  • Return to Monkey Island has been in the hands of fans for a month now and everyone has their own stories connected to the game. Despite being an impossible notion at one point, the third Ron Gilbert game was finally released and resolved after 32 years.
In this video, I will do my best to explain the ending of this game and the implications it has for every other game in the series. Guybrush, Elaine, and even LeChuck have had their entire lives uprooted by the revelations in Return to Monkey Island, and it's a lot to wrap your head around.

Remember how Elaine takes "a shortcut" to Monkey Island. She tells Guybrush "there was no need to create the potion." If they were pretend-playing in the amusement park then Elaine must have simply walked out of one room and entered another.

Great video! I enjoyed the ending, the t-shirt made me laugh, turning off the lights made me sad and nostalgic, and it was sweet to have Elaine waiting for Guybrush. And then back to talking with Boybrush and his reaction was nice. Also, weirdly, shutting down the animatronics and stuff didn't make me sad. It was that sort of contented feeling you get when you close a good book that you've just finished.

The official ending, just don't believe the Voodoo Spell, and don't take the key, Do Not open the chest or eat the forbidden fruit... and the adventures will continue triumphantly.
      Or go get the following:
      1. Lord of the Rings ending
      2. Inception ending
      3. Goonies ending
      4. Continue chasing the secret with LeChuck and others orrrr
      5. Triumphant ending - don't take the key, don't open the chest, and new adventures await in the world you once knew (also a PS5 trophy for returning to the "real world")
      6. Or just settle for your disappointment that part of the adventure was The Notebook ending most people fell for. But I knew it was Voodoo Magic because ...
      7. Taking the T-Shirt back to the world you once knew shows the "Acid Trip" ending, where clearly he threw that shirt into the cauldron to reveal the True Secret of Monkey Island! (While the Voodoo lady was on her lunch break)
Guybrush is a real pirate. Two endings actually fit well. The rest are just for fun.
The theme park ending was hilarious is all. Why are people so upset? Monkey Island + Legend of Zelda = Breath of the Wild.

Thimbleweed Park meta is a very different kind of meta than RtMI’s. The whole thing being meta doesn’t mean it’s lazy. On the contrary, there is nothing lazy in RtMI ending in my opinion. It took a lot of effort for all the details. Including the variants of it. Including narrative thoughtfulness.

So although I didn't grow up and play these games in the 90s, I played a few of them growing up. The Monkey Island games along with the Myst series got me into game dev, and I'm in the process of completing my studies in that field. Also, I'm autistic, and for the past year and a half I've been launched back into having MI as my special interest, so everything I've been consuming has been related to the games. So as you can tell, these games really mean a lot to me.
I was absolutely ecstatic when I found out one was being made after so long, and that I'd get to play it as it came out instead of years later like the others. And oh how magical it was to play it. I haven't been this happy in a while.
The ending hit me hard. It wasn't really disappointing, just hard to process - in a way it felt like everything just came crashing down around me when Guybrush walked out the door, back onto Melee Island but in theme park form. I expected some grand ending, a reveal, a big fight. Not this. I cried, and was numb for a while. I wouldn't want it to be any other way though. I love what Ron Gilbert did, and the depth and metaness of the endings.
It was an experience I feel lucky to have had though, and the timing worked out really well with the series becoming my special interest again just in time for the new game being announced.
Thank you for your videos, for the Monkey Island Mondays leading up to the release, and for the playthroughs. Also sorry for this absolute essay, but I had a lot to say

I think that because LeChuck entered the chamber first, he actually claimed the treasure, and that it gave him the power to influence everyones perception of reality. He then gave guybrush a consolation prize of the t-shirt, LeChuck never wanted to kill guybrush as he had countless opportunity to do so, LeChuck wanted to win the prize, and have guybrush live the rest of his life in failure, having never achieved his life long quest. To me it felt like Elaine was talking kinda weird to Guybrush almost throughout the whole game, almost as if she was hiding something from him. I was actually suspecting her of being an impostor or something for a while. Then when she came to talk with him at the end, she sounded almost pitying, like she was throwing him a bone. And he was just sitting there, tired.
I got the feeling that he's having some mental breakdown or bad memory. Almost like a Shutter Island scenario. He's just sick, so they bring him to the Theme Park, and he thinks he's a real pirate.
Or Elaine was totally normal and I just made it up in my head. I opened the chest, I don't know if that matters. But when she said they were going on a new adventure, Guybrush almost sounded sad. Like it didn't matter because it could never measure up to the excitement he had when he was chasing the Secret Treasure anyway..
Not my favorite Monkey Island game.. Felt too easy/short, the visual style is okay, I guess, the humor is okay but it just isn't up to par with the original trilogy. I wish they had went with hand-drawn style like in Monkey Island 3. That game will never go out of style!

