It's straight out of the book and tbh they made it better in the show. She's at rock bottom, she asks Colin because she knows he is her friend, that she can ask him something this sensitive, that he won't laugh at her. She trusts him. It was really moving, emotional and tbh a unique first kiss. Loved it. Cried. Would recommend. 10/10.

I actually liked the way they reworked it from the book. In the show it is more of a rock bottom from her circumstances and not from being a tired old spinster of 28 years. To me, the first kiss was hotter than the carriage scene kiss - although the carriage scene "feelings" confession was nice.
Idc what people think , Pen was brave for asking Colin to kiss her and take charge of her life for once . The banter between them before it felt so natural. Colin’s little comment about her already being dead felt so genuine. He’s trying so hard to be logical with Pen and she shuts that down immediately and just asks. Sometimes the bravest thing someone can do is ask the question they are most afraid of.
The designer said they are making her look like a caged bird and showing her house as well like a mausoleum. Since we know see why she's the way she is. so her outfits are supposed to portray that hence big sleeves and feathers

I’m gonna be contrarian and defend the ‘begging’. a lot of people projecting or using modern day sensibilities to analyze it, meanwhile I see it as pen finally being brave and asking for something she wants. She’s not expecting a yes, but she’s finally just declaring things she desires: Affection. Everyone is disorienting themselves because they always try to conflate one thing to the next like this what if? ‘well, it wouldn’t be cute if your best guy friend guilted you into a pity kiss, would it?’ One of these things are not like the other ~ If you can reduce this situation to that, idk what to tell you. Colin hesitates because of social etiquette: You can’t just kiss an unmarried woman of society. You are ‘ruining’ her and compromising yadi yada. He respects pen to not want to risk that. He’s not ignorant to her delicate situation. How she’s been forced on the shelf and her wish for kindness, love and freedom is looking grim. She’s lost hope. I love the fake Casanova Colin plot, as well. It’s realistic to his situation and mirroring his brothers to feel like he belongs.
I know people are complaining about the begging and kissing but we have to remember that it happened in the book. Pen was actually 25 to 27 years old in the book and hadn't kiss anyone so she literally asked Colin to kiss her.
But the begging and kissing here makes much more sense than the books IMO specially the build up to it. Colin's random outburst leading to the kiss in the books was very off tempo compared to here when you can see Pen fully just gave up on everything for herself.

The context of how it happens, while more dramatic, works better (that's basically what you said lol), especially for someone who's her age. I do get if some people don't agree with this tho, but that's my interpretation as someone whose the same age as Pen in the show rn- given that both of them are younger in this version, I am interested in seeing how Colin reacts to finding out Whistledown's identity, that's gonna be... interesting (tho i hope he doesn't act as intensely as he does in the book)

Today we can call it irrational and immature for a 27 year old woman to beg for a kiss from her male friend but she must have felt really vulnerable and impatient to ask such a thing even though it was scandalous. Also it's a beautifully done book adaptation so Shonda had to respect the book by keeping that particular scene.
I realized on my second watch (though I knew she was Violet's foil) that she is pragmatic while Violet is idealistic. Portia's attempt to make Pen feel better is FAR better than what it could've been which was nothing especially because we see she pauses before speaking again and even after she knew her daughter needed more. Honestly...such a complex character.

