- What do you do when you run out of greenhouse space? You improvise. Here's a little "how to" tutorial about how we created a new greenhouse space out of a free-to-us carport structure. This is a prefab Costco structure that was gifted to us and allowed us to add on extra growing space to our over flowing propagation greenhouses.
I just bought one of these from a neighbor for 50 bucks, 10.5x20 exactly like this one only mine has turnbuckles in between each pole on the roof, 4 poles I believe, I knew I couldn't be the only one to have this vision😊, thanks for the easy tutorial now it doesn't feel so daunting to tackle 👏
I'm glad it was helpful, best of luck on your build!
@@RainDropFarms Thank you for sharing it was inspiring
Love this, thanks for the tips, doing the same thing hopefully with a re purposed metal frame as well.
Excellent job on repurposing stuff! It looks great! Thanks for the idea!
Thanks for checking it out!
Girlfriend you just saved me a ton of money!!! Great easy to follow instructions. You a real BOSS
Best simplified instruction video I've seen so far to repurpose a carport to greenhouse. I have two and am planning to set them end to end for a veggie greenhouse. Mostly for my benefit but a little interest in selling some. Thanks!
Thank you so much! Two end to end should give you some great growing space....we've definitely gotten more use out of ours as a greenhouse than we ever would have as a carport :)
Great video!! I have the same structure that I will be doing this too.
Exactly what I was looking for, thank you so much! What a great job at an instructional video too :)
looks good !
Nice job! Great improvising, frugal and effective! And now you have an additional title: "Plastic Wrangler!"
+M Miller I like that! I'm always looking to expand my list of titles ;)
Great job. Looking good! Thank you. Subscribed.
Nice job you two! This is going to be an awesome growing area for you! Thanks for the video. :)
+Tracy Good Thanks! Super excited to have more space, for sure!
Instablaster.
Thanks for the sharing, i really like your solution
Great video ! Thx for sharing.
Thanks for checking it out!
Very cool!!
+camanojim Thanks for checking it out!
This was a great idea. I’m currently doing this but with a very sturdy metal canopy frame that I wasn’t using anymore. It’s not that big but it’s all I need for now.
Nothing better than reusing what you got
OMG. I found you. I saw this video awhile ago and lost it. Now I have to sub cause I've decided to convert my carport to a screen room.
Oh, I was subscribed. 😕
Really nice job! Great use of a gifted item. New subscriber here, looking forward to watching more of your videos.
+My Old Kentucky Homestead Thanks for watching :)
I love this! Great work.
UA-cam, why have you never recommended this channel to me?!
+Lolita's Garden Glad you found us, thanks for watching!
Thank you. That was very nice. Had to subscribe.
Thanks, and thanks for the sub!
I just saw one made this way and I asked how he did this and he sent me here. Fantastic. We have winter here so was wondering about if it will do good through it. Plus there was comments on venting, someone mentioned about rolling up,,, what section do you roll up if everything is stapled down ? As you can see, I am a newbie. Thank you
Great job! You could do another layer of plastic and wood for a warmer greenhouse.
Great job, looks nice
Thanks for checking it out!
Nice job, Can't argue with the price, That is a lot of seedlings, You guys are going to be busy when it is time to plant them.
+lifeinthailand So many seedlings...planting and then the harvest. Can not wait!
I was planning on doing this and found this video searching for a way to make it double walled. It gets cold here in winter and into spring. I want some R factor to the thing.
Thank you so much for sharing how's it working out we have a temporary shed that we would like to do the same with
good job
Thanks!
Excellent video these old carports also make really good chicken coops using tarps same types of method using tarps...
I've seen them used for that as well, great for semi-portable coops as well!
Very nice. Thanks for the tutorial. I'm in the south Louisiana and I need one with a shade cloth in the summer. Was thinking of converting a 10'x10'x6' dog pen into a greenhouse. It was nice to be able to see how you covered your building. I was also wondering about ventilation. I think I would need it more here in the summer months.
Thanks for checking it out, it's 97 degrees here today and with both end door flaps open it stay reasonable. We though we would have to roll up the sides but so far we haven't had to
WandaH id love to see your progress i want to do the same thing! I have an old dog kennel just sitting in my yard!
I'll see if I can get some pictures in the day time. I don't post videos on UA-cam. How can I show them to you?
