Jesus Christ, as the good cardinal says: the same yesterday, today and tomorrow, for always. These comments by Arinze are concise, very well thought out and expressed and speak for the majority of Catholics, I believe. This is another transparently Holy Man. I was probably as much as anyone I knew in the Ratzinger camp in 2005, and I miss him multiple hours every day. But I have great reverence and love for Arinze, who is the picture of a man who effectively communicates his faith, and he is playing a large role, alone with Cardinal Turkson in the explosion of Catholicism in Africa. Cardinal Arinze I love you and your steadfastness and support for Pope Bendedict XVI. But what strikes me is that when it was mentioned that Holy Father that he was clear headed and firm and could not have rushed the decision, that is what puzzles me. If he was clear and firm why he would not continue? Was there something that we all missed? Catholics must not be caught by surprises anymore, though we will continue our life with pains and suffering.

Arinze is great! I'll never forget when he gave a speech at Georgetown and ripped into them for not having any Catholic identity anymore (i.e. crucifix on wall in classrooms,having pro-abortion faculty members, etc.) and he ruffled their feathers and offended the libs. That's when I knew he should've been our Pope after JP II. Nothing against Ratzinger, but we need a more energetic, younger Pope who is NOT European.
Frankly I don't know why the Cardinals or anybody would have been shocked by Benedict's action in resigning. He has been hinting and even saying for the last few years he would take this action which according to Canon law he has a right to do.
Anyone who is confused about the Pope resigning should watch this! Every word he said made perfect sense and was very comforting. Like he said, the Holy Spirit does not go on holidays and will surely see the church through and at the end of the day it should be about serving Christ. AMEN Cardinal Arinze, AMEN!!!!!

oh so you're saying everything that has to do with God is one on one? that people in heaven don't do anything? You're wrong. Jesus is salvation of course. The Body of Christ is united in Him, that is why heaven transcends time and space and why people are able to ask for intersession from each other. There is no danger but it causes confusion. Christ is our focus true, but the Pope is Christ's representative of Christ on earth. There is no sentiment but concern for the affect it has on the faithful.

Now it is true that every believer of Jesus Christ is a stone in the great building of God, His church. Peter himself tells us that Jesus is the "cornerstone", and we are also stones resting on the foundation of Christ: "Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
Peter was not "rock solid" at this point in time. If we read on in Matthew 16, just a few verses after Jesus spoke of the rock, we find Christ rebuking Peter for trying to hinder His ministry: "But He turned and said to Peter, Get behind Me, Satan! You are an offense to Me, for you are not mindful of the things of God, but the things of men." (Matthew 16:23) Later, it was Peter who denied three times that he even knew Jesus (Matthew 26:69-75).
Paul is clear in 1 Corinthians 3:11 "For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ." We can't look to a mere human being as the foundation of the Christian church! "It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man." (Psalm 118:8). Like David said, "The Lord is my rock" (Psalm 18:2) "And who is a rock, except our God?" (Psalm 18:31).
Very well said indeed. As for the other comments about 75% of you are trying to take small quotes from the bible and interpret them based on what you want it to mean. It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle then for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. I guess none of us are getting to heaven using your method of interpretation because I think most of us are rich.
So here in the sixteenth chapter of the gospel of Matthew, Jesus simply says that Peter’s confession of faith that Jesus of Nazareth is Israel’s Messiah is what Jesus will build his Family (called out ones) on…the rock of himself and those who have true faith in him and confess him for who HE SAYS he is. He also says that the gates of hades will not overpower his called out ones, although it will obviously try. No buildings, clergy, programs or meeting there in those words of Jesus.
We ask her to intercede for us. It is in the bible, read the wedding at Cana and the end of the book of Job. In the wedding at Cana Mary asks Jesus to help the ones hosting the wedding. At first Jesus says that its no concern of his, but then he turns the water into wine. Had Mary not asked for His help, He would not have performed that miracle. She is holier than us. At the end of Job, God spurns the apologies of Job's friends and demands they ask Job to pray and apologize for them.
I have nothing but absolute respect for Cardinal Arinze but he is too old. If he were 15-20 years younger (to handle this Pope-on-the-go rigors that the Pontiff has to endure), he would've been an absolute shoe-in no-doubt-about-it. Jesus also let a girl Mary pour a very expensive pure nard oil over His feet as a gesture of worship. Judas asked Him why the oil wasn't sold instead for 300 silver coins. "Leave her alone," Jesus says,"You will always have the poor among you, but you won't always have me." Golly, Jesus could've saved Mary from pouring that oil on His feet and she could've donated that money to charity. But our Lord did not admonish her that gesture of worship.
And that same men chased money lenders out of temple. Not that that verse applies in speaking against criticizing someone who does an act of charity or goodwill with what they have. Sure. The ancient Jews dressed up the Temple with much finery to show glory to God. God Himself instructed Moses to line the Ark of the Covenant with gold. Yes, in scripture the catholic church is based on Jesus Christ, but the Resignation should not be life shattering. He is simply realizing that he is getting to the point where he can't do it anymore and prefers not to slowly decay in public like John Paul II. While I am not a crazy conspiracy, there are quite a few Catholics in the US. While they don't answer only to the Pope, what he does does have some effect. Granted, it's probably not the same as in Europe, but it's still something to consider. On top of that, I'm an American. And I can speak for most other Americans by saying that we are very nosy. This was written in Greek and means exactly what it says. rock is Petra, meaning "a massive rock" or bedrock. Not Petros which means small pebble. Technically, in the Koran, Jesus is considered a great prophet who was sent by guide to guide the people towards a better doctrine. Belief in him is required if you want to be a Muslim. Yes, they don't put the same emphasis on Jesus as Christians do, but they do revere him as a very, very important figure.

Cardinal Arinze I love you and your steadfastness and support for Pope Bendedict XVI. But what strikes me is that when it was mentioned that Holy Father that he was clear headed and firm and could not have rushed the decision, that is what puzzles me. Arinze is great! I'll never forget when he gave a speech at Georgetown and ripped into them for not having any Catholic identity anymore (i.e. crucifix on wall in classrooms,having pro-abortion faculty members, etc.) and he ruffled their feathers and offended the libs. That's when I knew he should've been our Pope after JP II. Nothing against Ratzinger, but we need a more energetic, younger Pope who is NOT European.

Peter was not "rock solid" at this point in time. Paul is clear in 1 Corinthians 3:11 "For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ." We can't look to a mere human being as the foundation of the Christian church! "It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man." (Psalm 118:8). Like David said, "The Lord is my rock" (Psalm 18:2) "And who is a rock, except our God?" (Psalm 18:31).
Very well said indeed. As for the other comments about 75% of you are trying to take small quotes from the bible and interpret them based on what you want it to mean. It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle then for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. I guess none of us are getting to heaven using your method of interpretation because I think most of us are rich.
So here in the sixteenth chapter of the gospel of Matthew, Jesus simply says that Peter’s confession of faith that Jesus of Nazareth is Israel’s Messiah is what Jesus will build his Family (called out ones) on…the rock of himself and those who have true faith in him and confess him for who HE SAYS he is. He also says that the gates of hades will not overpower his called out ones, although it will obviously try.
No buildings, clergy, programs or meeting there in those words of Jesus.

Golly, Jesus could've saved Mary from pouring that oil on His feet and she could've donated that money to charity. But our Lord did not admonish her that gesture of worship.

While I am not a crazy conspiracy, there are quite a few Catholics in the US. While they don't answer only to the Pope, what he does does have some effect.
