried my eyes out in the shower and sang along. This was when it still wasn't 100% sure if she'd pull through or not. It still strikes a chord with me today. Such a beautiful and underrated album overall

Ok so you are about to hit a... slow spot?.. in demis career? "Demi" does have some greats like heart attack, made in the USA, and Neon Lights but its mostly bad and tough to get through... and "Unbroken" has her worst song ever ("all night long" which was clearly her record label trying to mainstream the shit out of her) so if I were you id consider consolidating your reaction of both of these little career blips into 1 video. After that, youll get to "Here we go again" and "Dont forget", which are CLASSICS
Demi is my favorite album. "Two Pieces", "In Case", "Nightingale", "Shouldn't come back" and "Warrior" are amazing. I would argue that "Neon light" is the only bad song on that album 🤣🤣. That's proof that everyone's tastes are different 🤷🏻♂️.
PS: "You're My Only Shorty" is way worse than "All night long" in my opinion. But even Unbroken has amazing tracks like "Fix a Heart" (the song that really made of a fan of them) "Lightweight" and "For the love of a daughter".

Regarding the difference in sound in her vocals compared to later projects, it's a matter of vocal technique, actually. I'll elaborate a bit.
Your voice has different registers. Most singers use chest voice and head voice. Chest voice is the register most people use for speaking and is what's more common to hear in a song. Head voice, on the other hand, is a register that has a more pure and light sound, and singers usually use it to sing higher notes, since singing higher notes in your chest voice can be very harmful if you don't do it right.
When you study vocal technique you will usually learn how to notice in your own voice when you're using chest voice and head voice, and to control when to use one or the other, since they allow you to express different things due to the differences in sound. Once you've developed your chest and head voice, you will learn about mixed register, which is sort of a bridge between the two, hence the name. Using your mixed register, you can access higher notes maintaining a tone that's still somewhat heavy and very similar to your chest voice, but it lightens the effort and you're at a much lower risk of hurting your vocal chords, giving you longevity, which is what all singers should aspire to have in their careers.
Up until this album, Confident, Demi usually used chest voice most of the time, which produced a heavier sound, but was also a lot riskier in terms of vocal health, and it wasn't sustainable. For Tell Me You Love Me and all the other albums after, she started to use mixed register, which produced a very different sound. Great still, of course, but you can tell it's a lighter and more elastic sound, compared to her chest voice, which is a lot sturdier, if that makes sense.
Anyway, that's why lol I'm always fascinated with these things and loved that you noticed the change

I love that you had less goosebumps in this album compared to TMYLM, DWTDTAOSO and Holy Fvck, this album is the one I like the least because I don't feel Demi being herself on most of the songs (although she nails it on the ones she was actually being herself)

DEMI album reaction please! Wildfire and Father are personal favorites from this album. The whistle note tho. And i love warrior. Its really one of their most emotional songs.

I remember Stone Cold and Mr. Hughes being my favorite tracks at the time of the release, but now I have solidified Wildfire and Lionheart as my favorites, not just from this album, but as two of my favorites songs of Demi's entire discography. Btw, I don't know if Mr. Hughes was wrote by Demi, but it's definitely someone Demi knows and had feelings for, I think in childhood. I remember some interview where she spoke about it.
Confident is not the best album for me, but it divides her discography, now sounding more mature and having more advanced vocal techniques (whistle note!!!). It's obvious for us now that their team wanted to give them a more mature, womanly image. The way she lost weight in this era is insane, she basically lived at the gym 😔

Yes, Demi wrote Mr. Hughes by herself. I think she wrote every song by herself that is autobiographical.

About the whistle note in Wildfire, it was Demi, but she's never done it live because it's a super challenging note for her. And I guess (please, keep in mind this is just speculation) they're not able to do whistle notes anymore because of the OD. None of the songs that came after it had whistle notes on them and I believe none will ever have'em again. It's great that no other parts of her vocal range were harmed due to the overdose though
