I had to loosen them from behind (within the fender) so there was a quarter inch gap between the seal and the car. I slipped the ring on (had to use some silicone lube) and then tightened the whole thing from behind again. Really, the ring was a bad fit, but after researching it quite a bit, I see that they all are
the nib on tope doesn't sit at the top. it's offset to the side. don't use it as a guide. use the two tangs on top and the hole at the bottom to line it up.
By chance did you over-tighten the assembly to the fender, squeezing the rubber gasket out & enlarging it? Does the chrome ring fit properly when the whole assembly is off the car?
It's not the gasket, it's the metal bucket that the ring fits over. Either it's too big or the chrome beauty ring is too small. Scarborough Faire suggested I shave the top tabs down, and that didn't fix the fitment issue. If I shave them any further, there will be nothing up top for the ring to hook to. It didn't occur to me to fit the ring off the car - I (stupidly) assumed the thing would fit like it should have and that quality control wouldn't be an issue with them.
I have exactly the same problem with a headlight bucket and ring. The chrome ring is boxed as a Lucas part and the bucket assy which came in a white box has Lucas on it. There is no way that the two will work together on or off the car. The bucket is definitely too big for the ring. Also the piece that the light fits to is made of very thin material and flimsy. Oddly enough the new bucket appears to be the exact same diameter as an old one I have so I can not explain why the ring will not fit over it.
What was the final outcome with the headlight buckets. Did you get some that worked from somewhere else? Thanks