What felt weird to me was how the game was seemingly building up to a potential relationship-breaking conflict between Elaine and Guybrush only for it to be kind of brushed aside and left unresolved in the end. Specially the thing about Guybrush being really selfish and single-minded about pursuing his Secret while doing a lot of harm to people along the way, and Elaine slowly collecting evidence and first-hand testimony of all of that. The torn-up photograph of the couple being another not so subtle hint. Her being so understanding and supportive of him feels off-character IMO.
I've seen some interviews with Ron Gilbert and apparently they really were supposed to fight, but ultimately this was cut because they felt the tone was off for Monkey Island and testers didn't like it. I'm OK with that, but then why left all of those elements in? Maybe everything was so deeply baked into the game's design by then that they couldn't do much about it.
I still greatly enjoyed the game though. I think it does capture a lot of the things I love about old point-and-click adventure games while modernizing the gameplay in ways that I personally appreciated. Ron and Dave being able to make another Monkey Island is something I'd never thought I would see, and I have to say when I saw this come up on Gamepass my jaw was on the floor.

I'm late but I've been thinking about Monkey Island with the Sea of Thieves announcement. I think Return to Monkey Island is THE perfect ending for the series, and kinda makes the game a masterpiece in my eyes. I know lots of people won't agree with that, but the more I think about it, the more I love the ending. It really fits this fun narrative the games have developed about this idea of story telling and writing itself and how what the people who engage with the stories want to take away from it is just as valid as what the author wants, so it can literally appease like EVERY Monkey Island fan. If you're like me and you really love the whole series and Guybrush as a character, you can see it as everything that we've seen in the games is the "real story" of his adventures and the "real" secret of Monkey Island is something he found but keeps secret. Or you if that's not your vibe you can take that everything from Return to Tales is non-cannon and just stories, or somewhere; anywhere, inbetween. That's genuinely really interesting. You can read it as an extension of the "Guybrush really was just a kid at an amusement park all along" and now he's an adult working at the park sharing fun stories with his kid, and even then its still a pretty satisfying ending if you're one of the fans who REALLY subscribes to the ending of 2. Idk, the more I think about it, Return legit might be a masterpiece and the ending is so unbelievably perfect on a lot of levels for all fans provided you're open minded.
Also, I do think its cool we got an answer to what Ron Gilbert's "original" secret of Monkey Island is or was, but its also up to the player how valid that really is. If you want, the actual in-world-real "SECRET" of Monkey Island could have been solved if you really want or it can be a secret forever. For me, I honestly would rather we never knew what the in-universe secret was, or if it even mattered. I like not knowing what it is and I'd like to keep it that way, I care more about Guybrush and Elaine living good and happy lives, and I think Ron and Guybrush himself kinda feel the same, at least from how I view the ending.
To me; my ending is that everything is real up until Guybrush walks through the last door, and then he starts changing the story to mess with Boybrush. All the adventures were real, Guybrush and Elaine were mighty pirates, are still happy and married, and enjoying retirement from pirating (at least as a full time job) and Guybrush himself really did learn what the secret of Monkey Island was. But he also likes keeping it just to himself, like a real pirate. That's my Guybrush.
I like the idea that Guybrush learns what the Secret is, even if we the audience don't. I really don't care what the secret is, I care that the characters I've loved for so many years are happy and get the ending they deserve.

This was unfair. It was already done with the big whoop treasure in MI2 and the return to melee island through the tunnels. I really expected a nice closure this time.

I just love to play, and I know it's a silly game about pirates, I never expected some spectacular secret that would blow up my mind or unravel the mistery of the universe.. And when Guybrush opened that gate and went back to Melee Island I was like, "yeah, this feels about right", and laughed. I don't know, I just loved this game

I know this is probably going to sound unpleasant to a lot of people but its not intended to its just my take on it but I got the impression that the ending was actually the developers way of saying "It was OUR game so we will choose its destiny".Think about it for a moment, the game is meant to take place directly after "Monkey Island 2:Le Chucks revenge" so in essense its saying that the events in the games "Curse of Monkey Island,Escape from Monkey Island and Tales of Monkey Island" never actually happened. The fact that the ending showed it was all fake in an amusement park in both games were so similar its as if they said "This is how we wanted it to end all those years ago and now we will make sure of it".Personally I was very disappointed with the ending because even today when I play a game its not because I am looking for philosophy or to hear someones thoughts on the nature of time and journey its because I`m looking for entertainment and this really failed to deliever.

