Which Sunglasses Are Best? Persol Or Ray-ban - Why Handmade Quality Always Wins Over Luxury Branding

Поділитися
Вставка
  • Опубліковано 19 сер 2024
  • After being greatly inspired by a video I saw recently on the excellent "Alpha M" channel about Ray-Ban Wayfarers, I decide to give my own opinion on which sunglasses brand I myself consider the best. I discuss luxury branding in context of the quality of sunglasses and how sometimes paying a bit more for the handmade quality over out sourced mass production can really pay off and last you a lifetime. Todays video I talk specifically about my favourite brand; Persol, its long legacy as a heritage brand, iconic Eurocentric and hollywood 60s sophistication, the unique production of its glasses, and which pair I choose for myself. A good pair of Ray-bans will last a decade but a good pair of Persol will last a lifetime.

I agree. I'm a sunglass lover and wouldn't have a "luxury" designer pair of glasses in my collection. I do care a lot about the lenses. More so than the frames. Even so, I do own a few pairs of Ray-Ban because they are still iconic. I would love more Persol but i need large frames and Persol barely offers them. Now, quality being first, I would put Persol, Randolph Engineering and Serengeti on top. Maui Jim also makes nice sunglasses with superb lenses. I currently own Oakley, Ray-Ban, Costa, Maui Jim, Revo, Serengeti, Smith, Randolph, Persol and I consider each of those a good brand. And, to be fair, my RB2132 New Wayfarers and RB3560 Colonel are both made in Italy and have crystal lenses and feel high quality to me. Actually, all my RB, except one are made in Italy.

I even wear sunglasses in the winter. Especially if the sun is shining with snow on the ground. Can get extremely bright and damage your eyes if you aren't careful.

In Southern California, we wear sunglasses all year round. Sometimes we switch from a gradient brown in the winter to a darker shade in the summer. Few people who drive here do not wear sunglasses while driving during the daylight hours there is so much sun here.

@@alexp3752 Yeah I can imagine that. Squinting all the time will give you wrinkles too, so just add that to the benefits of always having sunglasses!

I have had a love for Ray Bans since I was a young Lieutenant back in the 60's. They were made by B&L back then. I remember purchasing a pair in the post exchange, and memory is that I paid $17 or $18 for them. I own a couple of pairs today.

3 things I instantly look at. I look at people's shoes, the watch they wear, and if they wear glasses I look for Persol. It tells me a lot about a person without speaking a word to them. When you know more about qja!it items. You recognized Persols by the iconic look. Without having to see a name. I wore Varnet, and Wayfairers in the early 80's. Then spotted Elton John, and George Michael wearing Persols and was hooked.

Classic and classy. Persol sunglasses are simply the best. I own 3 pair (714 Havana/Brown, 714SM Lt Havana/Blue, and 649 Black/Green) and the feeling of quality, not to mention quality of image through the lenses, is very comforting. Like you, I appreciate quality of construction and quality of design, and no other brand marries the two the way Persol does it. 😎 Great channel btw!

The 2132 or 'new wayfarer' might be injection molded plastic, however, the 2140 'wayfarer' is still hand made acetate just like the Persol range. They have in fact also been hand made in Italy since Luxottica's take over in 1999.

Persol's really are a step above and can be had affordably (well for glasses in this range) with a sale. I've had a love for sunglasses my entire life but these are the finest I've seen. Most practical? Well I wouldn't recommend them for physical activity, but for driving, hanging with friends, out on the town, they're perfect. They'll make you feel like a million bucks.

The Urban Gentry Thx boss and its like from everyone I get looks or glares of admiration. These glasses, I have a funny feeling, will last me the rest of my adult life. That's just me, and I am particular towards the classic look, but I find circular frames less fashionable. The craftmenship on these glasses is sublime, you truly are suave, stylish and slick. Have a good one, and I subbed!
P.S. Omega watches rule, but I am looking for something along the lines of a diver watch and something with a blacklight. Now I have a Timex (cheap watch but its lasted me longer than my dress watches) and am wondering, is there a market for higher end watches with blacklights? I only ask because I go clubbing often and require it, and I hate to pull out me 5s everytime I cannot read the time off my Rolex. I am thinking of going the LED watch route, but I would like to hear your feedback. Thanks again for your videos!

Great video. I totally agree with him and I have four pairs of Persol. Film Noir edition sunglasses which are quite like his, a classic pair which are in tortoiseshell and look great in a summer suit many celebrities go for Persol tortoiseshell and Bond currently wear them. That's something he didn't mention is that not only classic Hollywood and Fellini are Persol but if you google 'Persol celebrity,' you'll see they are still the choice of the world's biggest stars.
They are the ultimate. Oh the other two pairs I have as my eyeglasses. They make superb eyeglasses frames as well as sunglasses and you will not find them in Specsavers and you will stand out in them.

