Welcome To The Basement" is a show about watching, discussing and having fun with movies. None of the discussion or riffing is planned ahead of time.
The movie announced on Facebook before every new episode. We do discuss the entire movie, including the ending, so if you want to avoid spoilers, watch the movie first.
Dude's this show is so enjoyable and comforting.
Flagg? It's fitting that you grace us with your presence as the boys discuss your first appearance on our level of the Tower, sai. Hail Discordia, He Who Walks Behind The Rows.
Totally. Most comfy show on UA-cam, and it's also fan-tastic for picking up movie trivia.
Instablaster.
If virginity didn't prevail, it's possible that the sequel would be titled, 'Son of a Beach'.
🙂
Funny that Craig brought up "Lolita", since in the movie Marianne refers to the professor dating Dolores as "Lolita business".
Also, Lilly Dache was a well-known milliner (hat maker) in the fifties and sixties. Some of her creations could be quite elaborate, hence the name drop in the movie.
Was anybody else shocked to their very core when Big Daddy's hat went up and it was Vincent mutherlovin' Price? Most effective jumpscare I've ever seen in a move.
The grammies and the ho-dads will never appreciate the coolness of this series.
That's grimmies, not grammies.
@@themoviedealers Actually, it's gremmies.
@@themoviedealers Clearly I'm not cool enough.
Vincent Price?!??!!
I gotta be honest I wasn't expecting that.
Big Daddy Energy
Look up "The Wild Weird World of Dr. Goldfoot" and you'll still be surprised even after seeing him in "Beach Party".
that face was the only thrill of the whole thing.
"The Professor and Marianne. . .here" @ 13:24- Wow, good call!
Oh my god. Hearing Matt do his Cowardly Lion impression makes me so wish and hope that he has played that part on stage. And if he hasn't I hope he does xo
Seeing this makes me want to go skeet surfin.
Makes me want to go Back To The Beach.
A fellow Top Secret fan I see.
I think that laptop was the top of an open cooler. Either that or time travellers are at this beach party.
at 4:41 you can see it's a dainty little suitcase for female stuff.
Craig's reaction to hitting himself with a Frisbee is absolutely classic.
"Surf" - Craig 2019
Does Charlie surf?
The cowardly lion sent me over the edge 😂😂😂😂
I chuckled at the line “I forgot to carry the two”. Another great episode. Thanks Matt and Craig. (And Tona).
I hope you guys understand how much better my Friday is when a new episode comes out!
Fun facts: Harvey Lembeck reprised the role of Eric Von Zipper in 'Beach Blanket Bingo' and 'How to Stuff a Wild Bikini'. He was also in Thomas Magnum's favorite movie 'Stalag 17'.
I never would have guessed that Eric Von Zipper was also "Sugar Lips" Shapiro.
Still chuckling over the "camp people" bit.
Matt rocking one of my all time favorite albums on his shirt.
It was movies like this that made me think while growing up that kids in the 60s/70s where always surfing and at the beach
Funny coincidence, I just watched an SNL parody of this last night.
This reminded me of Back to the Beach (1987). I can't believe Fishbone was in that movie. 6 degrees.
@@dylanwheelhouse9932 and a Pee Wee Herman song! Oh the eighties.
Fun fact relating to Showbiz/Chuck E. Cheese discussion: Chuck E. Cheese went bankrupt and was bought out by Showbiz, which then converted their locations to Chuck E. Cheese because they had better brand recognition.
Great episode! I grew up on this movie and watched it again and again and again and (sigh) again. I have no excuse but probably will watch it at least one more time before I die. No excuse there either.
Gotta love Matt's Tribe T-shirt
“I like the credits more than the movie!” - no kidding I said the exact same thing when I watched the movie the first time.
I remember at the start of the 6th grade (first few days), I watched a movie on TV called The Devil’s Triangle. The ending was terrorizing for a TV movie! It absolutely gave me a nightmare.
Great episode as always and HOLY SHIT THATS AN AWESOME LOW END THEORY SHIRT SLOANY BOY!