I guess the problem lies in the fact, that you are not interested in the very things, the actual creators of MI seem to be most interested in. Bc - as i see it - this is all very much "someones thoughts on the nature of" ... telling stories. And about the change of perspectives on stories while you grow older.
They literally call the actual storyline "a goofy pirate adventure" in their (great!) letter in the scrapbook.

The game literally calls you a kid and doesn't tell you the ending.
Then tease you with another story that you don't see. The Secret OF Monkey Island can't be something that's not even on the Island.
Again I have NO problem with Big Whoop as it was something Beautiful and Horrible, the real life. But, our character did react to it.
This ending, literally has Elaine petting us on the head and telling us is bed time, go wish your teeth. It's neither clever neither original. I would like to see LeChuck finding the t shirt and Elaine confront him that he needs to move on, even as a demon of the 7 seas... or something HAVE CHARACTER INTERACTIONS! Not this 4th breaking slap on the player's face. This game was overall the biggest disappointment I have experienced in gaming and that covers a lot of ground. Writing is bland and lazy with 0 jokes and compared to Thimbleweed felt like a cynical nostalgia trip. Ending does make sense considering the direction they went in which was the tired old "break the 4th wall a bunch in place of actual comedy or actual creativity". They did this in Thimbleweed too but manged to rein it in before it became obnoxious (and that game is just a straight masterpiece anyway). I will say that the soundtrack is phenomenal and better at scratching that nostalgia itch than the rest of the game (certainly the art style turned a lot of players off as well).
Ron Gilbert = overrated. There I said it. Give me a Wadjet Eye adventure game any day of the week over Return to Monkey Island. Series peaked at the 3rd game which didn't even involve RG!

While I was also initially pissed off with the ending after reading other people's thoughts on the subject I have warmed to it.
It's like one of those old adventure books where you choose your own ending and I'm guessing Ron did this so no one would be disappointed... Some wanted a meta ending and some wanted a more straightforward ending.
As for the ending Ron thinks is cannon I'm guessing it's the meta one where Guybrush is in an escape room making up his adventures. He would of made this cannon but after Thimbleweed park's ending getting slated by a large number of the fanbase I'm guessing he didn't want that for MI.
The only thing I'm disappointed with is the lack of a final battle/ending with LeChuck...
Although Ron did say that a quote on the official website stating "Return to MI was the final game in the series" was wrong leaves hope the team could make another game.

    Or go get the following:

    3. Goonies ending
    4. Continue chasing the secret with LeChuck and others fighting over the key to the chest orrrr
    5. Triumphant ending - don't take the key, don't open the chest, and new adventures await in the world you once knew (also a PS5 trophy for returning to the "real world")

    7. Taking the T-Shirt back to the world you once knew shows the "Acid Trip" ending, where clearly he threw that shirt into the cauldron to reveal the True Secret of Monkey Island! (While the Voodoo lady was on her lunch break)
I know the secret of Monkey Island, and that is... to NOT know the secret of Monkey Island. Besides, there never was one officially at the origin... it was supposed to be called "Mutiny on Monkey Island". So...

I have played through ‘The Secret of Monkey Island’ and it’s sequels many times. They are dear to me and one of my favourite game series. I was enthusiastic regarding the new game but have been left somewhat let down and disgruntled after playing through.
The first thing I’d like to mention relates to the art style. It just didn’t fit for me at all. The original pixel style was terrific. I’m not sure what the devs were thinking.
As it relates to the ending. I have to say I thought the ending was pointless. It made me wonder why I even bothered playing through the game in the first place. There’s nothing I dislike more than this ‘subvert expectations’ type of storytelling. There should of been at least some payoff. It was just so cheap. It was a shame as I generally enjoyed most of the puzzles.
Lastly there was a clear progressive slant to the game. Wherever they could shoehorn a minority or mannish looking female character they jumped at the chance. I guess this is the state of ‘modern sequels’ these days.
Overall it was a let down. I can’t believe people in the comments are claiming to ‘have cried’ at this. I just don’t get it.