The high polished acetate frames from Persol glasses certainly look quite stunning, and provide an arguably more elevated look than some brands. I've have heard of some problems with their folding frame models in terms of breakage.
Personally, I own both Persol and Maui Jim sunglasses and I prefer my Maui Jim Pilot glasses in terms of “quality.”
The proprietary Evolution lenses that Maui Jim produces are superior in every way to anything Luxottica produces in terms of performance, clarity and quality as they cannot provide the same level of optical clarity, and high definition vision in a myriad of weather conditions including overcast days like Maui Jim.
I suspect the speaker has a bit bias toward Italian made goods with history.

Over the years I had shades from DG, Gucci, Ginafranco Ferre, Lanvin all nice designs stunners but the common problem was they always somehow broke even though I am very careful person. I like persol but to call them handmade is stretching it a little bit. Hand assembled yes, but that's true of all decent quality sunglasses. Obviously they're a higher quality than Ray-Ban but there are definitely higher quality glasses out there. you're in new york the home of moscot a real family business that produces amazing quality glasses. i'm also a big fan of some of the newer japanese brands like eyevan.

I was thinking of getting some Oliver People's Sunglasses but I think you changed my mind. I 100% agree no mass produced sunglasses can match the Persols for quality. I read somewhere that some of the big fashion brands out source sunglasses to the same factories that make the $10 service station Sunny's

My only gripe with Persol is they do tend to slide down my nose if I lean foward, but so do my Vuarnets and Oliver Peoples sunglasses so not a legit gripe to negate the high quality of Persols.

This video made me look at some Persols, and they have some really cool designs. I wish I had known about them before I bought my Ray Bans. That being said, I don't think that it's accurate to say that any Persol design is as iconic as those of Ray Ban. The Wayfarer and the Aviator are undoubtedly the two most iconic sunglasses designs in the world. In California where I live they are so ubiquitous that it's rare to meet someone who doesn't own at least one pair of Ray Bans (or other glasses of a Ray Ban design). I got a Clubmaster because I liked it's classic styling but also the fact that it wasn't as common as the other two designs, although the Persols have that combination as well and I may have ended up buying those instead. Lastly I'd like to add that only the cheapest Ray Bans are made in China. The rest (and the most classic styles) are made in Italy.

I have only really had RayBans over the years and have Aviators and a couple of wayfarers. Even glasses frames are RayBans. I have just received my Persol 2803s in Havana and DarkBrown polarised lenses. Taking them out of the box, the quality was immediately obvious. They do feel like they could last a lifetime. Now I understand.

  • @CoffeePoints

I bought a pair of Raybans Aviators last fall. It cost me more than $200, and I'm not a wealthy person by any means, but it was definitely worth every cent. The quality is impeccable, it's so light you won't even remember you're wearing a pair of shades and unless you look at a digital screen, there really isn't any color hue changes. But the whole digital screen change is more the fact that they're polarized lenses than them being Raybans. I've dropped it several times, including one time last week when it fell about two feet onto hard concrete, lens first, but it didn't even scratch.
If you're on the fence about buying Raybans, I'd say go for it. As TGV said, they already have quite a history and you'll get to be a part of it

I have over thirty Persol Rattis and considering most were made in the 1960s - they still look perfect and modern now and I can't look elsewhere, really. I wear them all and am not precious with any of them - even the iconic and rare models. By wearing them, I have had people overseas stop me to question what I was wearing and were inspired; had influenced others to collect the vintage models and have had heaps of people actually shout compliments to me in the street while wearing them. I know a girl wearing them exclusively and collecting them are a bit rare, but every size and style seems to suit me even though I wear very non-classic clothing. The model shown on you are perfect for your dimensions and style and for me, the 69218s were made for my face.

Nice review B! If someone is dead set on Wayfarer style but want to try Persol I would recommend PO2953s. I own several Persol models and love them all. I also have a collection of vintage Bausch & Lomb Ray Ban´s wich I would say have the same and in some cases even higher quality than Persol, especially in the optics. Baush & Lomb did only sell the brand Ray Ban, not the tecnology. Bauch & Lomb still exists, while Persol sold their company in total to Luxottica but still makes their glasses in the same factory with the same tecnology. So you are very right in saying that modern Ray Ban can´t compete with Persol´s. Cheers

Through the '70's and '80's I was loyal to Ray Ban. I still love my original made in USA Balorama's. In 1993 I was introduced to Persol. I have never looked back since. It's the only brand I will ever wear.