Sick Tribe shirt, Matt!
You guys are still the best. Thank you so much.
Showbiz came first and was the far superior "Robots entertaining kids" restaurant.
You said my name right! Good Time - one of the best of the decade. Ya'll should do The Lighthouse in SEEN IT
It's because 'Frankie' is a more common name and 'Annette' stands out. Viewers would easily conceive of him playing a character named Frankie but if her character was named Annette, they'd just think of the actress. Same with Lucy and Desi, Etc.
1:06 Well, you say that Matt, but the fact is that it's still causing you nightmares
Please review Motorama from 1991. Totally underrated, wholly awesome. Plus, Jack Nance runs a motel and is obsessed with squirrels.
Saw motorama as a kid on UPNs weekend movie lineup one week. It was so surreal and familiar yet alien, I loved it
Hey guys great episode as always. I have a question or a suggestion. Have you ever considered doing a series of welcome to the basement about music?
I would personally love to hear your opinions about various artists.
For instance I have somehow lived my whole life without ever actually having realized who Dusty Springfield was. I enjoyed son of a preacher man but didn’t really realize who it was. My wife has introduced me to the rest of her work and I’m absolutely hooked. My god I’m 45 years old and somehow never discovered this incredible voice.
I thought of you guys.
You guys have given us such great recommendations for movies that I’ve never heard of until I heard it from you. You both obviously love all kinds of music and would have a lot of insight and interesting recommendations that I would find enlightening and entertaining. Behind Matt in every episode is that shelf bursting with vinyl and although you guys touch on music occasionally in the unboxing videos, your insight, I believe is worthy of its own Welcome To The Basement spin-off show.
Either way thanks for the entertainment and all the great movie recommendations over the past several years. I’ve been with you guys since even before Chad Vader, and will continue as long as you guys are willing to share. I wish you all the continued success and happiness.
You are truly one of the greats, you are up there with red letter media and Adam McDermott! And if you haven’t seen Adam and enjoy games! Please watch him! And could you guys make an episode just about music!
Tribe Called Quest t-shirt, didn't know Matt had such a fine taste for hiphop
Beach Party Thrill Level: 4.8
And of course, The Cure's - Standing On A Beach.
Keep up the great work guys! Been watching since the very beginning when I was still in high school and now I'm about to graduate university. Wondering if you've seen Bad Times at the El Royale? I saw it on an airplane and loved it!
The dirt-covered people are coming to get you Matt! You'll never be able to watch Night of the Living Dead the same again.
So I was revisiting this episode and I realized that the Professor was Mark Halliday from Dial M for Murder.
Lol Matt has the same house shoes as me.
Nice Tribe shirt, Matt.
I really didn't see that cameo coming.
Jumping back on the Basement train after a long time away and I’m loving it!
Have you seen Dangerous Beauty? It came into Netflix not too long ago and I really enjoyed it. A bit Shakespeare-in-Love-esque but otherwise a pretty interesting story, and of course because it’s set in Renaissance Venice it’s quite pretty!
Pee Wee! Sing the bird!
When I was in college I had a dream where I was walking at night, between to hills, and old people covered in white clay where on top of dried up trees that where on fire but didn't burn, and they just whispered to me "no te detengas aqui, sigue caminando..." but I just had finished reading Juan Rulfo's "Pedro Paramo".
3:10 Matt it's very interesting you mention a Showbiz Pizza Bear movie. How about Seen It: The Hug
It's a short horror film involving the showbiz pizza bear, no ape, though.
I was hoping it was john candy at the beach.
The gremlins and the holders never go
Continuing my campaign since episode 1 for "Flight of Dragons"!!!
I'm not sure if this one has been asked, but seen it, Swiss Family Robinson (1960)
Yall should check out the disney channel movie teen beach movie kinda inspired by these movies
Left Handed Thumb Kiss is the cool band name for today.
So what did Matt think of the Brothers Grimm (with the dirt child)?
ShowBiz Pizza was made by the same people who made Chuck E. Cheese, after it was bought and they had a falling out with the new owners.