My gmail is aisg577@gmail.com, id love to see pics! I have my plants in my garage with lamps over them its really a sad set up 😣😣😣
Sent :)
I used your process on an old carport I have, but I pulled the plastic on the end walls first then I wrapped the sides and the top. I would have had rain coming in on the end walls had I not. Are you having this problem?
Por Dios si le gusta el fútbol, es la mujer perfecta....
Excelente trabajo...
Excellent work thank you. Sorry forgot to ask, did you get enough ventilation out of the doors on end walls or did you have to roll up sides?
The sides can roll up, but this particular house is in a shadier area and the doors seem to keep it well ventilated
Looks great hopefully I can get mine done before winter. Where did you get the 6mil plastic?
Thanks for watching, we get our plastic from Oregon valley greenhouses
Nice, good idea! How warm does it get in your green house? Will this be one that you will be able to use year round in winter as well?
+twopeasinapod123 On a sunny day it gets toasty in there for sure! Over the winter we will use the structure to grow crated bulbs.
I have been searching for a long time for somebody to have a video on how to do this and I found the perfect one. Thank you for this video. I will follow this to a T. What thickness plastic did you get and where did you purchase it?
The thicker it is the longer it lasts, at least 6mil. Johnny's seeds has a good selection if you don't have a local source
Thank you for the great video! I was just wondering if you encountered any problems with ventilation, moisture build-up etc. since there is no fan?
We haven't so far, it seems to get enough a breeze through it to not have any moisture build up....we'll see this winter if we have to add anything else
Do you have snow where you are and know how this holds up in winter? I have a similar frame we are using but am wondering if it needs some reinforcing for snow load.
Hey there! We don't have a lot of snow, no, but the snow we do get is heavy. We end up having to clear the greenhouses every time it snows.
Great idea but after 6 years you should do a follow up on how long it lasted. I was wondering since I live in a very stormy and windy part of the states in Indiana.
It's still standing and has worked great!
Just saw your video-- nice!Any, updates on this project?
Thanks, It's worked out great, it's been up for a year and as handled wind, rain, sun and snow just fine. It's almost full again with starts for this spring
Great job...wish I wasn’t so lazy and untalented or I’d have one too! How long did it take?
Two days? Not solid time, but about a day to build the structure and frame it and then we pulled plastic the next day
nice one. just wondering how did you
fix the bottom?
Concrete on the corners and doors
Great greenhouse! One suggestion is if you live in a place that gets snow it is good to have it far enough from a building that the snow sliding off the greenhouse and the building don't build up on the side of the greenhouse or it can rip the plastic.
Good point, we don't have but a skiff of snow ever few years, but I could see how that could disastrous if you had sliding snow
I have two converted carports four feet apart. Here in South West BC we hardly get any snow but last month we got a record amount breaking 60 year records. I have about four feet between them but snow piled up over three feet between the cold frames pushing in the plastic. I have side flaps so the plastic would have been easy to replace but my lettuce wouldn't have liked it. I didn't even think about the snow when I set them up. I guess with all this "global warming" we need to be careful. I enjoy your channel. Lots of good tips. :0)
Is there a reputable company that I should use for the green house plastic?
We have purchased plastic from a few places, they all seem to be the same. We use a local source now so we don't have to pay for shipping
What’s used for the door and is this temp controlled?
It has a hinged door on one end and is not temp controlled
How has the structure and plastic held up?
We are still using it and haven't had to replace the plastic. It's pretty well protected where it's at, which is lending to the longevity for sure
Just curious are 1x4’s treated?
no, they aren't
Is the plastic attached to anything along the ground of the greenhouse?
No, the bottom isn't attached. It's in a really protected area and we haven't had any issues, bt if it were more exposed/got more wind we would need to figure something out.
@@RainDropFarms Thanks. Used your method and have a beauty greenhouse
Where did you get the plastic from?
We get ours from Oregon valley greenhouses.
Do you have snow where you are ? :)
We get snow every year, but we don't really get a lot. However, the snow we do get is always really heavy, so we do have to clear the greenhouses when it happens.
🎉 I have a car port I want to turn into a greenhouse
were did you buy the film?
We get our greenhouse plastic from Oregon valley greenhouses
How much did everything cost?
We were gifted the structure and the rest was less than $400
How does this hold up in the wind
It's fairly wind protected but it has been up for 6 years
@@RainDropFarms thank you for your answer
How come I don't get notifications?
I'm glad you found us again, I'm no pro at UA-cam but I think it's somewhere in your setting that allows notification. I wish I had a better answer :/
