Farmers had been spraying sodium chlorate, a government recommended weedkiller, onto the ragwort, and some of the spray had ended up on their clothes. Sodium chlorate is a strong oxidizing agent, and reacted with the organic fibres (i.e., the wool and the cotton) of the clothes.
Mythbusters - the childhood show that sparked my interest in STEM. And remember, the difference between science and messing around is writing stuff down!
These old episodes remind me why, as a young high school student, I had the biggest crush on Kari Byron 😍 She had the brains, the style, the wit and that moonbeam smile. The woman had it all for me and considering she's almost 50 now, I think she still does.
Farming fertilizer is well known to be explosive, so combining that with the pesticide it's very feasible that the new pesticide cocktail caused a chemical reaction with an ignition followed by the fertilizer powder causing the boom.
I used to be a professional shotfirer (explosives tech in the mining industry) and there's nothing worse than the feeling when you have a gap in the con line... It's only ever happened to me on a couple of occasions, after thousands of successful blasts. And even though it's unlikely to go off, you have to go and disconnect the faulty line, which considering my entire career was using the "non electric" tied in method (meaning every hole is connected to the point of ignition), it's a spooky feeling to walk back into a loaded and tied in shot AFTER you've already hit the buttons. Especially when you're absolutely sure everything should have fired, because you've checked it several times and gone through the checklists. Like I said, I've only ever done it a couple of times, but I'll never forget the sinking feeling of doing it. Especially because the mine I worked in was one of the biggest gold mines in the world and it was right next to the town, so there was often hundreds of tourists and locals at the lookout watching the blasts scheduled for 1pm and 5pm almost every day.
Yep, if you allow the nitration solution (a mix of nitric and sulfuric acid) to get too hot it can liberate a ton of nitrogen dioxide, which is the reddish-orange gas coming off it. They should have chilled the acid mix in a freezer first, the reaction is exothermic which overheated the solution.
Guys stop posting clips.... Mythbusters have a channel where they upload the whole episode...and they have most of them up already... go do something else

I would add safety precautions for those in STEM. Those who mess around arent always concerned about it
Always just a little bittersweet to see Grant in these... The world misses you dearly, bud.
I've said it before and I will say it for the rest of time.
The world is just a little dimmer without that winning smile of his.
"Frank, why are you standing so far away?"
"I want to continue to live."
"...Okay, next question: *_why am I standing so close?!_*
😂

Casually making ANFO on TV is awesome
Lol
I am laughing so hard every time seeing mythbusters use a skull to smoke a cigarette.
It is the best anti-smoking ad ever!😂
Thee Ultimate Blast on M.B. was when they blew up the cement truck
As kids back in the early 70's, we used to buy Na chlorate in 5 pound jars at the local grocery store. We had all kinds of fun with that stuff.
Farming fertilizer is well known to be explosive, so combining that with the pesticide it's very feasible that the new pesticide cocktail caused a chemical reaction with an ignition followed by the fertilizer powder causing the boom.
maybe a little diesel spilled on their pants while fueling up the tractor added to the mix
This show is why I’m graduating in Engineering next year. RIP GRANT ❤
That was awesome! We need this show to come back.
At the very least, they need to air it again
They don't make TV like this anymore, it would be all polished and soulless.
Didnt they try to make it woth new people and it failed?? Regarless, all the episodes are now up on the MythBusters UA-cam channel
I remember watching this on TV.
ah, young adam savage. I LOVE these episodes!

"Kerry's smoking as fast as a school kid in a wash room".... 🤣
"...basically, he's gonna land in a box, somewhere."

Thanks for the clip, looking forward to seeing it disappear in a week like the episodes on the Mythbusters channel
such a young savage!
Boombob farmpants isn't a happy camper..😂
Why do I think they where using nitro for fertilizers and turned there fabric into nitro cellulose, a.k.a. Gun cotton
always enjoyed this show. I miss Grant though. :(
Am I the only one who feels sorry for Buster?? 😂😅
amazing science
You've heard of Liar Liar Pants on Fire, get ready for
Ammonium nitrate + {redacted} +(-) {redacted} = ANFO
Patents tell you alot
Lol I don't think that gun cotton provided any thrust.
What's the secret ingredient
Yo he said one needs compression for an explosion
yes , its correct
I'm amazed that this video has already been up for a day yet nobody made any lewd jokes about exploding pants.
Alticide? (1940's weed killer)
It could be made from a wicked fart...
It was isreal the whole time
Hilarious they can't afford a fume hood.
Similar with hezbulla pagers....
Rerun!
It would probably be more scientific if you use pants from the correct era 😂🎉
He? Mhe? What's happening?
Jeremy Clarkson.
Gun cotton - right?
All it takes is a juicy fart and a small static spark ! 😝
wait they said a weed killer is flamable who invented that bet they caused alot of arson
interesting that everyone's voices are higher pitched, the playback speed must be slightly faster....
That's just in your head. Or you set the speed higher and didn't realize

Their channel doesn't have any videos over 6 minutes? The myth busters channel I mean
