Hi Tom--the American Burn Association ABLS course uses a 2 - 4 mg/kg x BSA as opposed to the traditional Parkland 4 mg/kg. The ABLS course says that we tend to underestimate the burn BSA percentage but over-resuscitate with fluids. This is why we see that different formula. EMS should recognize the importance of fluids in the patient with severe burns but not try to overdo that volume for the first 8 hours while enroute.

@danlimmer6326 I know the consensus formula is 2 to 4 ml but basically up to us if we use 2,3 or 4 just checking cause we are mostly being tested on parkland in class thx for your reply

It is important to remember that the NREMT won't use a set formula when there are different sources out there. You shouldn't get a question where 2 mg/ml is one choice and 4 mg/ml is another. The questions will be about recognizing the reasons and need for fluid (pathophysiology) assessing the burn patient (determining the BSA% and criticality) and management (administering fluids appropriately based on BSA%, transport time, etc.)@@tommiller5611
