Excited my ‘pile’ activated today. My first effort (1st 24 hrs) didn’t play well. Late yesterday I spread it all back out, added some additional dirt booster, light misting and piled it back up and added the warm water. I left it covered overnight and throughout the day today (high 80’s). I checked it at 6:00 PM and it’s running 130 degrees. 👍
This winter/spring temps were rough on zoysia lawn. I had to aerate it and now I'm watering it and fertilizing it to boost it back to health. Its green but some areas are weak, more weeds this year (american burn weed) and thatch build up I have to rake up.
That would be a great source of nitrogen. The only problem is that fish emulsion is fairly soluble, so you would have to re-apply it relatively often compared to a lot of other organic fertilizers that decompose more slowly. Your grass would love it, though.
Right, I've used it for about three applications now. The lawn seems to love it! At 2oz per gallon rate the smell doesn't linger too long. If you go to 4oz or higher the stink definitely lingers. But I like that old funky creek smell! 😂
Doc, thanks for the very good info on synthetic vs organic. I've been watching your vids for years and never fail to learn something new from each video.
One of the reasons one of the most known monocultures of Brazil, the sugar cane, continues to be a viable alternative is because they leave behind a lot of carbon and organic matter during harvest season: they put it all on fire. After the fire is gone, workers get back in the fields to harvest the cane, leaving some cane nodules behind. Some leftovers of the processing are grown back. All of that later gets tilled and new canes planted back. First few feet of dirt are dark as crude oil, and it keeps producing tons of cane, year after year. Granted, there are but a handful of cold weeks and maybe only a few days of frost, so micro life has time to act its magic.
Hi Doc. Farm House looking Great! My lawn looking better than last year. I'm putting down PGT Complete and now I will Dirt Booster..temperatures are above 80 here on San Antonio TX. Get well. Thanks again. Happy Memorial weekend! Edwin Diaz
Feel free to let us know if TGW needs any help pulling that squash! I can be there in an hour and LOVE fresh squash and onions!!! I’d even be willing to throw a handful of food into the pond for you! Safe travels South. Enjoy the shrimp and mild temps!
Hey Doc, My yard in Texas is St. Augustine and it turns out it has a bad case of Take All Patch. Unfortunately there is not a fungicde product that will take care of it. Texas A&M gave me some recommendations about Sphagnum Peat Moss and how to do that. Do you think using products like Humichar, using Dirt Booster and others you recommend can help with Take All Patch? I would love to know your thoughts and possible solutions. Thanks.
For the past 20 years I've been using ordinary corn meal from the feed store to resolve fungal issues in St Augustine. Apply at a rate of at least 15 pounds per 1,000 square feet and give it three FULL weeks to see the new grass coming in healthy. Apply to the entire yard to avoid it looking patchy, because corn meal is an organic fertilizer. Otherwise you'll have green spots. This approach was pioneered at the Stephenville campus back in the 90s, but they completely disclaimed it in the early 00s. Don't know why, because it works for me year after year. Also I've been talking about corn meal on the lawn forums for 20 years. It turns out that St Augustine is the only grass type that responds well to corn meal as a cure for fungal issues. The way it works is this: corn is decomposed by a fungus which attracts a different fungus called Trichoderma (try-ko-DER-ma). Trichoderma is a predatory fungus which feeds on other fungi like the ones causing the disease in your lawn. Since the cure is biological, any use of a fungicide will kill the trichoderma and negate any anti-fungal effect of the corn meal.
Doc, I have a question for you. I have access to both Humic acid & Carbon (the carbon used for water filtration) and was wondering if these two products can be combined and used on my lawn to improve my soil and if so how can they be applied and at what rate? Would it be possible and if so how can I contact you other than on this website?
Chicken feed and most other grain type organic fertilizers go down at a rate of 15 to 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet. I follow the 'federal holiday' schedule by applying on Memorial Day, 4th of July, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving. If you live in the south you can add Washington's birthday.
Hey doc seems your website content is not available outside the US i would like get your guides for Bermuda lawn however i think you're getting some false positive detections from your wordfence firewall.
I just received my rx soil results for my zoysia lawn. They are recommending a 16-0-2 fertilizer, which i cant find anywhere. Im new to that, what is an alternative? Thank you!
Yes. The fungus in your yard that you treated for was potentially mycorrhizal as well. Fungicides don't discriminate, they will kill good fungi along with the bad. For faster soil recovery, you will need to research what your yard was treated with and re-inoculate with mycorrhizae after the fungicide has broken down/washed out of the soil. It will recover on it's own slowly over time, but a product like Doc's dirt booster with mycorrhizae would not only speed up the process, it would also help to improve soil quality.
@@christineedwards4865 Christine, thanks for the answer to Scott's question. I have a dollar spot fungus problem that I need to treat. I didn't realize the damage using a fungicide would do to the soil. I'll put down a heavy dose of dirt booster after my fungus treatment, thanks.
@@Ken-inGA No problem. Be prepared to wait a while before you put down the mycorrhizae. The fungicide will linger in the soil for a while, how long will depend on the chemicals. If you put it down too soon, it will get killed off by that dollar spot treatment, similar to how re-seeding a lawn a month after weed and feed will lead to poor germination.
@@Ken-inGA You may as well wait a month before trying to recover from the fungicide. Otherwise residual fungicide will be killing the new fungi you bring in with the new product.

Doc, I just put down, some dirt booster, with some 10-10-10, in prep for seeding. 🤞🏽
Doc, what is your opinion on using liquid fish emulsion on the lawn?
Good question. I've been debating about that as well. It would definitely smell
