One of my all time favorite books, and I always appreciate how carefully the movies made stayed true to the book. I also appreciate Thomas Hardy for writing it, how brave he was to write so sympathetically to the plight of the poor and unmarried women in harsh society of the times. It all to me, carries over to modern times, as I felt I understood Tess and her motivations very well. There is much to relate to nowadays, despite the story being written so long ago.

Remember reading Hardy’s biography, and his inspiration for Tess was a girl he regularly met and passed almost daily near Dorchester , a country girl, blonde, young, buxom, and natural girl, who was always polite to him and made time for him, he valued these exchanges very much as at that phase he was going through a difficult time in his personal life.

She wouldn't have been hung and she would have lived happily with Angel if her family wasn't evicted from their home. Women weren't allowed to own property back then. So when her father died her mother and all of her brothers and sisters were thrown out of their home. Alec used this to get Tess back by giving her family a home if she moved in with him.

Its actually a great character to be named after. Although many bad things happen to Tess throughout the story, Tess herself never really does much wrong at all. She reacts to most situations better, in many ways, than most of us would, especially for the time she was living in. I think it is very honourable to be named after someone who always tries to make the best of a life filled with sorrow, manipulation, and heartbreak.
