- Irish Rally Driver Bertie Fisher has a lucky escape in the 1986 Galway Rally in his Manta 400.
has he is aproching a sharp right hand corner his brakes fail at 120 mph..
when it was only due to Bertie's skill and quick reactions in avoiding a major spectator accident... - Авто та транспорт
The instant he felt brake pressure drop he shifted from 5th to first and let the clutch out to biting point not to lock up the rear. Then using the handbrake to slow the car as much as possible, the rear tyres chirping at the limit of their grip he drifts through a chicane made of children and avoids a car by putting two wheels over a bank and onto a wall. It's not the circumstance but genius caught on film that gives me goosebumps.
An outstandingly written summary (prose) of quite a remarkable demonstration of skill coupled with a measure of good luck!
Well said! Brilliant. I have always thought that Rally drivers were the best in the world, even over F1 drivers.
He definitely didn't go into 1st. That would have resulted in either locking the wheels up, or over revving the engine to the point it would blow a piston. He also shifts the gear stick down, so at best, he went into second.
@@PBMS123 he went 1st my friend .it is a dog leg .dont write if you are not familiar with cars or specifically with racing cars of that era
@@georgeb.2949 Did Opel mantas have dog leg gear boxes? Or was it common practice to put them in rally cars
That is the best bit of driven I have seen in 27 year's watching rallying
I remember that incident well, haven’t seen it for 20 years, Bertie Fisher was an amazing driver, really amazing. The things he could make that car do, this incident shows the speed of thought he had very well. What a shame for his family that he was lost so young.
Amazing driver. RIP Bertie.
How quickly he switched to handbrake was godlike. Bertie was a very very quick and talented driver. He gave both McRaes runs for their money in lesser equipment
what a skillful driver gone but not forgotten r.i.p bertie
Thats why they call him the one handed wander, top class driver, one of the very very best 😊 Gone but never forgotten 😢
"Bertie Fisher has a lucky escape" no spectators have lucky escape! Bertie fisher does some of the most skilled driving I've seen!
Everyone was lucky here, skill can only achieve so much in situations like this.
Regardless of skill and reflexes etc. You need a bit of luck on your side too.
Some things are beyond your control. With all the skill in the world he couldn't control the spectators, the car blocking the junction, what was behind all that there could have been something or someone else there that wouldn't have been visible until he was already committed to going through the gap.
At the time where the Spectators were standing was considered safe by the marshals!! Great reactions by Bertie and quick thinking and somebodys prayers. A true gent meet him at the Donegal Rally... R.I.P Bertie
Nearly 20 years ago we lost Bertie, Mark and Emma. Truly tragic :-(
Pure genius
This is up there with Ari's Dear God moment
Definitely, except the "dear god" moment is made special by Terry Harryman saying it. Otherwise it would have likely been overlooked along with all the other close shaves Ari got away with.
Amazing Save,
God Bless them all.
Good driving skills!

That was amazing.
i was there when it happened, i was 6 and i remember it like it was yesterday.
wow
Whew, that's nothing but pure experience at work there. Not enough time to think, just react. "Don't practice until you get it right. Practice until you can't get it wrong."
Astonishing car control, a lesser man would have caused serious damage. R.I.P Mr Fisher.
that is unbelievable!!
It's amazing, so amazing.

Driver...
I live in a country where no rallies were ever carried out. But if I ever am near a road where a rally is being carried out, I would get the fuck out of the way.
How the fuck did the car stop if the brake snapped?
+Julez Rulez He used engine braking by shifting down to lose most of the speed as well as the handbrake, perhaps when he completely stopped the brakes were only working slightly. When a calliper went in my car once, the brakes only seemed to work when moving slowly and when you put your foot down to brake and the pedal drops to the floor its a horrible feeling. Bertie handled this incredibly well.
+Julez Rulez pull e-brake and downshift
Maybe the driver drove into wrong way?
This is not samir
I highly, highly doubt they were doing 120mph. At that speed you _cannot_ react - the car cannot either. It's a wrecking ball towards everything in front of it.
Ohhhhh! With a brake failure to boot! I can't believe people believe this crock of shit. You cannot, cannot stop a car doing a pip shy of 200 km/h (claimed) with faulty brakes, at that speed the 30° loss of control turns would have flipped the car a dozen times at least.
The passanger shouting "the other way" shut up fool! Leave it to the driver
You shut up. He's not just a passenger.