The kind of talk where he would be like "Lately I've been feeling wierd around Penelope. Am I crazy or I might have feelings for her? How did you know you loved dad?". It kind of happened too fast and it felt more as if Penelope was more into it than Colin, which is wierd, because I would expect her to be more like "I can't, I have to marry and have no time for fantasies". For example when she held his hand I was hoping that he would look at her mesmerized and she would be the one interrupting the moment, but it was the opposite, which was wierd, since I assumend Colin would lose control more at that moment since he isn't aware of his feelings like Pen. Same happened with the kiss scene. I think it was unnceseary. It would've been better that she confessed her concerns of "I'm scared of dying without being kissed" and maybe then the thought of kissing her might cross his mind, maybe they could have an "almost kiss" but being stopped by something external and that could've been enough for him to start to have dreams about Penelope. The kiss felt forced and I didn't like that it was the "trigger" for his feelings. Like, boy, there's so much more about this girl you should fall for. I think they really could even made a scene where he realizes his feelings by rereding old Penelope's letters and smiling like an idiot while doing so. They have so much history. They could put flashbacks even (in other seasons they did and it worked very well). This season we had the two characters with more history and we didn't get even one flashback to their childhood. I know we still have half season left but at least they could've given us Colin's perspective before getting with Penelope (when they met, how they used to play, etc), and in the other half of the season Penelope's perspective (with some flashback of maybe when she fell in love). Like I literally don't know if Colin is in love or if he just thinks he is because of the hormonal boost of the kiss, which doesn't make sense either because technically he did already kiss and did more with other girls. I have the feeling that the writers are so used to do the "enemies to lovers" troupe, that they actually don't know how to properly create a "friends to lovers" story. The fear of rejection, the existencial crisis when you realize you might like them as something more, the replaying on your head of the memories you created together, the constant denial of the feelings, because you're scared things, might get messed up, the pain it causes you the possibility of losing not only your loved one but also your dear friend, the fact that you can't help but being mesmerized by them now at things you didn't noticed before or things you noticed but that suddenly you find fascinating, the admiration, mutual respect, caring a love....They could've done all this push and pull , "will they, won't they" and they didn't. I don't even think Colin knows who he is anymore, which to me is even worse because it seems as if he needed to be confused to be with Penelope because otherwise he wouldn't fall for her. And frankly, the excuse he gave her for his behaivior last season was not that good "I'm not that man anymore" equates to "I've never really respected you until now", basically it states that their friendship was a lie, that he didn't respect her before, which is not true based on the rest of his actions (asking her to dance, valuing her opinion, saving her from shame, protecting her, etc). He could've said "I'm sorry. I felt pressured to be like everybody else and I said something I didn't really think or meant. I was trying to impress the wrong people" which I think it was true; a lot of people especially when they are young try to "be cool" to get along with the "cool" kids, and Penelope would relate to it (since it was also part of the growth of her character this season), it would've brought them closer. Also this season he was trying to be something he is not, so it could be a lesson for him to learn as well. They literally had all the story built up, they just needed to pick things from other seasons and the characters and develop them, but the execution failed. I also believe we needed at least 2 seasons to develop this two properly. They have too much history for one season only, unless we only got them on screen.Third season: them getting together. Fourth season: him finding out about Pen's secret. There was enough material. And if they didn't want to split the seasons, they could do 18 episodes this season, that could also work and it would've been better for a "Part 1" and "Part 2".

I was even expecting her to call him out more on his "new persona", she seemed like she hated it the first episode and honestly? What she wrote about him as Lady Whistledown was true, but then she regreted it which was wierd, I mean I get she she'd regret publishing It, but saying "she was wrong" wasn't accurate, I was expecting her to ask and question him like "Pretending to do this, saying something I don't really think or would do... Is that honest? Wouldn't that make me attract suitors who don't love me, but the persona I created? Does it make you happy being like that?". He claims he's being himself and I never saw him more out of character.
Epic analysis. I actually feel like you thought this through more than the screenwriters did this season. You clearly understand where the characters are coming from very well. Side note: if I remember correctly, in their book, one of the main bonding elements is the fact that C is struggling to find his writers confidence and is not even sure if it is any good. Decent amount of the shift in their relationship is the fact that he realizes how much they have in common and how much he enjoys her input and encouragement. I feel like in the show, they kinda used this up in previous season, so now they were looking for some new boost into their dynamics. I agree with you, it comes of a as shallow and flat. Meh. Again, I condone, your comment is on point and I REALLY wish someone in Netflix would tell the showrunners to work even better with source material (pls feel free to apple for that job 😊😊😊). Bridgerton book series have some questionable moments and in some cases the show goes a long way to improve, but regarding this couple specifically, what we got so far is a third reformed rake in a row and personally I am not that impressed. (And so far, they seem to have been leaning in this direction with Benedict too, so I have my doubts...)

I guess I may be struggling with this version of Pen because she is more based in the books. Maybe that is the main difference? Their story begins later on in their lives, she is out for many season, he has been travelling for years, they mostly communicate through letters. He is looking for a purpose in his life (at that point he envies his order brothers having some purpose in their lives - managing the estate for A, Benedict is an acknowledged painter already). Pen has a stable career as Whistledown and has really somewhat made peace with being a spinster and definitely is acutely aware of Colin's true friendship but lack if attaction. She knows who she is. He does so too, but wishes his life to have more purpose. If he has any "exotic experiences" from abroad, he is nit so crude about it. I was most disappointed at the exerpt from Colin's diaries that she gets to read in the series. In the book she gives him credit for his description of a setting somewhere in Greene and how well he communicates the atmosphere to readers that has never been there. In the show... well you saw where it went. Was not impressed. Overall, what we get in the show is more erratic energy, they are still young and trying to find their ground. There is a lot of conflict involved. Their relationship has absolutely different curve. And in this case I must say I preferred the book.