Here is my two cents on this topic:
If you want a new pair of sunglasses that are not Wayfarer style or Brow-line "clubmaster" style, I would go with the Persol's. They are significantly higher quality than modern ray-bans.
However, If you want Wayfarer or Browline style glasses, go for a pair of vintage Bausch and Lomb Ray-Ban (pre-1999, when the company was sold to Luxottica), as they are as good as the modern Persol's in terms of quality, and the lenses are incredible (not familiar with the modern Persol lenses, but the ones on my 1970's-80's Ray-Ban's are significantly better than the modern ones that I owned). They were in nearly perfect condition when I bought them from Ebay, even after ~30-40 years of wear and at least two owners.

A good pair of sunglasses are a very wise investment. They are a good protector of your eyes and allow a more comfortable living experience. Quality is important! It makes no difference if you spend a good sum if they are what you genuinely want. Most of my sunglasses are at least 20 years old. I wear out the cases and use a replacement. The key lesson is to always keep them in a good, substantial case! That is the key.

I am confused about Ray Bans. People say some are made in China and some made in Italy. They said most plastic ones are made in China and the metal ones are Italy but every Ray Ban I have seen say made in Italy including the plastic ones. Is there some kind of legal loophole that they can mostly be made in China then assembly them in Italy. So, they can say made in Italy ?

    Hello TGV. Love the show!
I love persol sunglasses but they personally don't work for me. I've had a couple of models but I found them both a bit too small for me. Those meflecto hinges actually gave me headaches if I kept the glasses on too long.
I've since gone back to Ray Bans, finally treating myself to a pair of baloramas (as worn by Clint Eastwood in his Dirty Harry films). Comfortable, iconic and classy. Made in Italy too.
Very much like yourself, I'll never ever need another pair.
    Cheers from Milan.

Very good video you explain it all, I've been wearing Persol for years also have a couple of Ray-ban aviators for when I don't care much, you are right about the quality and craftsmanship on the persols although they are under Luxotica the factory is still independent and care about their legacy, I own four pairs one of which are the 714's Steve McQueen edition and are by far the best sunglasses ever created, you just have to get them adjust at the store the first time et voila you wont even notice they are on, there is a reason Anthony Bourdain always wears Persols along with a few others that really know their stuff, I followed your recommendations on watches and got myself a good small collection going on

thank you for sharing that, they do glass lense as well i was told. talking of quality some 20yrs ago i bought a pair of wayfarers from a private buyer who told me he wore them in the sixties and the only reason for selling was they were not signed. i paid£15. i was told early rays were a yellowy green glass and these are, they slant at the front and the hinges are the same spec as raybans. the clarity of these lenses is awsome and there is no glare.

Excellent video buddy! Not only through the information you have portrayed but the video editing seems to have jumped up a notch.
Ok, now I have a couple things to comment on with regard to the subject matter. First you are absolutely right about Persol, they are on a far higher level as opposed to Ray-Ban. Its strange you would make this video now, because I just went through this dilemma a month ago. I checked out the Persol (can't remember the model I wanted) but they were a bit too much for me, they were $400 Canadian. I actually ended up getting the Wayfarer, I got the highend Wayfarer as they come in different models and I paid $230 I believe. I am really wishing I had to wait a little bit and saved another couple hundred and got the Persol. However, the Wayfarers are fantastic quality and very well built and I truly can't say anything bad about them. Mine also say Made in Italy on them.
Also, the Speedy suits you to a T! I know its not your favourite piece but sitting here where I am I have to say it matches you better than any other piece I have seen you wear and I've seen them all.

i have 2 persol 649, 1 714 and 3105 cellor. They are all hand made in Italy and all look classy and feel premium. The hinges are nice and tight even after 5 years. Granted I don't wear them everyday but they are still quality construction luxottica or not. Looking to add more persol as well, and maybe a wacky dior so real that the celebs seem to like.

I have to pick and choose on what I spend a little extra money. I lose sunglasses all the time, so I go with inexpensive ones that I won't miss. . . when they go!
To me, "luxury" includes an element of superfluity. . . something pricey which is a bit of a bauble. Sometimes it's nice to have baubles. I appreciate the hand-made aspect of better things; sensitized to this years back by the whole Arts and Crafts ethos. . . and rather than dream of passing on a nifty watch to my son, he'll receive a very solid Stickley Morris chair.

Same material acetate and glass lenses. So to say that ray-bans are less quality when both are made by hand with acetate lmao both are the originals. As if the ray-bans haven't stood the test of time and they still look just as good now as they did when they first came out and they still last 40 years later. I just saw a pair of ray-bans that were being sold in a small shop this guy owns nothing but classic hard to find items. Like the old Rolex hack watches for pilots back in ww2. Well I looked at these ray-bans and they were from the original company B&L made in the US. And they still looked better than what this kid was wearing.