OUTLANDER!
Wait... "A net, funny cello"
Been living Robert Pattinson movies lately. Lighthouse was weird and I couldn't look away. Dunno if they went a little crazy making it
The best of the year so far. Haven't seen Parasite yet though.
Saw parasite a couple days ago. Thought it was really well done and quite funny
Question for you guys: What is the recommended amount of time to wait before re-watching a movie when you had a bad first-time viewing experience? I recently made the mistake of watching a film I was really looking forward to with an extremely chatty friend and it really took me out of the movie. I'd like to give the movie another chance from as close to a blank slate that I can get.
What was the film, and have you rewatched it yet?
Lilly Daché (circa. 1898 - 31 December 1989) was a European-born American milliner and fashion designer.
I was once making out with a woman in a car out in the cornfields of IL. when she asked "have you ever seen that movie 'Children of the Corn'? I didn't answer. I just started the car and drove her home.
the two girls on the left in black at 7:20 look completely stoned.
MATT! WHERE DID YOU GET THAT T-SHIRT?
SPCU - Featuring Dick the Birthday Boy!
nice a tribe called quest shirt Matt :)
Is quest what the tribe is called, or did quest get called by a tribe and a third party is letting us know
Oaf I think that’s a bit of a reach, have to file that away as a low end theory
16:00 Close, but I think You probably answered your own question - Disney actually still had her under contract and was leery of loner her out to AIP. They didn't not allow her to be photographed in skimpy bikini (which is why hers is "more tame" then the others). I bet that played into her character's name - Frankie is playing Frankie because he is Frankie - he's not interchangeable. But Annette is not "playing" Annette because Disney probably wanted to keep some distance between her wholesome image and what was basically for the time a "teen sex comedy".
THAT'S A LAPTOP
According to Wikipedia Lilly Daché was a French-born American hat designer.
Just wondering, where did the “thumb kiss” come from?
Megaforce episode
But, oh, to see the book store employee from "The Big Sleep," Dorothy Malone, as a blonde in a beach movie...?
The cough drop joke is supposed to be about the Smith brothers. They weren't twins.
Make Pleasantville but a beach party movie?
Free Solo -- I cringe just thinking about it. The only thing worse for me would be The Walk, the documentary about Philippe Petit, who walked between the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York on a tightrope.
American International Records was NOT a made-up record label; however it was primarily a promotional vehicle for the movies. They did not press nor sell very many copies. Most were promotional copies sent to radio stations. Still, some interesting releases. www.discogs.com/label/81511-American-International-Records
didn't he earn that oscar, it was not a participation trophy or we snubbed you years and years on other great performances, so here, here's a statue for being in a movie this year?
Surf
I've heard that Teri Garr danced in a bikini in a lot of these beach films
No, that's a cooler top.
8:31 Kristen Stewart
Since we're watching Beach Party, Seen It: Back To The Beach?
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Back_to_the_Beach
Isn't the mascot of the showbiz pizza The Showbiz Pizza Bear? Of Redlettermedia, Dick the Birthday Boy and Ellen show fame?
Surf?
Surf.
Wait. Jonah Hill is an A-list actor? When did that happen?
I don't really have a dog in this fight, but Jonah was nominated for Oscars twice and probably should have won one of them. 🤷♂🤷♂🤷♂️
For fuck's sake. Matt talking about his dreams again. This is less a film show and more like therapy with Dr Johnson
I come for the movie reviews. I stay for the psychoanalysis.
Matt is having dirty dreams.
"If he had a twin he'd make a good cough drop"
Did...did I hear that correctly?
I dont get it
Smith brothers
Standing on a beach with a gun in my hand
wait, he is too in love with her to break up. but not in love enough to cheat?
1:00 Uuuummm...don't ask Tucker Carlson what your nightmares about "dirty people" might mean. No offense.
DirtPeople menacing your dreams? Have you watched Twin Peaks season 3?
Please check out In China They Eat Dogs, original title I Kina spiser de hunde
its weird and awesome, if you ever do an international month or something
Mein Land! Mein Land!