These characters know each other since childhood, and their love did not appear from one moment to another, it has been growing throughout the years but only Penelope is aware of that, Colin is oblivious to that, but he has always had feelings for her, there are multiple scenes in the other two seasons where we can see that. The focus of this season is not their love developing, the point of the season is first: growing individually, finding themselves and being who they really are. Pollin's first kiss would've been amazing IF THE LEAD UP WAS BETTER. This whole lead up to the kiss was rushed because they only made 8 episodes i bet and they needed something for the veiwers to talk about to build anticipation for part 2. I hate calling "seasons" 8 eisodes. A season is at least 12 episodes.
I don't think Colin actually wants to ruin Lady Whistledown's life. He has concerns for the fact that it nearly ruined his sister yes, but Colin often likes to jump in and play the hero in these situations. Think Miss Thompson, the rubies, the hot air balloon. Colin jumps into action. After he discovers Pen is Lady W and realises she did those things in order to save their family and his sister. She literally outed Marina as Lady W, after trying to tell Colin over and over again that she was using him. He didn't listen and would have ended up locked in a marriage due to social convention. Pen didn't want him to be trapped. As for Eloise, the Queen believed Eloise to be Lady Whistledown, and was going to HAVE HER TRIED FOR TREASON. Which would have scandolised her family FAR more, and put Eloise in JAIL. Pen had to write about Eloise going to the rebel speeches in order to SAVE her. Pen literally saved him and his family, using Lady W. I think Mr. Bridgerton is going to be shocked at first, then become extremely impressed with his wife to be.
I know this is just P1, and I KNOW this season is about Pen and Colin… but KATHANI SHARMA BRIDGERTON- she looks like a goddess and I cannot blame Anthony for his feral energy in S2 and we needed MORE. I want a whole season (show) of JUST Kate and Anthony. Or just Kate, I’m not picky.

For example when she held his hand I was hoping that he would look at her mesmerized and she would be the one interrupting the moment, but it was the opposite, which was wierd, since I assumend Colin would lose control more at that moment since he isn't aware of his feelings like Pen. Same happened with the kiss scene. I think it was unnceseary. It would've been better that she confessed her concerns of "I'm scared of dying without being kissed" and maybe then the thought of kissing her might cross his mind, maybe they could have an "almost kiss" but being stopped by something external and that could've been enough for him to start to have dreams about Penelope. The kiss felt forced and I didn't like that it was the "trigger" for his feelings. Like, boy, there's so much more about this girl you should fall for. I think they really could even made a scene where he realizes his feelings by rereding old Penelope's letters and smiling like an idiot while doing so. They have so much history. They could put flashbacks even (in other seasons they did and it worked very well). This season we had the two characters with more history and we didn't get even one flashback to their childhood. I know we still have half season left but at least they could've given us Colin's perspective before getting with Penelope (when they met, how they used to play, etc), and in the other half of the season Penelope's perspective (with some flashback of maybe when she fell in love). Like I literally don't know if Colin is in love or if he just thinks he is because of the hormonal boost of the kiss, which doesn't make sense either because technically he did already kiss and did more with other girls. I have the feeling that the writers are so used to do the "enemies to lovers" troupe, that they actually don't know how to properly create a "friends to lovers" story. The fear of rejection, the existencial crisis when you realize you might like them as something more, the replaying on your head of the memories you created together, the constant denial of the feelings, because you're scared things, might get messed up, the pain it causes you the possibility of losing not only your loved one but also your dear friend, the fact that you can't help but being mesmerized by them now at things you didn't noticed before or things you noticed but that suddenly you find fascinating, the admiration, mutual respect, caring a love....They could've done all this push and pull , "will they, won't they" and they didn't. I don't even think Colin knows who he is anymore, which to me is even worse because it seems as if he needed to be confused to be with Penelope because otherwise he wouldn't fall for her. And frankly, the excuse he gave her for his behaivior last season was not that good "I'm not that man anymore" equates to "I've never really respected you until now", basically it states that their friendship was a lie, that he didn't respect her before, which is not true based on the rest of his actions (asking her to dance, valuing her opinion, saving her from shame, protecting her, etc). He could've said "I'm sorry. I felt pressured to be like everybody else and I said something I didn't really think or meant. I was trying to impress the wrong people" which I think it was true; a lot of people especially when they are young try to "be cool" to get along with the "cool" kids, and Penelope would relate to it (since it was also part of the growth of her character this season), it would've brought them closer. Also this season he was trying to be something he is not, so it could be a lesson for him to learn as well. They literally had all the story built up, they just needed to pick things from other seasons and the characters and develop them, but the execution failed. I also believe we needed at least 2 seasons to develop this two properly. They have too much history for one season only, unless we only got them on screen.Third season: them getting together. Fourth season: him finding out about Pen's secret. There was enough material. And if they didn't want to split the seasons, they could do 18 episodes this season, that could also work and it would've been better for a "Part 1" and "Part 2".

