  • This is the story of 3 friends who set out to kayak Florida's longest river, the St Johns River! It took us 26 days to cover the 310 miles which starts at Blue Cypress Lake west of Vero Beach, FL and flows north before eventually emptying into the Atlantic Ocean outside Jacksonville Florida at Huguenot Memorial Park. It was a crazy adventure full of alligators, manatees, fish and we even a saw a satellite launch while camping deep in the swamp. This was the beginning of my multi-month destination trips like the 7k mile road trip I took this summer.

Great video! You hit all the highlights and really gave a feel for the St. Johns River and how it changes from source to sea. Well done!

Other sizeable rivers of interest in Florida are the Withlacoochee, Ochlockonee, Suwannee, and Appalachicola. I'm familiar with the Appalachicola as my dad had a camp south of Bristol, Florida less than 1/2 mile from the river. Back in the 60's, 70's, and 80's we would go there and basically fish for our meals. Channel catfish, bream, and shellcracker were the fish we were after and that river was loaded with them back then. There were good sized sandbars to camp on and finding driftwood for a fire was no problem. I haven't been back there in years so I don't know what the state of fishing is like now. You could probably spend 6 - 8 weeks floating and fishing down those 4 rivers and you'll see a lot of wild country.

That was an insane trip!!! A lot of prep and planning went into that! It’s great to see friends can get along and do those trips that’s what life is about.. In my 20s to early 30s I used to do organized trout fishing camping trips typically 4 days with 10-15 guys deep in the mountains of West Virginia a few times a year. I of course went on my own many times or with a few guys but trying to get that many guys on the same page was a challenge in the beginning!!! Lol when we started we had 15 dozen eggs and nothing for dinner, that’s when I took over!!!
Your gear was very well planned out!!!

Haha...that would have been my menu too! Always appreciate a good camp chef! Yea, it was definitely planning intensive!

I looked up and thought I was watching national geographic. Dude you filmed cows crossing a croc infested river in Florida. That is CRAZY I thought I was gonna watch the gators feast for a minute there. I wouldn't of that I'd seen that here. Amazing. 👍🏽👍🏽 The cows are crazy here in Florida cause I don't know any humans that would do that.

I grew up on and around different parts of the St John's. Jan is def the time to go gators are hiding for warmth most of the time. Insects aren't as bad. But great video highlighting one of the craziest rivers in the country.

Awesome trip. Had a great friend go to Flager in St.Augustine and we had planned, a long time ago, a small camping trip for the weekend. The second, or nanosecond I caught my eye on an alligator...OUT OF THERE/TRIP CANCELLED! I guess it'd be cool to jave a guide, but two novices from NY? No way, Jose! Take care and really fun video to watch.

Thanks man! I've paddled my kayak over several gators and when they explode out from under the kayak it makes the heart nearly stop lol! But they just want to be away from us!
