  • Experience the traditional Qilin (Chinese Unicorn) dance performed by the Persatuan Tarian Naga Unicorn dan Singa Yu Yi (沙巴 孟加达 友艺龙麒狮体育会). While the Qilin dance is widely popular in Sabah, it remains less common in other parts of Malaysia. This revered dance is deeply rooted in Chinese Hakka culture and was introduced to Sabah during the era of British North Borneo when many Hakka immigrants arrived to work.
Despite its fierce appearance, the Qilin is a gentle and sacred creature known for its ability to discern and its herbivorous diet. Second only to the dragon (loong) in Chinese mythology, the Qilin is portrayed as intelligent and curious, cautiously approaching anything of interest. Adorned with the Chinese characters 风调雨顺 (fēng tiáo yǔ shùn), symbolizing wishes for balanced weather and bountiful harvests, it reflects the desires of farming communities in ancient times.
Accompanied by a lively orchestra of cymbals and gongs, the Qilin dance serves to dispel misfortune and infuse celebratory events with joyous energy. With movements reminiscent of both cats and puppies, the Qilin's lively demeanor showcases its agility and vitality. Believed to bring prosperity and auspicious blessings, the Qilin dance is a common feature of festivities and cultural celebrations.