I was even expecting her to call him out more on his "new persona", she seemed like she hated it the first episode and honestly? What she wrote about him as Lady Whistledown was true, but then she regreted it which was wierd, I mean I get she she'd regret publishing It, but saying "she was wrong" wasn't accurate, I was expecting her to ask and question him like "Pretending to do this, saying something I don't really think or would do... Epic analysis. I actually feel like you thought this through more than the screenwriters did this season. You clearly understand where the characters are coming from very well. Side note: if I remember correctly, in their book, one of the main bonding elements is the fact that C is struggling to find his writers confidence and is not even sure if it is any good. Decent amount of the shift in their relationship is the fact that he realizes how much they have in common and how much he enjoys her input and encouragement. I feel like in the show, they kinda used this up in previous season, so now they were looking for some new boost into their dynamics. I agree with you, it comes of a as shallow and flat. Meh.
Again, I condone, your comment is on point and I REALLY wish someone in Netflix would tell the showrunners to work even better with source material (pls feel free to apple for that job 😊😊😊). Bridgerton book series have some questionable moments and in some cases the show goes a long way to improve, but regarding this couple specifically, what we got so far is a third reformed rake in a row and personally I am not that impressed. (And so far, they seem to have been leaning in this direction with Benedict too, so I have my doubts...)

Maybe that is the main difference? Their story begins later on in their lives, she is out for many season, he has been travelling for years, they mostly communicate through letters. He is looking for a purpose in his life (at that point he envies his order brothers having some purpose in their lives - managing the estate for A, Benedict is an acknowledged painter already). Pen has a stable career as Whistledown and has really somewhat made peace with being a spinster and definitely is acutely aware of Colin's true friendship but lack if attaction. She knows who she is. He does so too, but wishes his life to have more purpose. If he has any "exotic experiences" from abroad, he is nit so crude about it. I was most disappointed at the exerpt from Colin's diaries that she gets to read in the series. In the book she gives him credit for his description of a setting somewhere in Greene and how well he communicates the atmosphere to readers that has never been there. In the show... well you saw where it went. Was not impressed.
Overall, what we get in the show is more erratic energy, they are still young and trying to find their ground. There is a lot of conflict involved. Their relationship has absolutely different curve. And in this case I must say I preferred the book.
Lmao what you guys don’t get it’s that this isn’t a love story like Kanthony or the Duke and Daphne. These characters know each other since childhood, and their love did not appear from one moment to another, it has been growing throughout the years but only Penelope is aware of that, Colin is oblivious to that, but he has always had feelings for her, there are multiple scenes in the other two seasons where we can see that. The focus of this season is not their love developing, the point of the season is first: growing individually, finding themselves and being who they really are. And second, Colin realizing his feelings for Penelope while also finding out who he is.

I don't think Colin actually wants to ruin Lady Whistledown's life. He has concerns for the fact that it nearly ruined his sister yes, but Colin often likes to jump in and play the hero in these situations. Think Miss Thompson, the rubies, the hot air balloon. Colin jumps into action.
After he discovers Pen is Lady W and realises she did those things in order to save their family and his sister. She literally outed Marina as Lady W, after trying to tell Colin over and over again that she was using him. He didn't listen and would have ended up locked in a marriage due to social convention. Pen didn't want him to be trapped.
As for Eloise, the Queen believed Eloise to be Lady Whistledown, and was going to HAVE HER TRIED FOR TREASON. Which would have scandolised her family FAR more, and put Eloise in JAIL.
Pen had to write about Eloise going to the rebel speeches in order to SAVE her. Pen literally saved him and his family, using Lady W. I think Mr. Bridgerton is going to be shocked at first, then become extremely impressed with his wife to be.
I know this is just P1, and I KNOW this season is about Pen and Colin… but KATHANI SHARMA BRIDGERTON- she looks like a goddess and I cannot blame Anthony for his feral energy in S2 and we needed MORE. I want a whole season (show) of JUST Kate and Anthony. Or just Kate, I’m not picky.
