Very anxious and concerned descendant of someone in the campaign, one who apparently grew up with very incorrect history books and a faulty time travel device, is a big mood. Far Traveler background could work for that!

Made a Warforged Chronurgist, the soul of a broken clock that ticks back and forth but never progressing. It's going to be a blast to play

@@scarlightemperor3410 Go for it! a nice little addition I added was that clocks or anything that measures time breaks around them within reason, can't really break a sun dial, but an hourglasses would get blocked somehow and clocks will tic but never move. Flavour them how you want, My guy had an obsession with covering himself with pocket watches.

I know it was such a short part of this clip, but being able to freeze a spell in time as a "Pocket Spell" is waaayyyy more powerful than it initially sounds.
Creates 20 frozen in time fireballs and lays them all around a room set to go off when someone gets near them

@@dominicl5862 ah, but spell scrolls can only be used by those who are capable of casting spells already. specifically, if that spell is in your classes spell list. and also, this uses the original caster's DC and spell bonus.
I love the idea of pausing a spell and passing it off to an ally. That's going to be a lot of fun.

Ha-ha, I'm playing Chronomancer (Deep magic Kobold press) right now. Using some of previously released Matt's Dunamancy spells: Immovable object, Gift of alacrity.

I made one for my strahd campaign - old arch-mage that destroyed his body and sent him mind back in time so his younger self could confront Barovia and strahd before the thousands of deaths that would happen. I cant wait to see what happens
Matt is like: "It's not a school of magic, it's a TRADITION, stop naming it school!!" :D
How would a character learn this magic is the point Im stuck on if it isn't a school and the Drow and Cerberus Assembly have the Luxon beacons, makes me think any player related to it, would have to have Krynn or Cerberus relations to learn Dunamacy.
I'm playing a Chronurgist now and I absolutely LOVE IT!! So much flavor! My poor gnome opened a time paradox that all but drove him crazy. So now he's a time wizard

I’ve been wanting to DM a time travel campaign since I started playing. So this is basically everything I’ve been waiting for since 3.5.
Makes me think of Chromie from World of Warcraft. Would be an interesting class to play.

This subclass reminds me of an encounter I based almost entirely on the VM fight against Kamaljiori; with changes in the combat arena based on how many rounds have passed. After defeating the Androsphinx, one of the party members was given the spells Slow and Haste, though these spells would put a whole new spin on that encounter, with the Sphinx casting time-dunamancy.
Anyone feel free to homebrew anything you want! Add in more time stuff, plunder whatever you like from the various sourcebooks and use it on your own or other worlds! You can wholesale lift this class from this book and put it into your own homebrew world as another cultures time tower or something with a test to enter and train in as a wizards apprentice! You can just take this you don’t HAVE to play IN Wildemount! I just thought a few people needed this reminder! Ah thanks for this; great stuff takes a special DM to add to the lore of DND in a way that most players have been wanting! This book seems great for non Critical role fans just as much as the fans! I already preordered!

Agreed. Maybe narratively, some more training with everyone's favorite hot boi, Essek, would let him change his tradition?
I think that's where he's moving, maybe they'll houserule a double tradition? I mean, it wouldn't be weird for a mage to specialize in more than one tradition, especially the older and more powerful they get
theres an epic boon that allows a wizard to gain all the benefits of a second school

Liam has said before that Calebs used be an Evocation Wizard before his time in the mental institution. Afterwards he switched to Transmutation. So if he trains with the Dynasty enough he could probably switch schools again
Man i feel like this subclass was designed for me. I love control wizards and everything he mentions is so good for that role. Also, the theme is just great.
Locking a Spell in time to give it someone else to release it sounds awesome!
Somehow get proficiency with firearms and explosives and multiclass into warlock. You are now Homura Akemi.
This sounds like a great subclass, I'm just curious how choosing it might limit your character options in Wildemount since it seems picking that would tie you closely to the Kryn Dynasty. I don't think the Empire they are at war with recognises that type of magic. Not that this is a bad thing, just interesting to consider.
A chronurgist is like dr. Strange with the time stone. They know exactly how time is going to play out and what's needed to play time to their advantage. It's like 4d chess with people and fate.
This subclass is just a meta jojo reference

This is not really a Dr. Strange...He got just 1 artefact which gives him control over time. Like, even any other wizard can get stop time or haste etc. He has never been "time manipulator".

Volti well it’s an Infinity Stone so only those who are either proficient or made for the Mystic Arts could use it without dying, so no, not just everyone could use it.

Nah... manipulation of time in a demi-plane has always been a thing that a wizard powerful enough to actually create said demi-plane could do.

0:50 the holding a spell and giving it to a party member geminds me of : delayed fireball. since if you can grab the spell (you have to make a dex save not to blow it up) and then throw it

Funny how I started playing Quantum Break on the day this came out.
Would be cool if Caleb could change his Arcane Tradition to this in campaign as the plot progresses. Through roleplaying of course.

Just when I wanna make a Wizard with time powers, Matt Mercer and Wizards of the Coast drop this subclass on me.

you know im going to make a Chronurgist with a british accent who wanted to be a lawyer but his father was abusive to a point he killed his wife and then died of illness so i grew up with a wealthy family that owed my farther a favour for saving his life. but i only inspired to be rich and wanted to take the familys fortune, but stumpled across a magical mask and bada bing bada bum 100 years later....

I disagree that haste and slow affect time. They physically affect the target, speeding up or slowing down their reflexes and enhancing or limiting their actions. That’s why haste causes you to be momentarily exhausted when the spells ends, it’s not time catching back up to you.
I'd say they both still fit the theme, of slowing down or speeding something up
I think you're right, but there can be multiple paths to the same result, and thus two schools could have the same spell, with the same effect, but different logic.

Technically any Wizard can switch schools of magic since their magic is based on study and practice, so you could make the argument that a Wizard can just study themselves into a different specialty.

I could understand the naming for "dunamancy" since it's tied with the wildemount settings...but why "chronurgist"?? Is naming it chronomancer not appropriate? Or is there an issue of copyright?? Just saying..
Dunamancy comes from the Greek 'Dunamis', from which we derive terms like 'dynamic'.
Similarly, 'chronurgist' is the Greek equivalent to 'chronomancer'. 'Time worker', 'time manipulator', 'time crafter'. In the same way that 'thanaturgist' might correspond to 'necromancer'.
That naming convention might sound familiar: 'Thaumaturgy' = miracle work. And a 'Thaumaturg(e/ist)' is a miracle worker.

But I have no problem with the "technicalities" of naming it but with the name itself...you know what I mean, the same reasoning behind why most of us would prefer using necromancer than thanaturgist. That's why I'm asking why they didn't choose the conventional chronomancer.
@@raynxxiaqoh2833 If Dunamancy (the word) has a Greek origin, it stands to reason that Dunamancy subclasses would also have Greek names.
And what I'm saying is, it's already precedented. Plenty of spell names and such also have Greek names. Latin names aren't the only ones that fly when talking about magical terminology.
Now, Graviturgist is a weird mix of Latin and Greek. That, I find a bit weird. But still, my proposed solution would've been to find the Greek word corresponding to 'gravitas'.
(Until I just looked it up and realized it'd be something like Barétiturgy, which also sounds lousy. I see why he picked what he picked).
